Be trained to support young primary school children in numeracy, and help them to attain confidence and skills which will put them on a path to achieving their educational potential.
What will I be doing?
Numeracy, like literacy, is a vital life skill, but many children fall behind.
Following training, you will work one-to-one with six to eight year olds (school years 2 and 3) in a local state primary school to help them improve their confidence, enjoyment, and skills in maths. The school will select appropriate children who are behind in maths and likely to respond well to individual support.
Sessions are weekly, in school time, at a fixed time to be agreed between you and the school. Volunteers work one-to-one with each child for up to half an hour, normally with three children consecutively, for a total of about an hour and a half.
At each session, using games and other creative activities, you will support the child in learning or improving skills and gaining confidence in their own ability. The role is very much about helping the child learn, rather than you teaching.
Our Mentors (current or former teachers also volunteering with us) will provide you with direct support to help you plan sessions.
Where can you volunteer?
We partner with over 40 state primary schools across London - see our map on our website under "schools" then "partner schools"
Commitment
We ask volunteers to commit to a weekly session in school for the full school year. (Recognising that you will have to miss occasional weeks.)
What impact will this have?
You will be helping improve the educational and life chances of the children you work with. A child who is behind in maths aged six often develops a dislike for the subject and a belief that "I can't do maths" which can stay with them forever. Helping the child acquire skills and confidence can let them not just engage better with maths but can improve their whole attitude to education, giving them better chances in life.
Over half of the children we work with are "disadvantaged" in terms of being on pupil premium or having family difficulties. You will be giving these children support that may be missing at home.
You will not change the life of every child, but the experience of having a purposeful one-to-one relationship with a considerate adult from outside their family will be transformative for some children.
By helping to improve the performance of individual children, you are saving the teacher from having to devote so much time in class to them. This lets the teacher involve the whole class in better-received lessons, improving the educational experience for all the children.
What will I get out of it?
Training
Improving your coaching and interpersonal skills
Support through the year
Being active in your local community and meeting new people - including our other volunteers
Working with young children is (usually) fun and rewarding!
The great shared achievement when the child "gets it"
Some of our volunteers go on to a career in teaching.
We welcome - and we have - volunteers from a wide variety of ethnicities and backgrounds, reflecting the diversity of London. We will do our best to accommodate those with disabilities or access needs.
We don't need huge detail about you at this stage - we will ask relevant questions at an interview. However, we would like you to give a brief description of yourself (less than a full CV) and explain why you would like to volunteer with us.
We support primary school children in numeracy to help them achieve their educational and life potential.

A fantastic opportunity to build knowledge of the UK asylum system, gain experience of casework and deliver an essential service to asylum seekers.
About Care4Calais:
Care4Calais is a volunteer-based charity providing essential aid and support for refugees in France and the UK.
In northern France we operate year-round from Calais, providing warm clothing, bedding, food and assistance to refugees who live in appalling and dangerous conditions.
Across the UK we collect and distribute clothes, shoes, mobile phones and other essential items, as well as offering social support and interaction, including language lessons, sport and music workshops. We also help with vital access to legal, medical and educational services.
Our Legal Access Department is an access to justice project that exists to arrange critical legal representation for people seeking asylum and, more than this, to support people through the hostility and difficulty of claiming asylum. The department, made up mostly of volunteers, works tirelessly to ensure that people feel informed, empowered, and far less isolated and alone.
About the team:
The Public Law team operates within our Legal Access Department, which works to support clients navigating the complex and often traumatic asylum system in the UK. The Public Law team's main focus is on challenging issues relating to Home Office-provided accommodation. We support hundreds of clients accommodated at former MoD site RAF Wethersfield and in Home Office-run hotels across the UK. We provide one-to-one casework for individuals in unsuitable accommodation, gathering information to support a transfer request to more suitable accommodation, and gathering data and evidence for wider legal challenges and advocacy work. We believe that people seeking asylum have a right to feel safe in their accommodation.
As part of this team, you will be able to support clients independently and manage your own time and caseload, while also working as part of a team towards the same goal. If you thrive in a collaborative environment and are looking for a role where you can make a real difference, please apply!
Role description:

-
Working independently and managing your time, sometimes working to tight deadlines
-
Taking on new cases each week, whilst also providing ongoing support to existing clients
-
Sorting and organising client’s paperwork and accurately maintaining client records
-
Liaising with other professionals including lawyers, Migrant Help, and other C4C teams

Designing and Delivering Training: You'll help create and lead our core training sessions on topics like Introduction to Youth Work, Safeguarding and Child Protection, and Dealing with Challenging Behaviour and others.
-
Creating Engaging Workshops: You’ll plan and deliver fun, interactive workshops that keep our volunteers motivated and fully engaged with us, as well as build their skills, knowledge and experience.
-
Building a Learning Path: You’ll help develop a structured learning journey for all our volunteers, ensuring they have the tools they need to succeed at every stage of their role.
-
Sharing Expertise: You will find ways to keep our volunteers fully informed, motivated, and engaged with us and their role.
Who are we looking for?

-
A Natural Teacher: You're great at explaining things clearly and making a topic interesting.
-
Organised: You can plan sessions, create materials, and manage logistics effectively.
-
Empathetic: You can put yourself in a volunteer’s shoes and anticipate their training needs.
-
Passionate: You are motivated by the idea of empowering others to do great work.
This is a unique opportunity to gain experience in instructional design, public speaking, and programme management—all while making a lasting impact on our volunteers and the young people they serve.

We're planning to launch in January 2026 and need you to help us get set up and ready to launch to young people across London.
At URBAN YOUTH, volunteers are the heart of everything we do. We're looking for a special kind of volunteer to join our brand-new HR/Volunteering Team and take on a truly rewarding mission: recruiting, supporting, and empowering our volunteers of all roles and levels.
We are a brand new start-up youth work charity in London and we are very small team aiming to reach around 50 volunteers in our first year.
This role isn’t about working directly with young people; it's about being the positive force behind the positive forces. You'll be a core part of our mission by ensuring our volunteers have an amazing experience from their very first email to their ongoing journey with us. You will be with them on their full volunteer journey with us.
What you'll do:
-
Find Our Stars & Dream Team: You'll be the first point of contact for new volunteers, leading the recruitment and onboarding process.
-
Keep the Spark Alive: You'll find creative ways to keep our volunteers motivated, engaged, and feeling like a valued part of the URBAN YOUTH family.
-
Be a Partner in Their Journey: You'll be the go-to person for our volunteers, providing support, encouragement, and a listening ear throughout their time with us. Including Monthly Volunteer Meetings.
-
Share Your Skills: You'll help deliver relevant training sessions, giving our volunteers the tools they need to succeed in their roles.
-
HR/Volunteering Admin: You'll follow good practice, keeping all records and files of our volunteers, stored securely and you will be responsible for data protection. You will also lead on the policies, procedures, processes and HR/Volunteering Systems, including their set up, maintenance and management.
Who are we looking for?
Ideally you'll have HR or Volunteer Management experience. We're looking for passionate people with a big heart and a passion for people. You're perfect for this role if you are:
-
Organised: You're great at managing multiple tasks and keeping things on track.
-
Empathetic: You can connect with people from all walks of life and understand their needs.
-
A Natural Leader: You're motivated and can inspire others to do their best.
-
Committed: You understand the importance of consistency in a new and growing organisation.
This is a fantastic opportunity to gain experience in recruitment, people management, and programme development—all while playing a crucial role in building the foundation of a brand new charity.
