LGBT+ Veterans Community Team Manager (CTM)

Fighting With Pride (FWP) is seeking to employ a LGBT+ Veterans Community Team Manager (CTM), on a full, part time or job share basis, initially for a period of 24 months.  The post is responsible for managing a team of LGBT+ Veterans Community Workers (VCWs) with regional responsibilities, around the UK including Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, which are also vacant posts. The post holder will also have their own regional responsibility for community work and the development of FWPs Pride in Veterans Standard (PiVS) in their region.

This is an exciting new role, which would be well suited to a self-starter with a passion for helping people.  An awareness of the challenges faced by Armed Forces Veterans, and in particular LGBT+ Veterans, would be an advantage.

Background

FWP formed in January 2020 to support LGBT+ Veterans, serving personnel and their families.  FWP is a registered charity in England and Wales (Registered Charity No. 1191863) and is led by its Joint Chief Executives Caroline Paige and Craig Jones, with the support of the charity’s Board. 

An increasing number of Veterans are getting in touch, and we want to build an exceptional team to support them.  We are looking for an outstanding leader who can take our community work to a new level. A wide range of housing, financial, health and welfare needs have been supported, signposted or socially prescribed, and we have established a network group, activity breaks and newsletters to support a high level of emerging needs. Awareness of these resources and opportunities are percolating through the LGBT+ Veterans community and we are connecting far and wide.  Our partners RBL and SSAFA have strongly supported FWP in our early development and helped us manage the wide range of connections that the charity is making.

We are delighted to have the opportunity to put in place a Community Team Manager who will lead a team of 5 Fighting With Pride Veterans Community Workers (VCWs) currently vacant posts, and work with a Pride in Veterans Standard (PiVS) Manager. (PiVS is a national standard that FWP is rolling out in 2022 for organisations that support the Armed Forces Covenant, to help them better understand, welcome and support LGBT+ Veterans.)

Period of Employment

March 2022 - March 2024 (an earlier or later start may be negotiated and the 24 month fixed term contract will commence from the start date and end 24 months later.)

Location

We are looking to recruit the CTM in the UK and they can be based in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland or Wales.  Candidates from all nations and regions are, therefore, strongly encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will work from home and will be supported by an experienced leadership team.

Role Description and Community Team Manager Responsibilities

The CTM is a fundamental role for FWP.  The post holder will establish their role, regionally as a LGBT+ Veterans Community Worker (VCW) and nationally as the manager of five other regional LGBT+ Veterans Community Workers (VCWs).  They will also work closely with the FWP PiVS Manager.

As awareness grows of FWPs policy work and as each form of reparation is announced, more LGBT+ Veterans will step forward and more support will be needed. We expect this role to be a busy, but extremely rewarding one.

The CTM will help FWP build its mutual support and befriending network and connect Veterans to our research programme, which is partnered with Newcastle University. The research programme is considering the impact of the ban upon LGBT+ Veteran’s health, housing, wellbeing, financial circumstances and employment.  The research aims to provide the evidence base to shape existing Veterans services and create new services that can support recovery in this disadvantaged community. 

FWP strongly supports LGBT+ capacity building in other organisations and aims to connect LGBT+ Veterans, through social prescribing and signposting, to organisations where we know LGBT+ Veterans will get a warm welcome. You will play a pivotal role enabling training and education with our partners.  We are here to lend FWP’s lived experience of the ban and help others to develop their services for LGBT+ Veterans, service personnel and their families.

In early 2022, FWP will launch its Pride in Veterans Standard (PiVS) to help advise and support organisations how to develop their services quickly, to become visibly LGBT+ inclusive for Veterans. In the process of achieving the Standard, organisations will be helped to develop their web content, policies, communications and practices.

The CTM will be responsible for supporting Veterans in the UK and will visit a wide range of regional stakeholders in the course of their duties including RBL, SSAFA, Veterans Gateway, NHS Mental Health Trusts, NHSE, Stonewall, H4H, Combat Stress, Veteran’s charities and other regional and national LGBT+ Organisations.

The CTM will lead a team that enables LGBT+ Veterans to access services which can support them through the challenges of the reparations process and support the commencement or continuation of recovery.  You and your team will meet with referred LGBT+ Veterans and families and signpost, connect, or socially prescribe them to health and wellbeing NHS services that can help, or the services of other Veteran’s organisations such as H4H and Combat Stress.  This role will be a catalyst and enabler, helping advance the pace of welcoming back our LGBT+ Veterans to the military family and the protections of the Armed Forces Covenant. The initial term for the post to be established is for 2 years.

The LGBT+ Veterans Community Team Manager will report directly to the FWP Joint CEOs.

Key Responsibilities as a FWP Community Worker.

  • Be a positive member of the FWP team and a role model and ambassador for the charity at all times.
  • Working with FWP veterans, serving personnel and families who have contacted FWP or been referred from within your region, to provide a listening  and signposting service.  You will carry out simple assessments of veterans needs that enables us to connect veterans to appropriate support services best placed to help them.
  • Coordinate PiVS within your regional area of responsibility, by providing specialist advice and delivering “lived experience” awareness sessions to regional charities, associations, community groups and organisations supporting LGBT+ veterans, to enable their service to be person centred, welcoming and affective.
  • Coordinate outreach communications to LGBT+ veterans, including events and regular news updates, develop regional LGBT+ veteran networks and networking opportunities, and highlight national ones. Support the team in creating community building activities across the UK, such as FWPs Tackling Loneliness Programme in Snowdonia.
  • Specifically, provide advice and guidance to LGBT+ veterans on the outcomes of the Veterans Strategy Action Plan and future reparations.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with UK Armed Forces EDI teams.
  • Maintain records of LGBT+ veteran contact, including actions taken and follow up actions, managing and maintaining FPWs community relationship management database, and uptake of the FWP news updates mailing list.
  • Support FWPs research programmes.
  • Develop and maintain relationships in a wide range of organisations that support service leavers.
  • Undertake appropriate additional tasks, as directed through line management that support the aims and objectives of FWP.
  • Maintain and develop FWPs media resources relevant to your region.
  • Contribute to maintaining FWPs safeguarding system, as directed by the Joint CEOs and FWPs Independent Safeguarding Officer.

  • The CTM will be responsible for the delivery of services in their local region and managing a UK-wide team of VCWs.

Other Duties

The duties listed are not exhaustive and may be varied from time to time as required by the changing needs of the charity.  The post holder will be expected to undertake other duties as appropriate and as requested by their manager.

Leadership, communication and effective team working:

Candidates will have previous leadership experience in managing a team and be able to demonstrate the success of their team(s).  You will be able to support, motivate, guide and train your team to fully develop their skill set, ensuring the best possible service for the users of the charity.  Experience of managing performance within a team would also be an advantage.

As an adaptable, self-starter with a passion for helping people, you will understand, and fully embrace, the main aims of the charity and appreciate the circumstances within which we operate can quickly change, presenting new challenges and opportunities.  Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing, will enable you to disseminate these evolving situations to your team in a positive, clear, transparent and supportive manner, to ensure the goals are met at both a regional and a national level.

You will be an effective team member, working successfully within your own team as well as with the PiVS Manager, Joint CEO’s and other posts.  FWP support and help each other every step of the way to meet the challenges as one team.

LGBT+ Community awareness:

The candidate will have an understanding of the challenges faced by the LGBT+ Veteran community or other relevant experience.  The post holder will need to be able to work in a sensitive and supportive way that builds community confidence, networks Veterans together and connects them to organisations that can provide help.  Many of our veterans have faced immense challenge in their lives and there will be times when you and your team are challenged by those we seek to help.  These occasions need to be addressed assuredly, keeping in mind the lived experience of our veterans. 

Ambassador for FWP:

Successful applicants will be an ambassador for the charity, having presence, enthusiasm, dedication and loyalty at a national and regional level.

Relationship building:

The post holder will demonstrate the ability to build successful, meaningful and long-lasting professional relationships at national and regional levels, with LGBT+ veterans, partners, and stakeholders of FWP, and the wider FWP team.  These relationships will build community confidence, network veterans together and connect them to organisations who can provide help. This relationship building combines compassion, empathy, support and sensitivity with pragmatism and a solution focused approach.

Trust and honesty

The candidate must have an innate ability to build trust with the service users, partners and other stakeholders and maintain a confidential and professional approach at all times.

Previous experience of supporting and developing service users:

You will have the skills and experience to support and guide service users and to develop their self-esteem, self-confidence, independence and resilience.

Good interpersonal skills:

Applicants will have the ability to break down barriers when working with veterans, serving personnel and their families. This will be accomplished by an engaging and positive approach.

IT systems experience including Microsoft Office suite, or equivalent.

Full clean driving licence and the use of a car would be an advantage in most regions.
