Job description

Hillside Clubhouse is a dynamic charity in North London supporting people with mental health issues to live lives to the full.  We are passionate about achievement and have a portfolio of services and projects with a focus on social inclusion - especially mainstream employment.

We work to a model of coproduction whereby our service users are known as members and colleagues and we coproduce the daily business functions of the Clubhouse together – known as the Workday Programme.  This helps people develop skills for life and work. You will support members on the programme as well as provide a range of practical and emotional supports that members might need.

The post would appeal to innovative individuals who welcome the opportunity to make a real difference to people’s lives.  Excellent interpersonal and communication skills will be needed.

Clubhouse has a unique philosophy where staff work in partnership with members (service users) in the day to day service delivery of the Clubhouse.  The workday programme outlined below is a major tenet of his work and you will be responsible for co-ordinating aspects of this work together with colleagues.

The Clubhouse aims that its

  • Members will have better chances in life through improved life skills, self care and confidence
  • Members will be more active in their local communities through being involved in mainstream work, social networks, training and volunteering
  • Members will maintain good mental and physical health (as measured by abridged recovery questionnaires)
  • Members reduce social isolation and become more independent

Workday Programme

Due to the holistic nature of the Clubhouse Model all workers need to be embedded in core service delivery and the workday programme to develop rapport and maximise members’ potential and outcomes so you will also participate in all aspects of Clubhouse work including the following.

The Clubhouse has two main work units – Administration and Catering.  This post is based in Administration and the postohlder will:

Take bottom line responsibility for assigned work in the unit (the delivery of which should be in partnership with members),

Develop and initiate suitable activities for the work unit, in conjunction with the members.

Break down work unit functions in manageable tasks appropriate to the capabilities of individual members.

Share responsibility of the work unit functions with the members.

Motivate, lead and encourage member participation at all levels of responsibility, working alongside members to complete tasks.

Assist members in the development of job and social skills, e.g. help people prepare CVs and fill out application forms.

Other tasks

  1. Provide holistic practical and emotional support to members (including support to attend appointments, assisting with benefits, helping with housing, liaison with external professionals including clinical teams and consultants etc).  The postholder does not have to directly provide these supports and should aim to signpost into relevant agencies where possible.  However direct support should be provided if necessary.
  2. Support members in times of crises
  3. Advocate with and on behalf of members to secure entitlements including access to goods and services
  4. Support life skills and rehabilitation based training with colleagues
  5. Signpost and support members into mainstream activity including work, education, leisure, community and social facilities
  6. Act as designated key worker with responsibility for goal planning to a group of members
  7. Provision of one to one support to members
  8. With colleagues organise social programme activities for members including holidays and outings if a Clubhouse social programme operates
  9. Monitor project progress against agreed outcomes and provide necessary reports to the Executive Director and/or funders as required
  10. To operate within and promote Clubhouse equal opportunities framework and international clubhouse standards at all times
  11. Motivate, lead and encourage member participation and enable members to maximise potential for involvement in the Workday Programme

To work occasional out of hours work, on a rota basis if needed, in accordance with the needs of the programme.  Staff should also be prepared to work on public holidays, if required, on a rota basis.

Attend and participate in daily and weekly clubhouse meetings.

Undertake clubhouse training as required.

Motivate members by example and function as a positive role model.

Deal with difficult situations as they arise to ensure members’ safety.

Function as a team member.

Meet with Clubhouse Director of Operations for regular supervision.

Treat all members, regardless of level of disability, as individual human beings, in the spirit of the clubhouse philosophy, and not as patients with a clinical pathology.

  1. Any other tasks as delegated by the line manager.
  1. Always act in the best interests of the Clubhouse.
