About the role
The Senior Policy Adviser role is an opportunity to join our dynamic and fast-paced team working on issues at the top of the political agenda.
The King’s Fund is a respected independent voice in the health and care sector with a strong reputation for authoritative analysis and a track-record of informing national policy. As health and care services face challenges on multiple fronts, and with government embarking on an extensive reform agenda, we are looking for a Senior Policy Adviser to lead our work responding to key policy developments. It is an extremely varied role, and an average week could include leading work to form our organisational position on newly announced government reforms, running a horizon scanning exercise to spot emerging issues, or drafting our latest briefing on a priority issue facing health and care services.
The successful applicant will manage The King’s Fund’s responsive policy function, a dedicated team focused on emerging policy issues. The team works with colleagues from across the organisation and, in particular, plays a key role working between our Policy and Communications functions to influence the health and care debate.
The postholder will be responsible for co-ordinating The King’s Fund’s response to key policy developments, producing accessible content on a range of topical issues and supporting our work to help people make sense of the health and care system.
We are seeking candidates with a track record of analysing and articulating complex issues, the skills to effectively communicate work to ensure it has maximum impact to diverse audiences, and the ability to deliver high quality work in a fast-paced environment. In return, we are offering the opportunity to lead our work on some of the biggest policy issues facing the nation, working alongside leading experts in a friendly and supportive charity.
We actively encourage applicants from underrepresented backgrounds, people from Black and ethnic minority backgrounds, those with disabilities and from the LGBT+ community. We want people to bring their unique blend of experiences, backgrounds, perspectives and knowledge as we recognise that diversity makes us stronger.
The King’s Fund is committed to a hybrid working model that meets the organisation’s needs, while giving staff flexibility to choose between office and home working. Currently, most staff are expected to work a minimum of two days per week (pro rata) from our central London office and are free to work more days from the office if they prefer. We are in the process of developing our long-term policy on this so the current balance between office and home working may change, although the expected minimum time in the office will remain within a range of 2–3 days per week (pro rata).

Would you like to shape Macmillan's policy work across one or more of our strategic areas? Do you have the skills and experience to develop and implement policy solutions to tackle some of the biggest challenges for people living with cancer? If so, this could be the role for you.
We want every individual to feel empowered to bring their best to work, and that’s why we offer flexibility in our working locations, working hours and benefits so we can support you in your life and your career, and we welcome a conversation about how these options can best support you.
We offer a range of flexible working patterns, such as compressed hours, e.g. 34.5 hours in 4 days instead of 5, flexibility to work earlier or later around our core working hours of 10am-4pm and more options.
About the role
We’re currently looking for two outstanding Senior Policy Advisers to join Macmillan’s Policy Department. This is an exciting time to join as we begin to implement a set of ambitious strategic priorities for people living with cancer.
Playing an influential role in our work across one or more policy areas, you will be responsible for driving the development of evidence-based policy solutions to help tackle challenges faced by people living with cancer. Macmillan’s purpose is to do whatever it takes for everyone living with cancer.
We have an ambitious strategy to put equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) at the heart of everything we do, including across our advocacy work. We are looking for an individual who shares this passion, and we are especially keen to hear from applications with lived experience of inequalities or exclusion or an understanding of how to effectively embed a focus on EDI in policy work.

- Working with regulators and regulated industries such as essential utilities and financial services to improve protection and support for consumers in vulnerable circumstances and increase financial inclusion
To ensure Macmillan is representative of those we support and who support us, we particularly welcome applications from disabled candidates and candidates from a minority ethnic background, as this is an area where we are currently under-represented in our organisation at this level. We also especially welcome applications from people with lived experience of a cancer diagnosis.
We are open to this being a home-based role or split between home and 1-2 days a week in our London office. Occasional travel may be required for external meetings or events.
