About the role:
At a time of growth and of new opportunities for the Foundation, we want to make faster progress to realise our vision of funding, supporting, researching, and innovating, so all disabled people can make the journeys they choose.
Our Innovation Team, in place since 2020, aims to support the Foundation to reach more disabled people, and explores a wide range of current and future transport modes and technologies and how they could be made accessible. Flagship projects include grant funding the National Centre for Accessible Transport (ncat), setting up a new model of car club in rural areas, and an influencing initiative targeting Government and industry to ensure the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) is inclusive. The Team has also commissioned a wide range of robust research, including on our flagship intervention, the Motability Scheme, and grant funded partners in the disability sector to do the same.
This is a brand new role based in our Innovation Team, working closely with Communications colleagues, to use our existing evidence base and that of our partners to develop robust policy positions. As a politically neutral organisation that does not currently have a policy function, we want our start to policy work to be rooted in structured research, drawing out themes across transport modes and disability types to tell a clear story about what changes would make the biggest difference to disabled people. We want to do so in a transparent way that prioritises sharing what we know and convening key stakeholders to bring them on a journey with us.
You will work with internal staff to proactively identify opportunities to influence emerging from our portfolio of innovation projects. You will lead on Motability Foundation’s responses to high-profile Government consultations, coordinating closely between the Innovation and Communications Teams. Where there is alignment and reputational benefit, you may engage external partners to amplify each other’s positions and share expertise. You will develop and implement a specific research programme geared towards supporting us to develop robust policy positions.
You will lean on the subject matter expertise of the Innovation and Communications Teams, but also develop your own knowledge where necessary.
About you:
Must haves:
- Experience commissioning robust qualitative and quantitative research.
- Experience using internal and external research findings and evidence to develop robust policy positions and respond to high-profile Government consultations.
- Understanding of decision-making processes in central and local government, at civil service and political levels.
- Ability to facilitate sensitive internal conversations to reach a point of consensus on policy positions.
- Ability to engage effectively with stakeholders in Government, industry, and other charities and foundations.
- Exceptional written and oral influencing skills, including the judicious use of data and evidence and the compelling presentation of the case for change.
- Highly IT literate with extensive experience of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and PowerPoint.
Nice to haves:
- Understanding of key disability and transport issues, such as the social model of disability, inclusive micro mobility, the transition to electric vehicles, or user-centered design.
Motability Foundation
At Motability Foundation we fund, support, research and innovate so that all disabled people can make the journeys they choose. We oversee the Motability Foundation Scheme and provide grants to help people use it, providing access to transport to hundreds of thousands of people a year.
We award grants to other charities and organisations who provide different types of transport, or work towards making transport accessible. BACKGROUND
Habitat for Humanity Great Britain (Habitat GB) is part of the international Habitat for Humanity network. We tackle housing poverty around the world by working in partnership with communities and families to achieve their dreams of a safe and decent place to live. You can find out more about our work on our website.
We are embarking on an ambitious new direction at Habitat GB; leveraging our global housing expertise and the learning from our flagship national programme “Empty Spaces to Homes” to work collaboratively with Habitat colleagues across Europe in effecting change at a policy level.
“Empty Spaces to Homes” is a ground-breaking initiative focused on a circular buildings approach that already has a feasible proof of concept from piloting, with strong upscaling potential. The premise is simple; unlocking the potential of long term empty commercial spaces to create affordable housing for vulnerable people. As well as the social benefits of adding to affordable housing stock, the Empty Spaces to Homes approach of retrofitting existing structures – at a much lower carbon cost - offers a greener and more sustainable way to meet the housing gap, in comparison to the environmental impact of the new build construction industry. Breaking down long-standing barriers to resource-efficient renovation is essential if the UK is to play its part in meeting ambitious global decarbonisation targets.
Purpose of The role
The UK Housing Advocacy Manager will play a pivotal role in advancing our mission by leading advocacy efforts, shaping policies, and promoting sustainable housing solutions for affordable housing in Great Britain, particularly through our groundbreaking initiative "Empty Spaces to Homes."
As this is a new role, and is being recruited alongside the Head of Global Affairs and Advocacy, key responsibilities will include the establishment of a new function at Habitat GB. It involves working closely with colleagues across the Habitat GB organisation and contributing to advocacy efforts across the Habitat network at global and regional levels through engagement, strategy and shared learning. Key responsibilities also include developing communication and advocacy strategies targeting professionals and decision makers in social, environmental and housing sectors, as well as undertaking research and writing policy papers.
Main Responsibilities
1) Research and Analysis:
- Commission and conduct in-depth research into current British housing landscapes and related legislation, assessing the effectiveness of mechanisms for converting unused premises into social housing and its environmental impact.
- Identify legal changes necessary to facilitate such activities and advocate for their implementation.
2) Lead Policy Advocacy Efforts:
- Utilise research findings to develop policy positions and identify priority issues, setting policy goals, and mapping out related advocacy activities.
- Embed critical concepts such as embodied carbon and whole life cycle into policy communications to amplify Habitat GB's messaging.
3) Partnerships and Networks:
- Join and represent Habitat GB at existing coalitions or form new coalitions if necessary with stakeholders in the social, environmental, and housing sectors to advocate for climate and equity-related incentives in national and local legislations, policies, and funding mechanisms.
- Build a network of relationships among key stakeholder groups and individual decision-makers to advance Habitat's policy goals.
- Identify strategic events and ensure speaking roles for Habitat GB.
- Represent Empty Spaces to Homes and Habitat for Humanity’s wider UK programmes for awareness raising, advocacy and other priorities at key meetings and events.
4) Direct Lobbying:
- Cultivate strategic relationships with key decision-makers to further Habitat's policy objectives.
5) Collaboration:
- Develop collaborative partnerships internally with Habitat entities across Europe, aligning with the broader strategic objectives of the Empty Spaces to Homes initiative.
- Support communication efforts to underpin advocacy efforts effectively.
6) Monitoring and Evaluation:
- Work with the Impact Team to provide regular updates on advocacy strategy activities and evaluate their effectiveness.
Person Specification
· Proven experience in professional advocacy to influence key policy positions and decisions, preferably in housing or a related field.
· Track record in delivering targeted advocacy strategies and implementing communication strategies to support advocacy efforts.
· Experience in engaging stakeholders and decision-makers through events, networks, and meetings.
· Experience in community mobilisation or engagement.
· Understanding of housing poverty policies and related social welfare issues in Great Britain, with the ability to advise on effective mechanisms for influence.
· Familiarity with Local Authority Governance and opportunities for policy influence at local and regional levels.
Skills and competencies:
· Proficient in clear and effective written and verbal communication to convey complex policy matters to diverse groups.
· Strong relationship-building skills with government representatives, NGOs, and various stakeholders.
· Strategic thinking abilities and collaborative work approach towards organisational objectives and advocacy approaches.
· Ability to collaborate with diverse teams across multiple locations.
· Self-motivated, organized, and capable of working under pressure to meet deadlines and adapt to challenges.
· Enthusiastic, positive, and proactive with a solution-oriented mindset.
· Demonstrated interest in our work and commitment to continuous learning and development.
· Dedication to contributing to the inclusive, people-positive culture at Habitat.
The role and responsibilities will be carried out in a way which reflects:
· Habitat GB’s commitment to safeguarding children in accordance with the Safeguarding
Policy.
· A commitment to Habitat GB’s vision, mission, values and approach.
· A commitment to effective management of risk, by operating within the Charity’s code of conduct, policies, procedures and controls and by carrying out the risk management and assurance responsibilities of the role as set out in relevant Policy and Procedures.
This is not intended to be an exhaustive list. Job descriptions may be subject to change.
Flexibility
Habitat GB is seeking to rapidly expand its activities and impact to fight poverty across the world. This means that the organisation must be adaptable and flexible and have an ambitious, dynamic and flexible team. It is a requirement of the post holder to be flexible in terms of location (within reason), line management, and duties and responsibilities.
This role is not eligible for UK Visa Sponsorship - the successful applicant will need to have a pre-existing Right to Work in the UK in order to be offered an employment contract.
Start your Habitat journey
We want the recruitment process to give you the opportunity to share your skills and experience, and to find out more about Habitat. You are welcome to get in touch and arrange an informal chat with a member of the team before submitting an application. To apply for the role, please send us your CV and a cover letter telling us about yourself, how you meet the person specification, and your motivation for applying – we don’t expect this to be more than two sides of A4.
The deadline for applications is 12 May 2024 (at 11:59 pm).
Interviews will take place online from the week beginning 20 May 2024. Selected candidates will be contacted to agree a suitable time for interview.
Please note that we do not reimburse any expenses incurred during interviews.
We’d prefer to hear directly from applicants – we won’t be working with third party recruiters on this role.
This post profile is not set in stone. It gives insight into the main purpose of the role, and expected responsibilities, but it might be reviewed in the future to meet the changing requirements of Habitat for Humanity GB – any changes will be made in discussion with the post-holder.
Habitat for Humanity requires that all employees take seriously their ethical responsibilities to safeguard our intended beneficiaries, their communities, and all those with whom we work. Managers at all levels have responsibilities to support and develop systems that create and maintain an environment that prevents harassment, sexual exploitation and abuse, safeguards the rights of beneficiaries and community members (especially children), and promotes the implementation of our code of conduct.
At Habitat for Humanity GB, we aim to build, develop and retain a talented workforce that represents a variety of backgrounds, skills and experiences. We welcome and actively encourage applications from anyone who feels they’d be a good fit for our organisation, regardless of race, religion, colour, age, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, neurodiversity or any other protected characteristics.

What’s the job?
We need someone with high quality research and data analysis skills to join us as our Research and Evidence Manager. You will work with us to plan, design and deliver projects with cross-sector stakeholders, as well as developing reports and other ways to share our findings with members and the wider sector. We need someone who has solid research skills, is a natural collaborator, and can collate and present research in different ways to help us achieve the change that’s needed for Londoners.
This role is crucial in ensuring that we deliver on our ambition to drive a learning culture, where shared data, intelligence and insight leads to better decision-making. This role is initially fixed term for one year, and may be subject to renewal. It reflects our growing commitment to ensuring our work is relevant and responsive to the diverse needs of our members and communities. As this is a newly developed post, we are also looking for someone who can work flexibly and bring ideas to help shape the role, so that it has a lasting impact on the way London Funders works.
So, what sort of work will you be doing? We’ve just committed to a really exciting and crucial piece of research taking place over the next year, where we will work with funders and equity partners to map the current state of funding for equity and justice infrastructure. This will initially focus on London, before we take the approach to cover England and Wales. The work will be used to inform discussions with funders on the strategic development of funding approaches in this critical space. You’ll be leading on the research and developing the workplan in a collaborative approach with our partners.
Alongside this project, your work will explore other aspects of the funding landscape in London and gather insights from across our membership. You’ll work on reports to support our range of thematic networks, and generate new evidence to help inform the work of funders and our partners across sectors. We’re looking for someone who thrives working as part of a small team, as well as working independently, who will suggest solutions to challenges and use their initiative. Someone who wants to help build a better London by taking action on what matters to our city and our communities.
So who are we?
We’re at the heart of a great network of over 170 member organisations, focused on funding in London. This includes every local authority in London, City Hall, independent trusts and foundations, businesses, social investment organisations, housing associations and more. Together, our members invest hundreds of millions of pounds every year in civil society through all aspects of London’s life, from arts through to welfare, so that people across our communities can live better lives. We’re the place where funders come together to connect and collaborate, where ideas are generated and acted on, and where people work to ensure that resources are channelled to the right places. You can read more about our ambitions here.
Over the past year we’ve grown in number and have several new programmes of work underway, including an ambitious new collaborative funding programme, Propel. The Research and Evidence Manager comes at a critical time to help us understand and connect the work happening across our membership, and to understand how funders can collectively address the challenges facing Londoners.
What do people say about us?
We’re always listening to people to help shape our work – and we’ve shared a few reflections below so that you can get a better sense of who we are and what we do. You can also see some of their comments and thoughts yourself on our social media (@LondonFunders).
Nasyah joined the team last year as our Membership Manager:
“I really enjoy being part of the London Funders team. I like that we are small but mighty, and that we work hard to connect funders with each other to effect real change.”
Yvonne Field, the Founder of Ubele, worked with us on the London Community Response collaboration, helping to ensure that groups led by Black and Minoritised communities can access funding and is a vital part of our partnership looking to the future of funding in our city:
“It has been refreshing to see a partnership of funders that have really put equity at the heart of their approach, and to see that when we work together we can ensure that communities get the resources they need.”
We also asked our members what they’d say about us:
“London Funders are a small team that achieve big things - thanks for all you do.”
“You are a really lovely team, and have done an incredible amount to strengthen and support funding for vital community led activity in London. It is hugely appreciated and it is always great to interact with you”
“London Funders is doing a fantastic job – we are grateful and full of admiration.”
Who are we looking for?
Our ideal candidate would be someone who has experience of running multiple research projects at once with strong project management skills, and direct experience designing and leading both qualitative and quantitative projects. You’ll also need to be able to work with different stakeholders to both co-design research approaches as well as facilitate their engagement in helping us learn from and make sense of the findings. As such you will need a track record of building relationships in a range of contexts and producing and communicating research outputs in a range of different and accessible formats, including presenting to external audiences.
We're proud of the diversity and vibrancy of our city, and work to champion equity and justice in all that we do. We are actively working to make sure we reflect our community in our staff team, and are particularly welcoming of applications from people from Black and racially minoritised communities, who identify as LGBTQ+, and from people with disabilities, to help strengthen the diversity of thought and experience in our team that we know will make our work even stronger.
What can we offer?
We are a small organisation with big ambitions. And we can’t achieve those without our staff team. That’s why we work hard to create a positive work environment for all employees, where everybody can learn, thrive and deliver their best.
We have just made a permanent change to make our working week to be 32 hours FTE which enables staff to work a four day week alongside other more flexible work patterns. We believe a staff culture which values inclusion, equity and wellbeing helps to creates a stronger, healthier and more productive team. Alongside the four day week we offer flexibility in how you work. This shows our commitment to creating a culture that encourages wellbeing and personal growth, but still gives us the time to get the job done as effectively as possible. You can read more about what’s it like to work for us here.
Whilst we are a small team, we share an office with our friends at Trust for London. There is flexibility about the hours for this role, so it would be available on a part-time or full-time basis (with a minimum of 24 hours per week, or 0.75 FTE). The skills, experience, insights and inspiration you will bring to the role are more important to us, so we'll do what we can to accommodate your preferred working pattern.
The salary is £36,400 per year (or pro rata if you choose part-time) and is a fixed term contract for one year, with the possibility of becoming permanent. From the first day of employment you will be entitled to Health Cover and Life Insurance as part of our staff benefits package. On completion of your probation period you’ll also be able to access our other employee benefits including our Cycle2Work scheme and mobile months together with volunteering days and a generous annual leave allowance. We also offer a generous pension scheme (employer’s contribution of 10% of your salary). You can read more about our benefits here.

Every 6 minutes someone learns that they are losing their sight. Every five hours, a baby is born with sight problems. In these moments, two profound questions emerge:
• Can this be stopped?
• How do I (or my child) live this life?
The merger of Fight for Sight and Vision Foundation on 1st April 2023 will enable us to address both questions. By combining our strengths and expertise we’ll be the only significant national funder with the efficiency, capability, and capacity to increase investment in medical research and social improvement. Together we can mitigate both the prevalence and impact of sight loss.
We have a clear ambition, led by our CEO, Keith Valentine, who has valuable lived experience of sight loss.
