ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY

We are looking for an experienced HR Business Partner to support academy leaders and deliver high quality people-focused advice across the Federation.

This is a hands-on role where you will work closely with senior leaders, providing expert advice on employee relations, workforce planning and organisational change. You’ll lead complex casework, coach leaders on effective people management, and support initiatives that improve engagement, wellbeing and performance.

The role involves regular visits to academies, building strong relationships and ensuring consistent, high-quality HR practice. You’ll also contribute to HR projects, policy development and leadership training.

MAIN AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Your responsibilities will include:

• Acting as a trusted HR partner to academy leaders, providing proactive, pragmatic advice on workforce planning, engagement, performance and wellbeing
• Providing expert advice and support to managers on complex employee relations cases, including disciplinaries, grievances, sickness absence, capability management and restructures, ensuring legal compliance and timely resolution
• Coaching and supporting senior leaders to strengthen people management capability and embed best practice, including informal dispute resolution
• Providing expert advice and support to leaders on organisational change, including restructures and TUPE transfers, supporting with managing consultation processes and trade union relationships
• Analysing workforce data and trends to inform HR initiatives such as retention, attendance improvement, and improving the employee experience

About the role

We are looking for a dynamic, creative, innovative team player to join our Young People and Families Service. This role will be based in Wales (Cardiff office) and the South West of England, but will also support service delivery across UK.

As a Young People and Families Worker you will work with colleagues, partners, healthcare professionals, schools, volunteers, and - most importantly - young people and families to co-plan, deliver and evaluate a high quality, holistic support offer, both locally and nationally.

You will help young people living with arthritis to build their confidence, make friends and achieve their personal goals. This will be achieved by providing one-to-one support, creating a community of peer support for young people and families and working with volunteers to co-deliver self-management activities on a variety of topics.

You will also co-design an exciting program of social events, youth voice opportunities, digital content and residential events. You will act as the bridge between young people, their families and professionals - especially in healthcare settings where you will play a unique role working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to meet a range of needs. You will support young people during the pivotal transition from paediatric to adult services, making sure it is a time of empowerment and growth.

About you

If your knowledge, skills and experience include the following then we would love to hear from you:

• Experience of working with the third sector, preferably within the fields of youth/community development work and/or health and social care - with a passion for improving the lives of both children and young people as well as their families.
• Experience of delivering interventions to people living with long term conditions, understanding the importance of self-management.
• Experience of taking a person-centred approach when providing support.
• Experience of using a community development/youth work approach to co-design and deliver a quality service/project that is inclusive, inspiring and makes a difference. Engaging colleagues, funders, supporters and partners to make it happen.

Job Description

The postholder will:

• Expand income generation through studio hires, memberships, events, and trading

• Securing sponsorships, multi-year funding, and philanthropic donations

• Develop contracts and partnerships with schools, local authorities, and corporate entities

• Strengthening impact reporting and financial reporting and management

• Supporting the Founder and Artistic Director to build a resilient business model across our sites in Vauxhall from 2026. 

Role Profile - Essential Experience and Skills 

• 5 years plus demonstrable experience of income generation  and management, delivering on time and within budget 

• Demonstrable experience of budget management - strong financial literacy, commercial awareness and analytical 

• You enjoy working in an entrepreneurial and creative, start-up environment - understanding that this may mean doing what is needed to get the outcome, even if not within one’s own role

• You have resilience to change course and adapt priorities as needed by the business

• You are as comfortable working independently as you are as part of a team

• You enjoy working with a small team and contributing to the broader ambition of the whole organisation and being an ambassador for our work

• Willing to be based in our studio in Vauxhall

About Chapter One

Chapter One is a small but growing charity, working to ensure that every child has 1:1 reading support at the time they need it most.

Our unique Online Reading Volunteer programme currently supports about 3,500 children a year. It pairs disadvantaged, struggling five to eight-year old (KS1) readers with reading support volunteers who come from over 180 local and national businesses. The volunteer task is very focused: readers commit 30 minutes a week to read with a child using a bespoke digital platform for an entire academic year. The results are transformative, boosting children's reading confidence and ability.

We have set ourselves ambitious targets and want to support 3,900 children by 2026/27, so this role, with responsibility for building new corporate partnerships, will be crucial to ensuring that we have sufficient volunteers to achieve this target. 2026 has been designated by the Government as the National Year of Reading, so we have a great opportunity to capitalise on this and secure business commitment for our work!

About the role

Chapter One is seeking a proactive, energetic and enthusiastic Business Development Officer to be an integral part of a team which aims to both maximise corporate income and take Chapter One into new regions across the UK.

Reporting to our Business Development Manager (BDM), but also working closely with our Corporate Partnerships Team, you’ll help them to deliver our annual volunteer targets. This will involve prospect research and engagement, presentations, networking, pipeline management and lead conversion.

This role within Chapter One is an opportunity for an early career professional or someone looking for a career change to hone their business development and sales skills in a dynamic, fast-growing charity which is flexible and agile. 

Key Responsibilities

Corporate Partner Recruitment

• With support from the BDM, proactively ‘sell’ Chapter One programmes to potential new corporate partners to achieve annual new partner/volunteer targets

• Use LinkedIn Sales Navigator and other relevant platforms to identify, research and contact potential new corporate partners

• Prepare and tailor communications for prospective new partners, including research on their CSR/social value strategy and its alignment with Chapter One’s mission and regional presence

• Ensure the prospective new partner pipeline is proactively managed on our Salesforce CRM and work with the BDM to automate the pipeline process where appropriate.

• Identify opportunities for regional expansion and support the BDM to secure commitments in line with launch timetables

• Identify opportunities for expansion in specific sectors or in relation to specific initiatives.

• Post on LinkedIn and develop a network of CSR and Social Value managers and relevant organisations

• Research relevant intermediaries, local authorities and groups with which Chapter One could build ‘broker’ relationships

• Keep up to date with developments in CSR/ESG/Social Value and employer-led volunteering

• Research relevant events and conferences that Chapter One team could attend to network and/or speak

• Ensure Chapter One information on external volunteering and matchmaking platforms is kept up-to-date

Account Management

• Lead the account management of a portfolio of corporate partners (approx. 10–15), delivering against retention, growth, and income targets through regular reviews and proactive relationship building.

• Plan and deliver partnership meetings, volunteer recruitment sessions, and tailored communications aligned to each partner’s CSR strategy and Chapter One’s mission.

• Collaborate with the Corporate Partnerships Team and internal teams to produce high-quality reports, pitches, onboarding experiences, and promotional materials for partners and volunteers.

• Ensure accurate partner administration, including CRM record-keeping (Salesforce), invoicing coordination, and general account management processes.

General

• Oversee, maintain and develop business development processes, including use of Salesforce CRM and exchange of information with the Corporate Partnerships Team

• Conduct administrative duties as required to support the Business Development Manager

• Attend online and in person meetings, conferences and events to represent Chapter One, talk about its work and recruit partners.

We are looking for some of the following attributes, though you might be more experienced in some areas than others:

• Experience of business development of Corporate Partnerships in a charity or B-2-B environment

• An ability to create compelling written pitches, ensuring messaging and brand are consistent

• Awareness of the importance of data security best practice and GDPR regulations when processing a range of stakeholder data

The Investment Director (ID) is a key member of the Investment Team, playing a leading role in identifying, assessing, and supporting portfolio partner charities and other non-profit organisations to deepen their impact and scale their outcomes. This role works closely with other Investment Directors and Investment Managers to deliver external facing support to portfolio partners as well as internal projects to support the development of the investment model and portfolio strategy.

Investment Directors use strategic thinking, analytical rigour, and senior relationship skills to support a portfolio of amazing organisations that, together, will help shift the life chances and outcomes of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds in the UK.

About the Investment Team

The Investment Team is responsible for selecting portfolio partners, managing our charity investments and supporting our portfolio partners to improve and scale their impact.

The Investment Team also leads the Impetus Leadership Academy, a leadership development programme to support talent from ethnic minority backgrounds in the UK youth sector to progress into senior leadership roles.

The team is made up of 18 people, including former teachers, charity chief executives, charity impact leads, management consultants, social investment portfolio managers and impact consultants.  

The team is led by a Portfolio Director who sits on the Senior Management Team. The Portfolio Director has 5 direct reports: a Deputy Portfolio Director, three Sector Leads (who lead our work in School engagement, School attainment and Employment Sectors) and an Impact Lead. Sector Leads line manage 6 Investment Directors. Investment Directors line manage Investment Managers (currently 5). Investment Directors and Investment Managers tend to primarily focus on a sector but might have mixed portfolios, depending on need, experience and interest.

The Investment Team has a good track record of role progression. All four Leads and a number of our Investment Directors were promoted from within the team.

Key responsibilities

Finding high potential charities and non-profit partners for our portfolio

• Identifying potential charitable organisations for investment 
• Leading in-depth due diligence process within the scope of a grant round, to assess and build partnership foundations with potential partners – covering leadership and governance, and their impact, scale, and partnership potential; 
• Modelling from first contact of origination, our approach to engaged and trust-based investment management support;
• Developing and presenting high quality investment propositions to our Investment Committee.

Managing partnerships with portfolio partners

• Managing relationships with partner Chairs and CEOs 
• Agreeing Service Funding Agreements, including appropriate annual investment milestones to allow for a clear assessment of re-investment potential at end of phase 
• Regularly monitoring and assessing partner progress / risks against milestones and making evidence-based recommendations on progression or exit to Leads, Portfolio Director and the Investment Committee
• Escalating key risks on performance, leadership and safeguarding 
• Conducting annual partnership review with Sector Leads and partner CEOs
• Working with Impetus Finance colleagues to ensure timely distribution of grant payments, in line with Service Funding Agreements. 

Supporting portfolio partners 

• Providing direct support to CEOs and senior colleagues on key strategic topics, using a mix of at least monthly one-to-one meetings and group facilitation to:
  • clarify theory of change,
  • define long term ambition,
  • develop growth strategy
  • achieve a step change in the delivery and performance management of outcomes,
  • strengthen leadership (individual and collective) and governance capabilities,
  • develop path to scale,
  • build financial resilience;
• Scoping and project managing pro bono capacity-building projects (in addition to providing direct management support). Ensure projects are delivered to a high standard and contribute to charity progression;
• Identifying engagement opportunities for our donors and supporters with portfolio partners that are aligned with the partner’s activities and do not distract or undermine their core work;
• Collaborating with the Impetus Philanthropy team to support the development of additional funding opportunities for portfolio partners, enhancing their ability to deliver impact at scale;
• Effectively leveraging the support of investment managers to advance the objectives developed for each portfolio partner that is managed by an Investment Director.

Support to Impetus

• Developing expertise about “what works” in the sector through cultivation and use of expert input and engagement as well as investigation into key research and evaluative literature;
• Contributing insights and learning from portfolio work to inform Impetus’ strategy, model and delivery;
• Contributing to internal priorities and working groups (e.g. team strategy discussions, digital improvement initiatives, or equity, diversity, and inclusion)
• Contribute towards Impetus’ public affairs and philanthropy objectives through input into case studies, research and policy campaigns, donor reports and fundraising events
• Sharing the learning from our work across the team, across the organisation and externally working within Impetus strategy and agreed forums
• Engaging in Impetus pro bono, communications, and advocacy events, and engage portfolio partners appropriately in these events.
