Job description

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Portsmouth are recruiting for a Trusts & Grants Officer/Bid Writer

£30,000 per annum plus defined benefits contributory pension

Full time 35 hours per week, flexible working/occasional evening and weekend duties

Home based 1-2 days per week with remaining time at the office in Portsmouth

Reporting to the Director of Communications and Corporate Services.

Accountable to the Chief Operating Officer

Initial 12-month contract (with potential to extend)

About us

The Diocese of Portsmouth comprises 90 parishes across Hampshire, Dorset, Berkshire (except Slough), South Oxfordshire, the Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands. Formed 19th May 1882 by the division of the Diocese of Southwark, the Diocese of Portsmouth has a presence in every community and can offer ministry and mission to all who come to us, working towards the Bishop’s vision of Bringing people closer to Jesus Christ through his church.


  • To play a key role within a small Development / Fundraising team.
  • The post will primarily be to prepare applications to a range of funders, in order to secure support for a variety of projects across the Diocese.
  • Research, prepare and submit well written applications based on information provided by the team and/or Parishes with bids of four, five and six figures to trusts, foundations and statutory bodies.
  • This position will involve building cases for support, working across different teams and occasionally being needed to support in other fundraising activities.

The role is mainly desk-based, daily work will also include researching potential funding opportunities, updating databases with deadlines and tracking and co-ordinating applications.

Specific Tasks

Trusts and Grant-Making Bodies

  • Lead on development and writing of tailored applications, addressing grant-making priorities and/or requirements as specified by individual trusts, foundations, statutory organisations or grant making bodies.
  • Research and identify potential trusts using the Development database, internet searches and printed and online resources.
  • Build on relationships with existing funders to raise awareness of the Diocese of Portsmouth and ensure the team has up-to-date knowledge of upcoming grants and programmes.
  • Identify relevant trusts and foundations that have not previously supported the work the Diocese of Portsmouth.
  • Ensure that relevant funding deadlines are met in good time by checking, updating and managing established Trust and Grants databases with relevant information.

General Fundraising

  • Maintain digital and hardcopy Case files.
  • Collate information into a regular funding update.
  • Ensure grant reports are completed on time, either by supporting the parish or completing them on their behalf.
  • Participate in the day to day work of the organisation – such as reporting, attending meetings as required, and taking a flexible approach to general administrative and support tasks.
  • Take part in staff appraisals and appropriate training for the role.

Communication and Engagement

  • Contribute reports to the communications team to enable routine reporting on developments as well as supporting any reactive communications that may be required.
  • Provide regular newsletter and correspondence for donors in order to develop maintain and strengthen relationships with funders
  • Take a lead role in reporting on progress with projects as required by the donors.

Reporting and Governance

  • Provide routine reports on activity and progress for trustees and any subcommittees that are relevant to fundraising activity.

Person Specification - Trusts & Grants Officer/Bid Writer

Supporting Evidence

In the supporting evidence of your application form, you must demonstrate your experiences by giving specific examples for the criteria within the person specification.

Knowledge, Training and Experience

Degree level or significant relevant experience.

Significant experience in Trusts, Grants or Corporate fundraising.

Proven track record of successful funding applications from Trusts and / or other Grant-making bodies.

Demonstrable ability to work with databases and spreadsheets.

Experience of researching Trust and Grant funding opportunities.

An understanding of the charitable trust sector regionally and nationally, with a detailed understanding of the wider funding environment and changing trends in the voluntary sector.

Knowledge of the values and teaching of the Roman Catholic Church.

Understanding of Data Protection legislation.

Skills and Competencies

Excellent written skills with the ability to produce concise and creative bids.

High standard of computer literacy (Excel, Word, Power Point and Outlook and the Internet).

Meticulous attention to detail.

Process driven with the ability to work within agreed timeframes and track multiple deadlines.

Confidence to communicate with people across all levels.

Ability and willingness to travel for work

Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends as required.
