Our Board members are unpaid volunteers called trustees. They fill an essential role in ensuring our charity improves the lives of older and vulnerable people around the borough of Lambeth. We hope that this pack lets you know more about the charity, the role of a trustee and how to apply to become one.
We currently have seven Board members with space for up to five more. We want to find people who have a desire to direct services that enable lives to be changed for the better. We want to increase the diversity of the Board bringing different life experiences which match the Lambeth community, broad and diverse as it is. Ideally we want people that bring new skills and experience or enhance those already in place, but this is not essential. It’s not necessary to have previous Board experience.

About the Role
The Bridge Project is a well-established Bradford based charity with over 35 years’ experience delivering services and projects addressing a range of issues such as substance misuse, risk taking behaviours, relationships, housing, physical/mental health, and employment. We work with individuals, families, partners, and communities to improve people’s lives in a sustainable way, empowering people experiencing multiple barriers to achieve positive change.
We currently employ over 120 staff, 40% of whom are ‘experts by experience’ and have joined us through our volunteering programme. We are recognised as being innovative and recovery focused, and our services have been highlighted nationally as examples of best practice in the sector. Our portfolio of services and projects are constantly evolving in response to the changing needs of our service users and our local communities. Currently this includes recovery focussed drug treatment services, housing and resettlement support, access to education, training, and employment (ETE), volunteering programmes, support for people engaged with criminal justice services and befriending/mentoring services for people with significant barriers to recovery and community reengagement.
What will you be doing?
Our Trustees play a pivotal role in governing the Bridge Project. They are responsible for setting our strategic vision and priorities, ensuring our financial sustainability, and providing guidance and oversight to our operations. Our Board is committed to excellence, and we are looking for new individuals to bring fresh knowledge and experience to join us in this important work. We’re committed to creating a Board which is representative of the communities we support, bringing together those with a variety of skills and experiences, to help shape what we do and how we work. We’re particularly keen to hear from candidates from ethnically diverse backgrounds and from woman, however, we would be pleased to hear from you if you feel you can add value to our Board and would like to help us to make a positive contribution. This is a rewarding role and you do not need to have experience of been a Trustee before, as there will be a comprehensive induction.
As a Trustee, you will have the opportunity to bring commitment, energy and enthusiasm to the role with a passion for doing your best. You will work alongside other talented Trustees, engage with our staff and stakeholders, and contribute to our collective mission of empowering people experiencing multiple barriers to achieve positive change.
Our Trustees play a vital role in making sure that the Bridge Project achieves its core purpose. They oversee the overall management and administration of the charity. They also ensure that the charity has a clear strategy and that our work and goals are in line with our vision. Just as importantly, they support and challenge the senior leadership team to enable The Bridge Project to grow and thrive, and through this, achieve our mission.
Time Commitment
We ask that you are able to devote time to attend 4 Trustee Board meetings per year, 4 Sub-Committee meetings per year and 1 Planning meeting. These are a mixture of in-person meetings in Bradford and zoom meetings. Meetings are currently held in the evening. Trustees are also encouraged to visit our premises to meet with the staff team and meet the people we support.

Share Community is seeking a Chair for our Board of Trustees, and up to three further Trustees to fill upcoming vacancies on our Board.
Role: Chair, Share Community
The Chair is a crucial role for Share, working closely with the Chief Executive to provide inspirational leadership, and ensure the charity delivers its mission and vision. Alongside all the other trustees the Chair will provide oversight of the Charity’s governance and strategic direction.

The principal responsibilities of the Chair include:
- Leading the trustee body in ensuring that it fulfils its responsibilities for the governance of Share Community;

- Ensuring that the Board reviews strategic issues, risks and opportunities on a regular basis, and can satisfy itself that systems are in place to take advantage of opportunities and mitigate risks.
Share is seeking a leader with experience at Board level as either a Trustee or Executive Director. Previous experience as a Chair is not a requirement of the role.
Role: Trustee, Share Community
Share’s trustee team has responsibility for overseeing strategy and performance. Share currently has ten trustees, and in light of some current trustees coming to the end of their term, is looking to recruit three more with the enthusiasm, skills and commitment we need to help guide Share through the next phase of its development.
Prospective Trustees must have a commitment to Share’s vision and values, and a passion for making a difference in the lives of disabled people. Share is particularly keen to encourage applications from individuals with specific experience of:
- Fundraising, particularly growing or diversifying income streams;
- Property and estates management;
- Setting up or running a social enterprise.

NNRF is seeking a new Chair to work in partnership with our members and trustee board to lead the organisation into its next phase of development. We are seeking someone with excellent leadership skills and governance experience, who is passionate about the needs of refugees and asylum seekers.
Established in 2000, we are an independent registered charity set up to work with and for refugees and asylum seekers in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. Our Vision is a society where asylum seekers and refugees are welcomed, receive fair and compassionate treatment and the support to rebuild their lives.
NNRF currently employs 50 staff members and has a Trustee Board of 12 who ensure the charity runs according to its constitution and statutory obligations. Board meetings are held in person, bi-monthly. Most trustees also sit on one or more sub-committees reporting to the Board.
Key Duties and Responsibilities of the Chair of NNRF
The Chair along with the other board members has the primary function of holding the management team to account, ensuring they work effectively to promote the charity’s objectives.
To this end you will provide inclusive leadership, ensuring that each trustee fulfils their duties and responsibilities for the effective governance of the charity. The Chair will also support the Director and ensure that the Board functions as a unit and works closely with the entire workforce, including volunteers, to achieve agreed objectives. You will act as an ambassador and the public face of the charity in partnership with the Director.
Six Board meetings are held per year. The Chair is supported by an active Board and is expected to have regular meetings with the vice chair, the treasurer, and the director. The chair may be called upon to represent the Charity at occasional events with key stakeholders. The Chair sits on the finance and human resource committees which meet monthly, and is supported by the treasurer, vice-chair and secretary to the Board.
Process of selection
All trustees are elected by our membership at the annual general meeting in November. The current board will nominate candidates for election following an interview with the Chair and Vice-chair. The nomination would require the prospective Chair to attend board meetings as a co-opted member prior to the AGM.
If elected as a board member, the new Chair will be mentored by the current Chair in the first few six months of the role. The Board will review the Chair’s appointment after six months.

Background Information
Founded in 1991, Respond is a national charity that seeks to transform the lives of people with learning disabilities and autistic people who have experienced trauma. We are committed to bringing about positive change for our clients and their families, enabling them to lead richer and more resilient lives.
Respond's services for children, young people and adults are:

Training, consultancy and reflective practice
Respond supports charities that campaign for equality and inclusion with the aim to prevent abuse and equip individuals and their families to come to terms with their experiences and live more positive lives.
Our specialist training, supervision, reflective practice and consultancy equips agencies and health / social care providers to deliver trauma-informed services. This includes responding to and providing consultancy and training for significant events such as institutional abuse.
Our income base is diverse with trust funds and grants continuing to be a vital part of maintaining core services Respond offers, alongside donations from trusts and foundations. We also continue to have larger ongoing or spot contracts for our work for NHS commissioners and local authorities.
It is a good opportunity to join Respond's Board at this time, following our restructure and as we move towards the last year of our current strategy for 2022-25. Following a challenging period due to changing funding landscape and closure of some services, we will be focused on consolidation and improving impact measurement to secure long-term financial sustainability.
The role of the Board of Trustees
The Trustees (or 'Board members') are trustees of the charity and directors of the limited company. They are responsible for the governance, setting the strategic direction and monitoring the implementation of the strategy. The Board ensures that the charity acts in accordance with relevant laws and regulations.
The Board has responsibility for:

ensuring the charity acts in accordance with its charitable purpose and is providing public benefit and meets its legal obligations;

Who we’re looking for
Following a recent skills audit within the current Board, the Board is seeking trustees with the following skills or experiences;

Finance - This person will have a financial qualification and will enable the Board to ensure the sound financial health of the charity. The person will collaborate with the Finance Director to ensure that the organisation has systems that meet sector best practice and ensures financial accountability. This trustee will be the Treasurer and chair the Finance Committee.

Human Resources (HR) - This person will have experience in working in HR roles, preferably in the voluntary sector. This person will help review and strengthen Respond’s HR policies, set up and lead the people committee and guide the Leadership team in dealing with complex HR issues including change management.

Fundraising, Marketing and Comms – This person will work closely with our Head of Development and Commissioning on our income strategy and communications strategy.

Psychotherapy /working in a trauma informed setting – As an organisation providing psychotherapy and arts therapies for autistic people and people with learning disabilities, we are looking for a trustee with experience of working as a therapist with a systems-psychodynamic approach.
The Board wants to ensure that the charity's 'beneficiaries' are represented in its governance. We encourage applications from people who have lived experience of autism, learning disabilities and/or trauma-informed work (either directly or through family members). How the Board carries out meetings will also be reviewed to accommodate adjustments requested by new trustees with learning disabilities or who are autistic. Person Specification
The following knowledge, experience and skills are essential for the role:

Time requirement - What is involved?
Trustees attend eight Board meetings per year approximately every six-eight weeks currently on a Tuesday evening 5:30pm to 8pm. Meetings are in London, and remote access is available for trustees who live/work outside London.
Each Trustee is expected to be an active member of the Respond community, committing 5 to 10 hours per month to the charity which may also involve being on a sub-committee such as; Finance Committee, Clinical Governance and Safeguarding Committee each of which meets four times per year, typically during normal office hours online or in London.
Trustees are expected to attend an induction session at Respond prior to their first Board meeting. Trustees are expected to attend all Board meetings. Other meetings are away-days over a weekend.
Trustees are invited to the annual general meeting, which takes place typically in November.
Trustees may claim expenses incurred in effectively carrying out their duties, in accordance with Respond’s Trustee Expenses Policy.
Papers are distributed one week in advance of meetings. In addition, Trustees are expected to review documents and communicate with other board members and senior staff between meetings. Every effort will be made to ensure that trustees with learning disabilities or who are neurodiverse have access to documents in formats that they can understand or have the support available for them to fully participate as trustees.
Occasionally, circumstances may require urgent meetings (either face-to-face or virtual) to examine strategic issues or items requiring Board approval
Duration of the role
Board terms are for a five-year term following which the person can be elected to serve another three years.

Home-Start Portsmouth is looking for a new Chairperson to lead our Board of Trustees and contribute to the development and success of the charity.
Home-Start Portsmouth supports families with young children through their most challenging times. Our vision is a world where no parent feels alone in the critical task of raising children.
The charity is part of the Home-Start UK federation of more than 80 Home-Starts.
Through our expert staff team and local community of more than 100 trained volunteers, we offer practical and emotional support to parents and families by spending time in their homes, running parenting programmes and offering stay and play groups, and school-readiness programmes in the community.
In 2022-23, we supported 1,394 families through projects and community groups, and 788 children. Our volunteers delivered almost 17,000 hours of support to families.
It's an exciting time to join the charity as, this year, we are on target to triple income, have doubled the staff team and are offering services to many more families in the city.
The role
We are looking for a strong and passionate Chair to lead and enable the Board of Trustees at Home-Start Portsmouth (made up of eight Trustees and CEO).

Trustees - Field Studies Council
Thank you for your interest in being a charity trustee at Field Studies Council. We champion field studies in and beyond educational curricula. We encourage curiosity for the natural world. We practice and promote sustainability.
The Organisation:
We are an environmental education charity, best known for providing residential and day field trips for those studying biology and geography. But our mission is to create outstanding opportunities for everyone to learn about nature.
We have welcomed over 3.7 million visitors since we opened our first centre in 1946. In 2023 123,000 or so learners visited our centres: most were aged 25 and below and were in school or university groups. We (the Charity and its trading subsidiary) employ 325 or so people and in an accounting context have annual turnover in the range £15m to £20m.

Person Specification:
You may have had limited opportunity to explore nature, and you might be new to outdoor learning. And not every Trustee needs to be an academic, ecologist or environmentalist or have charity trustee, company director or equivalent experience. We are in particular looking for individuals who are able to bring their skills and expertise in the following areas:
• Hospitality and tourism
• The delivery of inner city projects for young people
• Strategic management and development of a property portfolio

About Care for Veterans
Care for Veterans (CfV) was established in 1919 as the Queen Alexandra Hospital Home to care for soldiers returning from World War I with life-changing disabilities. For over 100 years, it has provided long term nursing, rehabilitation, respite and end of life care to Veterans and their families. The 62-bed home has been at Gifford House in Worthing since 1933.
CfV are seeking a Trustee with a finance and/or accountancy background, preferably with an ACCA/ICAEW qualification (or equivalent). The successful candidate will join and in time, chair the Finance Committee.
What will you be doing?
ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES
· Contributing at four board meetings, a strategy offsite and four Finance sub-committee meetings a year. These are usually held during business hours in Worthing.
· Develop a good understanding of CfV’s operations and the environment in which it operates;
· Monitor the performance of CfV in a constructive and inquisitive way;
· Making their time, skills, and experience available to CfV and its executive (in and outside of regular board meetings) and supporting key fundraising events;
· Average time commitment is 12-15 days per year
What are we looking for?
· You will have a background and/or qualification in finance or accountancy (ACCA/ICAEW or equivalent preferred). You will have strong commitment to the improving the lives of veterans and the work of CfV.
· Previous trustee experience is not necessary as new trustees will be given support and training.
· Due to the work of the charity a DBS check and references will be required.

We are looking for 3 trustees, 2 of which who may be interested in transitioning into a Chair role for the following committees.
The People & Governance Subcommittee oversees key areas of HR, including policy, board and staff performance, wellbeing and development. It also oversees key areas of governance such as Safeguarding, Information Governance and Health & Safety.
The Finance & Audit Subcommittee oversees the financial governance of the organisation to ensure financial sustainability and finance practices and procedures are maintained consistently to satisfy statutory and regulatory requirements.
We also ensure that trustees feel supported in their role and offer mentoring support to new trustees during their induction period.

Make a lasting impact on young people in two inner London communities
Our Vision: Through an exceptional Central Foundation education, every student learns, develops, and grows so they can reach their full potential.
Central Foundation Schools of London (CFSL) is a charitable foundation which supports two amazing voluntary aided Schools based in the East End of London – Central Foundation Boys’ School in Islington and the Girls’ School in Tower Hamlets. Between them the two schools support over 2,500 young people from highly diverse communities and backgrounds.
The Foundation has just completed a major building redevelopment project with the Boys' School and is about to start a programme to extend the Sixth Form facilities and provision at the Girls' School. Beyond that the Foundation has just embarked on its first 3-year strategy which aims to leverage our skills, funding and influence to collaborate with our schools to strengthen their education provision and outcomes.
The Foundation are seeking four new Board members to serve for an initial term of four years. We are particularly keen to appoint:
- Two new trustees with experience of leadership the secondary education sector and/or a strong understanding of education policy and the wider education context in which our schools are working.
- A further Board member with a strong background in finance who would also serve as a member of our Finance & Audit or Investment Committee, or possibly both.
- A new trustee with a keen interest in creating opportunities for young people potentially through experience in careers development, corporate partnerships, fundraising or income generation.
The Foundation Board meets in person quarterly and has an annual away day. As well as being members of the Board, trustees are asked to join one of the sub-committees or project groups - these meetings are usually hybrid with one in-person meeting each year.
