The Communications Assistant will be an integral role in the communications directorate, supporting the Director and teams to deliver on ambitious objectives. Duties and responsibilities 

• Financial Management 

• Ensure consistent delivery and quality of finance operations, including transactions processing, which will involve managing a bookkeeping service.

• Prepare and monitor annual budgets, management accounts and project budgets.

• Lead on the financial aspects of fundraising, contract management, and funder reporting. Including managing restricted and unrestricted funding. 

• Oversee the process of preparing statutory accounts, including liaising with accountants and auditors.

• Maintain internal controls and policies to protect assets, prevent fraud, and ensure business continuity. 

• Participate in the Finance & Fundraising Committee and support the Treasurer to plan and deliver meetings.

Project Background

Come and join our award-winning place-based volunteering programme that works with residents living across Hackney and the City of London.

You will be based out in the community - the programme is based at GP practices - to engage, support and enable local residents and patients to deliver local services for themselves, to meet local needs. We support residents to come together, to share their skills and experience for the benefit of each other, to deliver local groups and activities such as a book group, film club, exercise classes or cooking group. Residents from diverse backgrounds and demographics attend these activities together and make new connections, building strong local communities, all working together to make their area a better place to live. Volunteer Centre Hackney is a medium sized charity (currently 30 staff) based in the London borough of Hackney, working to support local residents to realise their skills and passions through volunteering and social action, and to share these for the benefit of others.

Our mission is to build and strengthen communities across Hackney through supporting residents of all ages and backgrounds to volunteer and build projects together.

In 2021, we were awarded the Freedom of the Borough Award by Hackney Council for our efforts to support residents during COVID, which included mobilising over 2000 volunteers to deliver food, prescriptions and essential items, provide emotional support to isolated residents and support the vaccine rollout. 

We work with hundreds of diverse community organisations and deliver various programmes to help residents share their skills and deliver their own social action projects to improve people’s lives. These include a befriending programme, volunteering brokerage matching local people to volunteer roles based on their skills, interests and goals, a specialist mental health programme, peer research and multiple resident engagement programmes at GP surgeries and estates across Hackney.

Post holders need to be enthusiastic and engaging, bringing energy to the role, be self-motivating and confident to work primarily alone, albeit with some support from the team members based at other sites.

Our day centre service is currently open three days per-week offering respite, food and somewhere safe to be for anyone facing street homelessness. It provides advocacy and casework services to those who are vulnerably housed or homeless, supporting them to address their individual crisis and the underlying causes. We also provide a small year round night shelter provision. 

APAP works in close partnership with a number of key agencies locally including drug and alcohol teams, street outreach services, local authority housing teams and the wider VCS. We are a gateway service in the community through which our clients can access a range of support. 

The Community Fundraising and Partnerships Coordinator will be responsible for developing and nurturing relationships within the local community to support APAP’s fundraising efforts, including schools, local businesses, faith and community groups. A key feature of this role will be developing increased year-round community engagement and fundraising, leading into the planning and delivery of at least one annual fundraising campaign. Job Purpose

This role sits within our crisis alternative service, Safe Space, which is a core and out of hours service providing a safe and welcoming space for people who are feeling distressed and experiencing crisis. Our aim of the service is to keep individuals well in the community and prevent readmission into hospital. The service operates 365 days a year from 14:00-22:00pm across all of our boroughs.

Staff within the service will provide person-centred, practical and emotional support, face to face or via telephone or virtual on a one-to-one basis to individuals experiencing mental health crisis or preventing crisis.

The objectives of the service include:

• To improve the mental wellbeing of people experiencing mental health and social crisis in HFEH.
• To proactively work with keeping people well in the community to reduce re-admitters into hospitals by working with WL NHS teams (e.g. discharge, LPS, CATT, MINT and SPA)
• To provide a true alternative to A&E via a non-clinical drop-in service to support clients
• To provide support to clients accessing the service- for instance: signposting, de-escalation and crisis recovery planning.

• To treat service users with respect, dignity and personalised support

The successful candidate will be working with adults in a residential setting delivering assessments, group sessions and one-to-one therapy to those admitted to the service. The post-holder will offer an intensive, abstinent-based programme with high levels of group therapy and a strong emphasis on aftercare support. The role will include facilitating specialist psycho-educational groups, 12 step, relapse prevention therapeutic groups and individual counselling sessions.

• Develop and deliver consistently engaging and interactive sessions, utilising a variety of teaching techniques and materials to enhance learners’ understanding and engagement with the subject/topic.
• Set and mark assignments, tests, and examinations, providing constructive feedback to learners to support their learning and improvement.
• Establish and maintain a positive and inclusive learning environment, actively promoting learner participation, motivation, and confidence in professional development.

Administration

• To identify materials and equipment/resource needs to assist the provision of teaching and learning by students.
• Maintaining up to date course files and submitting accurate data on attendance and achievement within agreed deadlines.
• Preparing groups of learners for accredited assessment (exam or portfolio) & non-accredited assessment (RARPA), marking assessments and taking part in internal moderation and/or consultation meetings with appropriate Trust staff.
• Providing feedback on appropriate documentation for example observation, IQA reports etc.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

Essential

• Proven successful track record of planning and delivering high quality teaching of accredited and non-accredited provision in a relevant subject and at appropriate level(s).
• Experience of teaching adult learners of mixed abilities and an understanding of appropriate teaching strategies in a similar role.
• Experience of devising course outlines and schemes of work.
• Experience of assessing and recording progress, both in accredited and non-accredited learning and supporting learners.
• Knowledge and experience of working with a variety of exam boards.
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written and the ability to work as part of a highly collaborative team.

Desirable

• Understanding of the RARPA (Recognising and Recording Progress and Achievement in non-accredited learning) system.
• Experience of working/teaching refugees and or asylum seekers.
• The ability to speak another language.

Qualifications:

Essential

• Hold a recognised teaching qualification such as CELTA, DELTA or TESOL or
• A full teaching qualification for working in adult learning (DTLLS, PGCE or DET)
• A minimum GCSE English Grade C or equivalent

The role of Finance Manager

​The Finance Manager will oversee the finance operations and lead on the preparation of management accounts, budgets, funding requests and internal and external reporting. The Finance Manager plays a crucial role in helping the Board and leadership team understand their performance and their ability to deliver an ambitious growth plan over the next five years. This job presents a great opportunity for someone experienced with charity management accounting and reporting who has a keen eye for detail and process improvement and a desire to be part of a charity that’s only going to get bigger and more influential!  

Our ideal candidate will:

• Have significant experience with finance operations, management accounts, reporting and budgeting in a charity or NFP organisation
• Have a sound understanding of accounting practices, policies and Charity SORP
• Have experience supporting with the financial aspects of trust, grant and partnership applications
• Want to work hands-on as part of a small, dynamic team
• Have a passion for our cause, and a desire to advance the work that we do as a charity

The Finance Manager is one of just 3 members of the Finance & Operations team including the COO and the Finance & Administration Officer. We’re looking for someone dynamic and driven who likes to work autonomously, solve problems pragmatically and plan and organise their time effectively.

Location

We have offices in London and Huddersfield which are easily accessible by road or public transport. We support hybrid working but attendance in one of the offices [dependent on your location] is required on an average of 1 day per week.
