About the role

As a Trustee, you’ll help shape the direction of the charity, support good decision-making, and make sure we stay focused on our mission to make cycling accessible for everyone. We’d especially like to hear from people who:

• Have experience in communications, PR, campaigning or public engagement, and can help us share the power of inclusive cycling with more people across the UK

Would you like to use your skills and experience to help us end poverty in later life?

Independent Age is the only national charity focused solely on improving the lives of people facing financial hardship in later life. This year, we answered more than 20,000 calls, emails and webchats via our helpline and identified over £6.5 million in entitlements not being received. We have awarded £3 million in grants, enabling local organisations to reach even more older people living in financial hardship, including our newest fund supporting those living in rural and coastal areas. We also successfully campaigned for the Winter Fuel Payment to be restored to a large number of older people who rely on it, and to improve protections for older renters through the Renters’ Rights Act and the Housing (Scotland) Act.

We are looking to appoint several new Trustees to our Board. We are interested in hearing from people who are concerned about the growing impact of poverty in later life on our society, and can bring us any of the following skills and experience:

• finance

• fundraising

• brand / marketing / engagement

• business development / transformation / innovation / technology.

Every day at Independent Age, we hear from older people who don’t have enough money for a decent standard of living. While they are resourceful, careful and resilient, and employ many tactics to make their low-income work for them, life is hard.

The people who engage with us are part of a group of two million older people living in poverty and a further million living with precarious financial security. Concerningly, our research shows that this number could rise to four million by 2040, without effective policy interventions. This projection must not become a reality.

Certain groups of people aged 65 and over are at greater risk of financial hardship, including one person households, women, people from racially minoritised groups, private renters, carers and people with long-term conditions or disabilities. We particularly encourage applications from people who have backgrounds, characteristics or perspectives that align with any of these priority groups. We’d also like to encourage applications from candidates outside the south-east of England and, in particular, from Scotland.

Previous trustee experience is not necessary because you would be joining a strong, experienced Board and we can provide mentoring and support. The time commitment will be around 1-1.5 days a month on average, focused around the quarterly cycle of board and committee meetings. Trustee roles are not paid. However, we want to help overcome the barriers some people might face to becoming a trustee. We pay reasonable travel, accommodation, subsistence and the cost of care provision for children and dependents when acting on behalf of the charity. Some of these costs can be paid upfront by the charity, if needed. We also pay reasonable costs associated with attending the initial interview.

The opportunity

We are seeking a dynamic Chair of Trustees to lead East London Waterworks Park for three years, with the possibility to remain on the board for two further terms of three years. This is a rare opportunity to join a pioneering environmental charity and to work with the first paid Chief Executive Office to shape this next phase of our development.

East London Waterworks Park is a community-led charity working to reconnect people and nature. Starting from nature-first principles, and with inclusivity at the heart of everything we do, we work with communities to co-design spaces to unlock a chain of positive changes that culminate in the long-term transformation of people and place.

Our work includes:

• co-designing East London Waterworks Park with the East London community, working towards purchasing a 14-acre Thames Water depot in Waltham Forest and transforming it into a biodiverse urban park with free, accessible wild swimming and welcoming community spaces

• co-designing other nature-first spaces on disused or brownfield land in London, returning land to nature in collaboration with local communities to encourage long–term community stewardship

• hosting engagement, education, and empowerment activities that build skills, confidence and deeper connections to nature.

East London Waterworks Park is a sociocratic organisation, with a decentralised organisational structure and a transparent and collaborative approach to decision making. We have grown organically since 2019, responding flexibly to the challenges we have encountered but always committed to our core vision: creating a new kind of urban green and blue space: one that is ecologically rich, inclusive, and shaped by the people and wildlife who use it.

East London Waterworks Park is currently entirely run by volunteers, and volunteers involved in day-to-day operations also sit on the board of trustees. Legal Status

Mavar is currently seeking a seasoned networker to join the Mavar Trustee Board as a Trustee with special responsibilities for strengthening our fundraising practice and broadening the charity’s donor base. Context: Mavar’s Service Users

Some men and women who have grown up in the closed world of the Charedi community hold personal and religious values that are not in line with the rest of the community. Attempts to follow their own path often bring them into direct confrontation with family, friends and neighbours who regard expressions of individualism or self-determination as heresy. These individuals fear that the community will ostracise them, leaving them feeling trapped, isolated and helpless.

Some may simply wish to explore options for obtaining a general education or improving their access to employment opportunities whilst wishing to remain within the ultra-orthodox community; others may look to divest themselves of the strictures of ultra-orthodoxy and to lead a more mainstream lifestyle. They all typically lack the everyday life skills to cope with the challenges of the secular world, which appears to them as a confusing, frightening and alien planet. Any effort to integrate with the outside, secular world is hampered by limited English language skills, cultural disorientation, lack of basic education or qualifications and negligible skills for employment.

At Hestia, we support adults and children who have experienced crisis and trauma, to find safety, hope and purpose.

We specialise in trauma and resilience informed support for people in crisis or who have experienced trauma – including people needing support with their mental health, survivors of modern slavery, adults and children escaping domestic abuse, and people leaving prison. We foster trusting relationships at crucial moments in their recovery, that empower individuals to build a life beyond crisis.

Guided by the reality of our service users’ experience, we bring their voice to the attention of policy makers, partners and communities and use our insight to push for the change that matters.

To help us in our work, we are looking for a Trustee with a strong background in health and social care to join our committed Board and help guide our mission to transform lives.

Strengthening the diversity of our leadership is essential to ensuring that our organisation reflects the communities we serve, benefits from a wider range of perspectives, and makes more inclusive and informed decisions.

What’s Involved?

• Attend 6 Board meetings per year
• Join our Performance Review Committee, meeting 4 times annually
• Represent Hestia at events where possible
• This is a voluntary position, but reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.

We’re delighted to be recruiting for a Finance Trustee to join our vibrant and innovative board of Trustees.  You'll be providing oversight of the financial processes, management and reporting of the charity’s finances in line with best practice and regulations and working closely with our Executive Team and with all of our Trustees.  You will be contributing to the ongoing strategy of the charity, in line with our charitable objectives.

We’re looking for an experienced financial professional to join our Board of Trustees, with a focus on oversight of our financial processes, reporting and management.  All Trustees have responsibility for our financial position, and the person taking on this role will provide advice and guidance to the Board of Trustees and Executive Team on financial management.  You’ll also be a vital part of the Trustee Board sharing ideas and insight on all matters relating to our charity and participating in the development and delivery of our strategy as we seek to ensure that people seeking sanctuary in the UK do not face homelessness.
