Do you want to take part in vegan volunteering around your local area?
You can do that – right here at The Vegan Society.
We have an ever-growing Community Network of vegans just like you, who have a passion to volunteer and promote veganism where they live.
Every month, our Network choose from a range of outreach tasks. These could include town centre stalls, writing to a councillor or MP, sharing our campaigns on social media or contacting local businesses. You're in control of how much or how little you do.
As an Advocate, you will have a network of other Advocates and an Organiser in your area. Your Organiser will be your main point of contact. They will send you tasks every month and ask you to feed back on what you've completed and any positive outcomes.
Why do we need you to volunteer?
As the vegan community grows, veganism itself becomes better understood. We're finding that more people are looking to The Vegan Society to find out what being vegan is all about.
Local communities are starting to see the vegan movement as something real and something that’s happening in their area. More people are embracing a vegan lifestyle, which we welcome. From new businesses, to families, to councillors, many people need support. This could be with a range of topics: going vegan, finding correct information around a vegan diet, providing vegan options in their business, MPs listening to vegan constituents, and learning about our work.
Local issues are often unique and more varied than national issues. Our volunteers from local areas are vital! They enable us to share our messages and campaigns in an effective way. Research tells us that people are far more likely to trust information from a peer rather than an outside expert, so community volunteering vastly increases the impact of our campaigns.
Our network of committed local vegans across the country is growing! The Vegan Society organises various outreach activities to influence change in every level of society. There are a range of activities going on all the time, from general educational stalls at events to meeting with local policy influencers.
Advocates are a crucial voice in their own community. They ensure that our campaign messages are spread far and wide. They provide a strong vegan presence in local communities.
What does the Advocate role involve?
Being an Advocate for veganism with The Vegan Society will mean communicating with people in your local community. You'll share the benefits of a vegan lifestyle. You will form part of a local group, headed up by a local Organiser. The Organiser will feed back your collective efforts to staff. You will also be invited to our private Facebook group, for vegan socialising and ideas sharing.
You’ll stay in touch with the Organiser and bring your passion to tasks. Activities can range from staffing a stall to giving a talk at an employee event. It could also mean writing to a local newspaper or lobbying an MP.
Messaging can differ every month. Part of our mission statement is to ensure people can remain vegan, so you might focus on getting more vegan options available in local businesses. Or within our Live Vegan for Less campaign, you may share cheap vegan recipes to help people with the cost of living.
When acting as an Advocate, you will use The Vegan Society’s branding and messaging guidelines. Your local Organiser will guide you in doing this, as they hold physical resources and handbooks. You can report any issues and feedback you have to your Organiser. You can also contact staff if your Organiser isn't available or you have any problems.
What training and support is available?
You will be provided with a big welcome and full induction from your local Organiser. They will introduce you to the group and any actions that are ongoing. Any training and development will be provided via your Organiser, and you can also ask for specific training on any areas that you need some development in.
What skills would be useful in doing this role?
- The ability to stay motivated in order to achieve the best possible outcomes
- Good email etiquette, responding in a timely manner
- Committed to veganism and the mission of The Vegan Society
- Ability to stay calm if confronted with differing opinions or challenges
- A good communicator, with the ability to be persuasive
- Confident in communicating with people from a range of backgrounds
- Experience of campaigning
- Any experience in talking with members of the public through customer/public service would be helpful
- Awareness of current affairs, especially those that relate to veganism
- Regular availability and a willingness to stay committed to actions
- Good team player
How much time do I need to invest?
For Advocates, we ask for people to engage in a minimum of four to six actions per year. An example of an action could be writing to an MP or holding a stall. But the more you can do, the better! On occasion, there may also be online meetings to plan for actions or provide training.

Description: You could make a real difference to the lives of patients and doctors struggling with a rare disease. That's what we do at Mast Cell Action - a charity dedicated to supporting the Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) patient community and improving the evidence base for the disease.
We work hand-in-hand with doctors and patients to develop materials that truly make a difference. And with the help of our medical advisory panel, we're constantly improving our activities to better serve our community.
But we're not done yet. We're looking for someone with a genuine interest in this area, with medical, health, NHS, and research experience to join our team. You'll be responsible for developing and executing our strategy to engage with the medical community, research organisations, NHS policymakers, and our community as a whole.
You'll lead multiple projects, collaborating with doctors to better understand and define our community, as well as initiating and executing new projects. And with your expertise, you'll ensure that all our communications are evidence-based and informative.
So, if you're passionate about making a real difference, come and join us at Mast Cell Action. Together, we can create a brighter future for patients and doctors alike.
You will lead a team of passionate volunteers and interns, working closely with our Operations Director to drive our mission forward. One of your key responsibilities will be to nurture and grow our Medical Advisory Panel, working hand-in-hand with supportive doctors and medical institutions. You'll be the face of the charity, representing us in all our interactions with these key stakeholders.
You’ll report directly to our trustee board, ensuring that all of our activities are aligned with our overall strategy and goals.
We're looking for a dynamic individual who can inspire and motivate their team to achieve great things. If you're passionate about healthcare and have experience working with medical institutions, this is the perfect opportunity for you. So why not join us at Mast Cell Action and help us make a real difference in the lives of patients and doctors?
What impact will they have?
At Mast Cell Action, we know that communicating, engaging, and educating the medical community and policy makers is crucial if we want to improve support for MCAS patients. And that's where you come in.
As our communications expert, you'll play a pivotal role in advancing patient care over time. You'll work closely with doctors, medical institutions, and policy makers to raise awareness of MCAS and advocate for better support for patients.
By effectively communicating the importance of MCAS and engaging with key stakeholders, you'll help improve patient outcomes and quality of life in the long run.
If you're passionate about making a real difference and have experience in healthcare communications, this is the perfect opportunity for you.
About the volunteer

As our ideal candidate, you're an effective communicator who can engage with doctors and produce written and visual materials that really make an impact. You're also a team player who can work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Managing projects and team members is second nature to you, and you're able to keep everyone on track and motivated. And with your awareness of the political and economic landscape in the area of complex diseases, you can navigate through any obstacles that come your way.
If you're passionate about making a real difference in the lives of patients with complex diseases and have the experience we're looking for, we want you on our team at Mast Cell Action.

We’re always looking for empathetic individuals with great listening skills to train as non-religious pastoral support volunteers and join the Non-Religious Pastoral Support Network (NRPSN), working within Chaplaincy and Spiritual Care teams to provide like-minded support for people in difficult times. Research has shown that despite purporting to support everyone, only 4% of chaplaincy team visits are made to non-religious people. However, 69% of the population think specific non-religious care should be available, and non-religious people have the same need to talk about ‘the big questions’ and receive like-minded support.
Our volunteers and paid members work in the NHS, HMPPS, and the armed forces. We have trained more than 300 pastoral carers, and currently have a presence in 9% of prisons and in 30% of NHS Trusts and growing. The covid-19 pandemic has severely affected our volunteer numbers, and we are working hard to ensure that non-religious pastoral care is available to all. Will you join us in making pastoral care more inclusive and equal?
Upcoming training dates:
- London – 16 & 17 March 2024
- Midlands – 25 & 26 May 2024
- London – 27 & 28 July 2024
- Wales – 26 & 27 October 2024
After training, you’ll need to be able to commit at least half a day a week to volunteering, and you’ll need some tenacity along with the confidence and interpersonal skills to work with religious colleagues. You’ll be rewarded by being a positive support to people in their hour of need, and by being part of real change in how institutions support non-religious people.
Please read the attached Application Pack, and then complete and return the Application Form (when you click the link it may automatically download to your device) to register your interest. The application deadline is six weeks before your chosen course, and interviews will be completed shortly after your application is received.

About Dreams Come True
Dreams Come True is a national Children's Charity who exists to create moments of magic for children who have it tough. We are passionate about delivering dreams that have a lasting impact on those who might not even consider having a dream come true. The children we support are living in the highest areas of deprivation in the country, and are living with a disability, a serious illness, or a life-limiting condition. These children need our attention.
Who we support
To ensure we reach the children who deserve our attention the most, we work with children who are living in the highest areas of deprivation in the country, and are living with a disability, serious illness, or life-limiting conditions.
What is a Dream?
Our dreams create moments of magic with lasting impact and are personal to each child we work with. Our team of dream makers, work closely with children and families to deliver a unique experience, that will provide moments of magic and have a lasting impact long after the dream has come true. The types of dreams we offer are:
- Home Makeovers: Bedrooms redesigned by our team of dream makers, inspired by each dream child, or garden play equipment to enhance a child's environment
- Getaways: UK holidays and cherished experience days built to inspire a lifetime of memories
- Small change, Big impact Programme: This programme aims to improve the daily lives of isolated children through access to vital equipment and technology.
Our Makeovers, Experience Days and Small change, Big impact Programme can all be delivered on an individual basis or as part of a Community Dream.
Why is this role important?
Dream stories are an important part of how we open a dialogue with our audience and keep them engaged with the work that we do. We gather feedback and generate Dream Stories to fundraise, engage donors, provide feedback to funders and referrers, and record the dreams we deliver to mark our history as a charity and improve.
The Role
As Family Feedback and Dream Story volunteer you will speak to families over the phone to gather information about:
- The Dream child, who they are, their personality and interests.
- The child’s medical condition and how that impacts them.
- What the dream was, where the idea came from and why it was important to them.
- Highlights from the dream and how it went.
- The impact of the dream since it came true.
As well as any other information you feel is relevant and would make for a compelling story, that the family are happy for us to use.
You will then use this information to create a Dream Story that will be written in line with DCT guidelines and used across the charity. Dreams Come True are required to keep accurate records of the full conversation with the family, so we will also ask the volunteer to provide the notes of the call.
You may be required to talk to the Dream Family and/or Dream Child about how they can support the charity if they so wish to, but we never ask families to make donations. You may need to signpost them to someone else within the charity.
Suitable for:
- Those with experience of creative writing; either through work, education, or volunteering
- Those who are excellent communicators both written and verbal (especially over the phone)
- Those wanting to help fulfil the dreams of children and young people who have it tough, living with serious and life-limiting conditions and disabilities in areas of high deprivation.
- Those wanting to work closely with our dream families
- Those able to organise their own time and keep accurate records.

- Those motivated and excited to work within a small charity

At Action for Children, our vision is that every child and young person in this country has a safe and happy childhood. Dorset Nightstop promotes this by preventing homelessness.
We provide children and young people with a safe, private room for the night in the house of a trained volunteer across BCP and Dorset. Although Dorset Nightstop has been running since 2009, we have just had our busiest year, working with a total of 99 young people and providing 292 safe bed nights. The increase in young people who’ve found themselves homeless is the reason we are looking to recruit new volunteers who can occasionally provide a spare room for young people at a difficult time.
Young people are referred through local agencies and councils, and we run a police check and a thorough risk assessment to ensure they are suitable for the service. Guests stay on a night by night basis, and will receive ongoing support from a Nightstop worker to find long-term, stable accommodation.
A recent young person we helped told us that Dorset Nightstop saved his life, adding “There’s not a chance I would be where I am now without Nightstop’s support.” So by joining us, you could be making a huge difference to a vulnerable young person’s life.
What are we looking for in hosts?
· You're living in either the Dorset or BCP area
· You have a spare, private room that you are able to offer up occasionally at short notice
· You understand the importance of working to Nightstop’s policies and procedures, particularly around Child Protection and Confidentiality
· You're able to set suitable and appropriate boundaries
· You're non-judgmental and understanding of people’s different circumstances
· You're willing to listen
· You have a good sense of humour and an approachable nature
What do hosts do?
· Provide guests with a clean, safe and private room
· Provide guests with an evening meal and breakfast, and a packed lunch if needed
· Liaise with Nightstop staff regarding availability and to provide regular feedback after each placement
· Maintain professional boundaries with Nightstop guests and prioritise their safety and wellbeing
· Participate in training and supervision
What are our benefits?
-
You’ll be a part of a collaborative, like-minded and supportive community who’s passionate about supporting young people and children.
-
You’ll get ongoing feedback and supervision.
-
You’ll also get initial, as well as ongoing, training to make sure you’re supported in your role. This includes extensive safeguarding training, guest speakers from professional agencies, and access to a learning portal. We use volunteer feedback to create our sessions.
-
All expenses are paid. We pay a rate of £17.50 per night to make sure expenses for food, washing the bed, use of washing facilities etc are covered. Any additional costs will also be paid back.
-
There is no minimum requirement of nights that we expect hosts to do. Hosts upload their availability to a portal and will only be contacted if they are available.
-
There is a 24/7 on-call system to make sure hosts are supported consistently. You will also get daily check-in calls while hosting.
-
You’ll have the opportunity to complete first aid training and get an official first aid certificate. The cost is paid for by Dorset Nightstop.
-
You have access to the Action for Children careers portal to apply for paid roles.
-
You have access to a discount and rewards portal which includes hundreds of brands, like National Trust, Costa, Tesco, Marks and Spencer, Airbnb and many more.
-
You’ll be invited to appreciation events to recognise the important work of volunteers, such as our Stephenson Awards

As the vegan community grows, veganism itself becomes better understood. We're finding that more people are looking to The Vegan Society to find out what being vegan is really all about.
Local communities are starting to see the vegan movement as something real and something that’s happening in their area. A greater number of people are embracing a vegan lifestyle, which we welcome. From new businesses, to families, to councillors, many people need support. This could be with a range of topics: going vegan, finding correct information, providing vegan options in their business, MPs listening to vegan constituents, and learning about our work.
Local issues are often unique and more varied than national issues. Our volunteers from local areas are vital! They enable us to share our messages and campaigns in an effective way. Research tells us that people are far more likely to trust information from a peer rather than an outside expert or organisation, so community volunteering vastly increases the impact of our campaigns.
Our network of committed local vegans across the country is growing! The Vegan Society organises various outreach activities to influence change in every level of society. There are a range of activities going on all the time, from general educational stalls at events to meeting with local policy influencers.
What does the Organiser role involve?
Every month, you will be sent a collection of tasks to choose from. We create these from our programme of campaigns. You would be the point of contact for Advocates in your area, sharing these tasks and coordinating activities, such as stalls and lobbying councillors. We will provide you with a campaign toolkit and be in regular contact with you to ensure you have everything you need. You will also be invited to our private Facebook group and WhatsApp chat.
We would expect you to provide any updates from your group and give feedback on each task. It's vital that we measure the impact that we are having, in terms of positive conversations and leaflets handed out. You can also give us ideas you have for future outreach tasks or campaigning. Many Organisers find a huge sense of satisfaction, improvement in self-esteem and enjoy the social side of volunteering in this role.
You will also be responsible for welcoming new Advocates in your area. We will let you know when somebody new applies, and you will help them to get involved with any activities. As the main contact for Advocates, this role does require some awareness of safeguarding and data protection procedures and policy. You'll also be the health and safety contact for your group. There will be full training on your role in this, as well as a handbook and ongoing guidance and support.
As an Organiser, you will ensure any resources or actions undertaken are in line with our branding and messaging guidelines and make sure that Advocates understand this too.
What training and support is available?
There will be a full induction to the role, with a gradual introduction of new tasks and responsibilities. To start with, we will provide an initial training session to cover the basics of community organising, communication skills and event planning. This will be done remotely from wherever you are. Along with this, we will provide a full pack of resources that covers a range of work that we do.
From there, there will be regular conversations and reviews, where we can discuss other training requirements. Staff are always available to Organisers for any questions, via phone or email.
What skills would be useful in doing this role?
- Great organisational skills
- Experience of coordinating people
- Experience of working to specific dates and deadlines
- Good time keeping
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to motivate people around the topic of veganism
- Ability to stick to branding
- Ability to read emails in a timely manner and translate tasks into actions quickly
- Ability to report back on activities
- Excellent knowledge of vegan issues
It would be beneficial for this role to have access to a vehicle, as some actions will involve taking resources to events or visiting MPs’ offices. However, this is not mandatory as the campaign toolkit can be carried in a backpack.
How much time do I need to invest?
This role requires more time than the Advocate role. You should be able to commit around two days a month to carry out actions, and this is usually spread out across the month. We also expect timely responses to emails. When a new Advocate applies to work with you, we would like them to be contacted within seven days.
Who can I contact to find out more?
Enquiries are welcome! Please contact Katy Malkin (Volunteering Coordinator).

We are looking for volunteers to provide short-term telephone support to people experiencing bereavement. Our Local Marie Curie Bereavement Support Services in the South West, support people in dealing with a bereavement, who may want ongoing support, from the same person, over the phone for up to six sessions.
Although you will be supporting bereaved people mainly in the Southwest of England you can be based anywhere in the United Kingdom to do this volunteering role.
The right candidates will be given full training and support in order to fulfil this vital role. When someone accesses this service, they are matched with a specially trained volunteer, who will give that regular bereavement support. You will provide a safe space where they can talk openly about the things that are worrying them, thoughts and feelings.
To be considered for this volunteer opportunity, you must be an outgoing individual who would enjoy being a passionate advocate for Marie Curie and our bereavement support services and the impact that our services have. You will also need to be available for a minimum of 3 hours per week to fulfil this role.
What we are looking for:
- Provide short term confidential emotional support to clients over the phone
- Actively listen to clients and explore their feelings around their loss with empathy
- Pass on appropriate information to the Bereavement team
- Keep to local record keeping procedures
- Ability to signpost to relevant charities or agencies.
- Proficient in using Email and Microsoft Word
What’s in it for you:
- Flexible volunteering
- Opportunity to be involved with a national leader in end of life care
- Full training provided and opportunities to move throughout the volunteer services
- A supportive and empowering team environment
- Clinical Supervision and support sessions on a 1:1 basis or with other volunteers
- Access to other volunteering opportunities
- Continuous personal development
