Zebra is seeking a qualified accountant to join our board of trustees as our next Treasurer.

Zebra is a not-for-profit social enterprise (exempt charity) providing accommotation to postgraduate international students living in London. We believe in the importance of international studies and have been going for over 60 years. We are a healthy organisation with a strong reputation and ambitious plans for the future.

This is an important time for Zebra. We are currently going through the process of deregistering with the Regulator of Social Housing and are changing our accounting practices and systems as we make the transition away from the housing association sector and to a more appropriate structure to prepare us for growth in the future. We have an experienced Finance Manager on our staff team who you will be working with along with the CEO and the rest of the board members.

We ideally need a Treasurer with some understanding of the charity or social enterprise sector. This is an unpaid volunteer role - there are four boars meetings per year (all online), Audit and Risk Committee meeetings (also online), and occasional meet ups in London - but you can be based anywhere to carry out this role.

Duties

• Acting as a mentor to the Finance Manager, supporting her through this period of transition while Zebra puts in place a new structure and new financial systems

• Chairing the Audit and Risk Committee - number of meetings per year to be decided as this is currently under review

• Meeting with our external auditors on Zoom

• Reviewing our quarterly accounts, annual accounts and reports and providing feedback

• Using your expertise to provide advice and support to other board members, including our Co-Chairs, to support them in understanding our finances and helping them to be able to provide good scrutiny and governance

• Attendance of four board meetings per year on Zoom, where you will provide input and opinions especially around financial matters

• Attending one Board Strategy day per year in London for which expenses can be paid (and ideally also attending our Christmas meal)

• The Treasurer should expect to serve for a minimum of 12 months

We are seeking an experienced and ambitious trustee with the fundraising insight and strategic vision to help Connect: North Korea continue our growth from a small community start-up into a high-impact, sustainable international organisation. As we scale our programmes and deepen our impact, we’re looking for a trustee with a strong understanding of fundraising strategy, who can help shape our approach, promote our mission through their networks, and help us drive change for North Korean escapees.

JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION: Fundraising Trustee

LOCATION: Remote / 78 Coombe Road, New Malden, KT3 4QS

We usually hold board meetings online, but this is open to change.

COMMITMENT: 2 – 3 hours per month. We hold one annual away day we’d expect the board to attend.

Our Board meets every quarter for 2 hours. There is expected support between meetings. Our terms are capped at 3 years with potential for renewal for one additional term.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Contribute to good governance and strategic decision-making, ensuring the Board fulfils its responsibilities in line with our constitution, governance framework, and applicable legislation.

• Provide strategic leadership on fundraising and income generation, helping to shape Connect: North Korea’s strategy and approach to sustainable growth.

• Use your networks and influence to promote the charity’s mission, opening doors to potential donors, partners, and advocates.

• Act as an ambassador and spokesperson for Connect: North Korea in relevant sectors and philanthropic circles.

• Contribute to Board discussions on financial planning and sustainability, ensuring that fundraising targets and strategic objectives are aligned.

• Champion a culture of philanthropy and external engagement across the organisation.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS
 

• Minimum of 5 years of experience in a senior strategic fundraising role in a professional setting.

We are seeking people from a variety of backgrounds to join our Policy Approval Panel. The purpose of the panel is to support the Workforce Professional Development Boards (WPDBs) by applying the appropriate scrutiny to the development and review of workforce policies developed by the sport and physical sector supported by CIMSPA.

The Policy Approval Panel will check whether the due process has been followed in the development and review of sector workforce policies such as professional standards, standards for deployment and apprenticeship standards. It will also check the accuracy of said policies, ensuring that anything issued to the WPDBs for approval is accurate and fit for purpose.

It is anticipated that the panel will meet three times per year ahead of the WPDB meetings but if there are no policies for approval of the board, the meeting will not be held.

An initial induction/standardisation meeting will be held in person, thereafter meetings will be held remotely with papers issued for review ahead of the meeting.

We are seeking a new Chair for the Scottish Workforce Professional Development Board (WPDB). The group has been working for five years to deliver their skills plan for Scotland, and is well established with 12 members from a variety of different stakeholders in Scotland, including employers, education providers and government agencies.

The UK WPDB is the lead on workforce policy, with a vision of growing the attractiveness of working in the sport and physical activity sector and of ensuring that all customers and consumers have a safe and excellent experience.  The Scottish WPDB was established to ensure the successful delivery of UK-wide workforce policy and strategy within Scotland, reflecting the significant differences between each of the home nations in areas such as legal systems, education policy, funding, delivery infrastructure and career pathways.   It has the flexibility to operate in line with the Scottish policies and priorities.

We are looking for an individual who understands the sector’s workforce requirements within Scotland and has an ambitious view for what the future could look like.  You will have a proven ability to drive strategic discussions around workforce policy, and to provide effective leadership to the rest of the Board.

Our purpose is to provide funding to relieve the burden of financial, physical and emotional hardship in our local community of Hampton, Teddington, Twickenham and Whitton.

The perception of Richmond Upon Thames as a wealthy borough masks high levels of need and disadvantage. That means that support for those in need locally rarely comes from outside the borough which in turn means the work of local funders and voluntary sector organisations, like Hampton Fund, is critical.  Our endowment of £60m+ enables us to make grants to both individuals and community organisations of £2m-£2.5m pa.

We wish to appoint a new trustee who will have the enthusiasm, time and commitment to contribute to the work of the charity as it delivers an ambitious new three-year strategy.  You will be involved in making decisions on a wide range of issues, influencing the development of our work and bringing about change. We are specifically seeking a trustee with professional experience in any aspect of social care for vulnerable groups relevant to our grant making. This could, for example, be in the areas of cost-of-living support, health, social work or children’s services.

It is hoped that the candidate will have a connection to our area of benefit through either their daily life or work.

It is not necessary to have previous board committee experience as training will be provided. We encourage applications from people with a range of life experiences, ages and backgrounds.

What are we looking for?

Professional experience and expertise in a relevant aspect of social care to that of our grant making. 

We are looking for someone with a good current knowledge of social care infrastructure and systems across either the statutory or voluntary sector, or both. This could, for example, be in the areas of cost-of-living support, health, social work or children’s services.

It is expected that Trustees will either live, work or have another connection to our area of benefit. It is not necessary to have previous board committee experience as training will be provided.

• An understanding of the voluntary sector and the needs of voluntary sector organisations.

Additional Information

• Trustees do not receive any remuneration, but reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.
• The appointment is normally for a period of five years and a Trustee can serve no more than two terms of office, i.e. ten years.
