We’re looking to appoint a talented Philanthropy Manager to join our ambitious team. You’ll have a proven track record of securing major gifts and line management experience.
We’re delivering some of the most exciting major gift fundraising in the UK. Our philanthropy team has grown significantly over the past few years, and we’re focused on raising over £1.8m in 2024.
In this role, you’ll have three direct line reports and alongside the Head of the team be responsible for the budgeting and planning for various work streams.
Working with the team you’ll be securing significant gifts to help us deliver services to people living with MS. We work hand-in-hand with our Research team to raise funds for our pioneering research programme.
You’ll also have your own portfolio, identifying, engaging and stewarding a mix of cold and warm philanthropists, senior volunteers and prospects. We’re looking for a dynamic and confident major donor fundraiser to maximise income growth from HNWIs.
Managers across Philanthropy and Partnerships work together very closely support the overarching approach to high value fundraising.

About this Role
Together with the Director of Fundraising, the Philanthropy Manager will develop and deliver the Philanthropy Strategy, with the support of the Philanthropy Assistant. This is a significant part of the organisation’s overall Supporter Engagement Strategy which focuses specifically on unrestricted income generation. This role will raise unrestricted income through the development of Amref UK’s Major Gifts programme - the Mbele Movement - by identifying and cultivating new high net worth supporters, and inspiring them to make unrestricted, multi-year major gifts, in line with the Philanthropy Strategy. The post holder will have three direct line reports and will support the Head of Philanthropy and Events with the overall implementation of the Philanthropy team’s objectives. They will have their own portfolio, identifying, engaging and stewarding a mix of cold and warm philanthropists, senior volunteers and prospects. The post holder will manage members of the Philanthropy team to achieve their income targets and provide a fantastic experience for all their major donors.
They are looking for someone with demonstrable experience of experience of personally securing five and six figure major gifts from individuals in a charity environment. They are looking for a candidate with demonstrable experience of managing and developing relationships with existing and potential philanthropists, influential individuals, and senior volunteers to inspire them to support the charity. The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal and networking skills, able to influence/persuade a wide range of stakeholders and facilitate strong relationships with a wide range of people inside and outside the Society, specifically including High Net Worth individuals.

What the Major Gifts Officer will do:
- This role will be mostly focused on growing and maintaining a portfolio of low-level prospects and donors (c. 4- and 5-figure gifts) though targeted approaches and high-quality written applications.

The problem - On average, 160 young people are excluded from school each week. Once excluded, prospects for these young people are bleak, with only 4% achieving good GCSE grades, and 67% entering sustained education, employment or training compared to 96% of their non-excluded peers. Who we serve - We support the hardest to reach young people in the most disadvantaged communities, each of whom are most at risk of experiencing school exclusion or are at risk of being excluded. Our work - We work in a number of different settings both during term time and after school. Our coaches lead small groups of 8-10 young people, using sport as a hook and mentorship as an anchor to develop their soft skills, as well as improve their physical & mental wellbeing. We are looking for someone to carry out maternity cover for our Programme Manager (Midlands & North). About the Role
The role requires a well-structured and highly organised approach, to ensure delivery and reporting is of the highest quality and a creative and proactive approach, to navigate challenges and hold others to account, when needed. Key Responsibilities:
Supporter Identification, Communication and Cultivation
- Identify, research and develop a pipeline of trusts and foundations prospects, ensuring that relationships are well managed and planned for first, second and third requests for funding, as appropriate.

The Philanthropy & Partnerships team
In Autumn 2023, Foundling Museum delivered a successful, ambitious capital campaign to secure the future of the Museum through a variety of supporters, from individuals, major supporters and trusts/foundations.
The Philanthropy team is responsible for the funding revenue needs of the Museum, which for 2024-25 is c£800,000, making up approximately 36% of total income.
The post of Philanthropy and Partnerships Manager will deliver against personal targets toward this goal. Remaining income includes Arts Council England National Portfolio funding, NLHF funding, core earned income (admissions) and trading activities (retail and venue hire).
The Philanthropy and Partnerships team collaborates closely with the Director, Chair of Trustees and Development Consultants and across all departments to understand and translate fundable and core activities into compelling cases for support. Across a year the team raises vital income for exhibitions, learning and participation activities, events, capital projects, an established endowment fund and unrestricted revenue income.
