We are looking for an experienced Finance Director to join our team of nearly 100 staff, ideally before the end of 2025.

This is a full-time, home-based, permanent position. You can be based anywhere in mainland UK or Ireland, with some travel and occasional overnight stays to meeting and conferences mainly in England and Wales.

We offer flexibility around working hours, including the option of a 9 day fortnight - time off in lieu is also available. We offer 25 days holiday pro rata (rising to 28 days) plus statutory public holidays. The role is a grade 7 position with a starting salary circa £75,000 plus benefits including 9% employer pension contribution.

The Finance Director (“FD”) works alongside the Chief Executive and Operations Director to manage the finances and governance of The Rivers Trust, a leading conservation charity with three associated trading subsidiaries operating across the UK and Ireland, with a collective annual income approaching £10m.

Given the prospective retirement of the current postholder at the end of 2025, we are seeking a well-qualified and experienced individual to take on this senior leadership role as soon as possible to enable handover to occur.

The role is very varied and wide-ranging, including presenting financial information to the Trustees and senior management on a quarterly basis, reviewing monthly management accounts, leading on annual budgeting, appraising internal project concepts and contracts, statutory compliance administration and liaising with auditors.

The postholder will lead a team of eight in the Finance department and join a very welcoming team of 95 highly engaged and passionate staff at The Rivers Trust.

Main duties and responsibilities:

Working alongside the CEO, the Finance Director will provide commercial, financial and governance management and leadership for The Rivers Trust ("the Charity") and its associated subsidiaries (“The Companies”). The FD will not only be an exceptional accountant, with executive oversight of the finance function, but will be commercially astute and have the confidence to represent robustly the best interests of The Companies. The FD will also be an experienced manager of people.

Key Accountabilities:

1. Act as a business partner to support and constructively challenge the CEO in the general management of the Charity and the Companies, reporting to the board.
2. Lead all aspects of the finance function (including maintaining and developing the financial control environment; robust financial accounting; cashflow management; incisive management information; clear and concise reporting to Board) to ensure that the Charity and the Companies’ assets are secured, risks are managed, and the Board of Trustees, subsidiary boards and committees can make well-informed decisions.
3. Manage relationships with auditors, funders, IT specialists, banks, investment platforms and other external organisations.
4. Provide support to project bids and the development of other commercial opportunities to ensure that bids/opportunities are optimised for the Charity and the Companies as a whole.
5. Provide input to project and programme delivery from time to time, to ensure that performance is maximised for the Charity and the Companies.
6. Attend Board meetings and Business Audit and Risk Committee meetings to guide the Board and the Senior Management Team on financial, commercial and governance issues.
7. Ensure compliance with the requirements of the Charity Commission and Companies House and, from time to time, provide guidance to members of the Rivers Trust movement on good governance practice.
8. Maintain the finance department operational manual for business continuity.
9. Serve as the Company Secretary for the Charity and Companies.

1. Lead, manage and develop the finance team (who work remotely) and ensure the team understands their respective and collective contribution to achieving the Charity's and the Companies’ objectives.
2. Support the team in their professional development.
3. Ensure the team delivers a high-quality service focused on internal and external customers and funders.

The Role

What the job involves

We’re looking for a Peer Support Senior Officer (Online Community) to join our team and help us provide high-quality support to men and their loved ones navigating prostate cancer.

The Peer Support team plays a vital role in connecting men and their loved ones to others with lived experience of prostate cancer. We do this through our One-to-One Peer Support service which matches anyone affected by prostate cancer to our trained volunteers with a similar experience and more recently our Online Community, a website-based discussion forum that provides a space for men and their loved ones to share their experiences and find support.

As a Peer Support Senior Officer (Online Community), you’ll focus on assisting the Peer Support Manager with the development and integration of our Online Community into our wider support services. Once up and running, you’ll take the lead on the day-to-day management and moderation of the community. You’ll work closely with users to understand what they need from the platform, and you’ll be key in shaping it into a safe, welcoming and supportive space where people affected by prostate cancer can connect.

You’ll also develop policies and guidelines to ensure safe and respectful interactions, recruit and support volunteer moderators, and work with other teams to share helpful news, resources and health information on the forum. You’ll use analytics and user feedback to improve the platform and support its growth, while staying informed about best practice and emerging trends in online communities.

While the strong focus of this role will be the Online Community, you’ll also help deliver our One-to-One Peer Support service, triaging enquiries, matching service users with trained peer volunteers who’ve experienced prostate cancer and help with volunteer onboarding and coordination.

You’ll be comfortable providing information and support to people who may be facing difficult or emotional circumstances, and you’ll understand the importance of creating a safe and inclusive space for users to connect and share.

You’ll bring a good understanding of digital engagement, knowing how to encourage community growth and participation, and you’ll be comfortable using data and insights to guide improvements. You’ll also have experience collecting and monitoring service data to help shape decisions and measure impact.

Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken, are essential. You’ll know how to engage sensitively with people who have lived experience, making sure their voices are reflected in how services are developed and delivered. You’ll also be able to work collaboratively across teams, building relationships with internal colleagues and external partners, and supporting cross-functional projects.

You’ll need to be organised and able to manage a varied workload. A flexible, responsive approach is key, and experience supporting or supervising volunteers would be a plus.

While you don’t need to be a clinical expert, a basic understanding of cancer care in the UK, and an awareness of how inequalities can affect access to health and support services, will help you approach the role with the insight and sensitivity it requires.

The Role

What will I be doing?

As the Community Support Officer (Engagement and Volunteering), you’ll be at the heart of our work to build a vibrant, inclusive physics community. You’ll be the first point of contact for our volunteer-led Groups, Nations, and Branches — helping them to thrive, connect, and deliver meaningful activities that bring physics to life.

Your role will be varied, people-focused, and purpose-driven. You’ll:

• Support and empower volunteer committees with planning, elections, onboarding, and governance
• Design and deliver engaging training and resources to help volunteers feel confident and connected
• Celebrate and recognise contributions through awards, spotlight stories, and appreciation campaigns
• Coordinate inclusive events and forums that foster collaboration and community
• Use data and feedback to evaluate impact, improve experiences, and inform decision-making
• Champion collaboration and best practice across committees, departments, and the wider IOP network

You’ll work closely with passionate physicists, volunteers, and colleagues across departments — from Communications and EDI to Learning and Skills — to ensure every member feels supported, valued, and inspired.

Projects you work on may include:

• Creating a new Volunteering Guide and Welcome Handbook
• Designing and delivering onboarding and training for new committee members
• Organising flagship events like the annual Committee Welcome Day
• Helping shape our first Volunteering Development Plan and inclusive volunteering strategy

You’ll also be part of a wider team of Community Support Officers, each with their own focus area, working together to build a connected, thriving membership community.

Who will I work with?

As a Community Support Officer (Engagement and Volunteering), you’ll be part of a dynamic, collaborative environment where relationships matter. You’ll work closely with:

• The Community Support team and Student & Early Career Support Officer – sharing insights, coordinating efforts, and supporting each other to deliver a seamless member experience.
• The wider Membership department – especially colleagues in Professional Registration, Events & Conferences, and CPD – to ensure volunteer activities align with member development and recognition.
• Cross-functional teams across the IOP – including Science and Innovation, Education and Workforce, EDI, and Public Engagement – to embed inclusive practices and amplify the impact of volunteer-led initiatives.
• Members across our Groups, Nations and Branches (GNBs) – building trusted relationships with committee members, volunteers, and local champions to support their work and celebrate their contributions.
• External partners and sister societies – occasionally collaborating on joint events, campaigns, or volunteer initiatives that extend our reach and deepen our impact.

People’s Palace Projects (PPP) is a research-led arts charity based at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) and a National Portfolio Organisation (NPO) of Arts Council England (ACE). We develop collaborative arts-based projects with artists, activists, academics, policy advocates, and audiences to address social and climate injustices in the UK, Brazil and beyond. Over the past 28 years, PPP has gained national and international recognition for extensive work exploring the power of creative practices and partnering with marginalised communities to drive change. 

The next five years (2025-2030) will focus on expanding research supported by leadership transition, strengthening capacity, and strategic development, while maintaining core values of collaboration, inclusivity, and innovation. At this exciting moment, PPP is seeking a new General Manager (part-time) to deliver and develop the financial, administrative, and HR systems that anchor our energetic programme of arts research activity and support our committed team to flourish.

Job Description 

• Title: General Manager

Key Objectives 

• To lead on the Financial Accounting & Management, Human Resources, and Administration functions of People’s Palace Projects (PPP), working closely with the Directors and A&FO. 

• To support the operations of PPP’s Board of Trustees, including managing the business planning process. 

• To manage statistical monitoring and funder reporting. 

• To contribute to PPP’s overall strategic development as a member of the Governance Group (senior management team).

The Role

Reporting to the Communications & Engagement Director, this is an exciting role focused on supporting and building PLP’s external profile and audience engagement. You’ll be responsible for: building relationships with journalists and securing media coverage, day-to-day content creation and the development of our digital channels. You’ll work closely with colleagues across the organisation, as well as partners and clients, to ensure our communications are timely, inclusive, and impactful.

This is an exciting time to join the team. You would be communicating PLP’s work at a time when many of the issues we work on – from immigration to AI – have never been more salient. You would be joining us after we’ve launched our bold new strategy, which envisages a strategic role for external communications. You would be part of an exciting creative process to refresh our visual identity and narrative.
