FareShare Greater Manchester is looking for safe, confident drivers to join our busy, friendly delivery team. 

We re-distribute tonnes of surplus food a month to charities and community initiatives across Greater Manchester. This is an achievement of which we’re proud, and want to expand and is why we need your driving and delivery skills to support our growing operation, especially in these current times of increased need.

Key responsibilities

Driving a van to deliver surplus food orders to the premises of the various Community Food Members we support. 
Loading and unloading the vehicle and carrying out a range of tasks, from basic vehicle checks to delivery administration.

As a Delivery Driver at FareShare, you will be driving a temperature-controlled 3.5 tonnes Mercedes Sprinter van; working closely with a Driver’s Assistant to re-distribute food orders to the premises of a wide variety of Community Food Members. You will be involved with loading the vehicle and carrying out a range of tasks, from basic vehicle checks to delivery administration.

The required skills and attributes are as follows. You should:

Be aged 25 or over, with a clean driver's licence (or a maximum of 3 points).
(Experience of driving a van is desirable though not essential).

Have an interest in the work of FareShare Greater Manchester and our values.

Be physically fit to take on moving and handling of food orders.

Possess the ability to follow procedures and instructions.

Have good verbal communication skills.

Have a high respect for Health & Safety standards and procedures.

Be reliable and be able to commit to pre-agreed volunteer shifts.

What is required?

Volunteering at our community allotment will involve getting stuck in with some gardening, an average session might involve: assisting with preparing seedlings, looking after the plot (pruning, tidying, and watering), and safe light maintenance. We also host planning meetings which you will be encouraged to get involved in to help shape the direction of the allotment.

Community Driver 

Community Driver Volunteers support the Actively Involved Team by driving people aged 55 and over or people under 55 with complex health needs, to various local locations.

Tasks: Community Driver Volunteers will drive our clients to nearby locations in West or North Kent using their own car. You could help with anything from shopping and social activities for clients with limited mobility. You are invited to join in on the social activities, although this is optional. Being able to get from A to B can be challenging for some of our clients who have health conditions or restricted mobility. As a Community Driver Volunteer, you will help support our mission to help clients live independently, and improve health and wellbeing. This role is really for those who enjoy driving, and are friendly, welcoming and supportive. 

Date and time: This is flexible, we share a schedule of trips and you can select the ones you would like to do. 

Place: Various – based around West and North Kent. 

Transport: Own transport is essential. We will cover all travel expenses in your volunteering role. 

Skills required: 

• Good knowledge of roads/areas of West or North Kent. 
• Good & confident driver with a valid drivers license
• Reliable, friendly and patient. 
• Able to physically support clients if needed

Sense Holidays gives children, young people, adults with complex disabilities and their families the opportunity to have fun, meet new people and try new activities. Sense Holidays take place across the UK at a range of venues and vary. Each year we need skilled volunteers to help us deliver this exciting programme. 

We have a few spaces for volunteer drivers on our Beamsley Holiday in Skipton, from the 6th to the 11th August 2024.

The Volunteer Role involves:

• Staying in touch with Sense and your Holiday Leader before and during the Sense Holiday, raising any issues or concerns that may need addressing by the wider team.
• Attending the equivalent of one full day mandatory training which will be delivered virtually. You will also be asked to complete online e-Learning prior to the holiday.
• You will provide hands on support for the people on the holiday to meet their everyday needs. This may involve but is not limited to; supporting them to participate in group activities, making activities accessible to their particular needs, supporting the building of friendships and social communication.
• You may also be required to support holidaymakers with personal care including support with eating and drinking, washing, bathing and toileting. 
• Carry out tasks of daily living, such as cleaning the venue and cooking to maintain a clean and safe living environment.
• For those qualified and willing, you may be asked to complete Driving for Sense and drive an accessible vehicle on the holiday this could be a car, van or minibus depending on the holiday.

Volunteer Role Criteria

Essential criteria: 

• A full driving license and willingness to drive a minibus on a holiday.
• Aged 21 or over.
• Have experience supporting those with additional needs. Please note, we can offer a small number of places to those who are less experienced.
• A skilled communicator.
• Have a positive, can-do attitude.
• Can demonstrate reliability.
• Can demonstrate resilience.

Desirable: 

• Able to use British Sign Language.
• Experience in moving and handling.
• Experience cooking for large groups.

FareShare Greater Manchester is looking for volunteer Driver's Assistants to join our busy friendly delivery team with redistributing tonnes of surplus food a month to charities and community initiatives across Greater Manchester.

FareShare is a national charity fighting food poverty and global warming by tackling food surplus. We source overstocked food from retailers and manufacturers and engage many volunteers to help re-distribute it to over 220 frontline charities and community groups across Greater Manchester.
