Job description

The Head of Estates holds overall responsibility for day to day management of Coram’s Fields unique seven acre park and playgrounds dedicated to children, in the heart of central London, including the management of a number of Grade II listed buildings, home to a wealth of community services for children and families.

Our historic park and buildings are the charity’s most valuable assets – providing joy to hundreds of thousands of children and families each year. Stewarding these assets is therefore a critical part of what we do.

We’re looking for someone who will relish the opportunity and responsibility that comes with looking after such an iconic space. Someone capable of seeing the bigger picture but also being able to balance this with a hands on operational approach when needed and who can get the very best out of a small but agile team.

Main Responsibilities

  • Lead the day-to-day management, maintenance and continuous improvement of Coram's Fields' seven-acre park, playgrounds, facilities and Grade II listed buildings, ensuring high standards of presentation, safety and compliance.

  • Develop and deliver planned preventative maintenance programmes, oversee repairs and maintenance, and implement effective systems for reporting, prioritising and resolving maintenance and health and safety issues.

  • Ensure full legal and regulatory compliance across the estate, including health and safety, fire, electrical, playground, tree and building inspections, risk assessments and statutory testing.

  • Manage and coordinate external contractors, specialist service providers and capital projects, ensuring works are delivered safely, effectively and to a high standard.

  • Lead health and safety planning for events across the site, working collaboratively with colleagues to ensure safe delivery.

  • Contribute as a member of the Senior Management Team to the charity's strategic planning, estate development and organisational objectives.

  • Develop and manage the annual estates budget, monitor expenditure and identify opportunities to improve efficiency and value for money.

  • Lead, motivate and develop the Grounds and Facilities team through effective recruitment, induction, performance management, training and succession planning, fostering a positive, high-performing team culture.

  • Identify and prioritise investment in the estate, supporting the development of capital projects, long-term maintenance plans and funding opportunities to enhance the park, buildings and facilities.

  • Champion environmental sustainability by identifying opportunities to reduce the estate's environmental impact while protecting the heritage value of the listed buildings.

  • Oversee and support park-based volunteer activities, ensuring volunteers are well coordinated, appropriately supported and have a positive experience.

  • Act as one of the charity's Designated Safeguarding Leads, helping to maintain and continually improve safeguarding systems to ensure Coram's Fields remains a safe environment for children and families.

  • Prepare reports and updates for the CEO, Trustees and senior stakeholders as required.

  • Undertake training, supervision and appraisal activities and carry out any other duties appropriate to the role as requested by the CEO.
