Compassionate Neighbours are trained volunteers offering friendship, support and listening ear to people living in their local community, sometimes with serious, long-term or terminal illness who often struggle with loneliness.

By popping round for a cup of tea or a friendly chat once a week you can make a world of difference. You will be a good listener, kind and have a genuine interest in other people.

As a Compassionate Neighbour Volunteer you’ll not only gain new skills, confidence, and social networks; you’ll be making a difference in your local community.

Full training and support is provided. Training for our next intake will be held at the Hospice on the following dates:
Saturdays 8 and 15  November 2025, 9.30am – 3.30pm

If you are unable to attend those, we have scheduled training later on in the New Year:
Wednesday 21 January & Friday 23 January 2026, 9.30am – 3.30pm

We’re looking for three amazing volunteers to join our Support Service team at the Charity for Action on Spiritual Abuse. This is a meaningful role where you’ll support people who’ve been hurt in religious, spiritual, or faith-based communities. 

What You’ll Be Doing 

As a Support Service Volunteer, you’ll be part of a team offering emotional support and guidance to people who’ve experienced spiritual abuse, or who have been hurt in religious, spiritual or faith-based communities.

You’ll start by arranging an initial call to listen to their story and help them figure out what kind of support they need. If they want more help, you can offer up to five follow-up calls, spaced apart fortnightly or longer. 

You’ll help people by: 

• Listening with care and compassion 
• Explaining what spiritual abuse is 
• Talking through their options if they want to report what happened 
• Helping them focus on what they need now and how to move forward 

What We’re Looking For 

You don’t need to be an expert, but we’re looking for people who: 

• Live in the UK 
• Have experience or training in listening, wellbeing, or safeguarding 
• Communicate clearly and kindly 
• Understand how abuse in faith settings can affect people — through personal experience, supporting others, or training 
• Are emotionally ready to support others (especially if you’ve been through something similar) 
• Can work well in a team and ask for help when needed 
• Have access to a computer and a private space to make calls online

Choice International is a UK based not-for-profit international development organisation that seeks to address inequality issues both overseas and within the UK. Any new governance #EMATters will ideally be local to, or have strong links to Northamptonshire and / or Milton Keynes and will have capacity to attend at least 6 x 2 hour meetings in person at our central office in Grange Park (Hybrid attendance is available when necessary).   We would particularly welcome those that have additional capacity to then attend opportunities throughout the academic year, to really get to know the trust, it's academies and all those that work and learn within them.
