Your Role as a Mentor

As a mentor, you will hold weekly one-on-one sessions of 1-3 hours for the duration of 12 months. Chatterbox Befrienders offer one-to-one telephone support and will call a client once a week offering companionship and a listening ear for an individual who might otherwise go unheard. Chatterbox volunteers befriend a variety of people including carers, socially isolated individuals who are struggling with loneliness, people with ill health and those that have been bereaved.

This role could be for you, if you:

• Would like to make a real difference in someone’s life
• Want to challenge loneliness and can commit to a weekly phone call
• Are a good listener
• Are empathetic, patient and of a caring nature
• Have good verbal and inter-personal communication skills
• Recognise the importance of confidentiality and can uphold this in practice
• Are committed to inclusion and treating people with dignity and respect

Requirements of a Befriender include:

• Calling your client once a week for a chat of up to 45 minutes; this is a 26 week initial commitment, at the end of which each client’s needs are reviewed
• Completing an online call log record promptly after each phone call
• Ensuring immediate contact with the Chatterbox Coordinators if you feel that the client might be a risk to themselves or others
• Liaising with the Chatterbox Coordinator on a regular basis regarding the service, as well as discussing personal learning and development needs
• Respecting service standards, appropriate boundaries and recognising the range of policies and procedures that impact on befriending vulnerable adults

You'll ensure our governance remains robust and fit for the future, and that our Board continues to deliver collaboratively, constructively, and always aligned with our values.

You’ll also represent the charity externally to help us grow our network and strengthen local relationships, as well as amplifying our voice when the opportunity arises. You’ll also help us foster an environment where people feel valued, lived experience is in our central scope, and blind and partially sighted individuals remain at the heart of every decision we make.

We’re not just looking for someone to keep the wheels turning, we’re looking for a leader who understands how crucial it is to lead with integrity, empathy, and purpose. Someone who understands that the best kind of change evolves through collaboration, not control.

You don’t need to have been a Chair before, but you should bring experience as a senior leader in a professional setting or have worked closely with a CEO or senior executive. An understanding of charity governance is key, and we’re also looking for someone with flourishing people skills and a genuine commitment to inclusion and accessibility.

If you’ve got previous Trustee experience too, that’s a bonus.

We are The Unseen Barriers Foundation - a new, disabled-led Scottish charity (Incorporated as CLG with charity status pending) tackling the invisible causes of exclusion. Shame, sensory overload, emotional exhaustion, disbelief. These are the things that stop people from showing up - to appointments, to events, to life.

The Foundation is built around two original lived experience contributions by our founder:

• The Unseen Barriers Framework - a landmark conceptual model naming the distress-based barriers that keep disabled people locked out of support.
• Cùran - a green plush dragon created as a visual anchor for distress, shutdown, and solidarity.

Both are licensed to the Foundation by the creator to ensure they serve a purpose-first, rights-based mission.

We are now looking for trustees to help shape this work from the ground up. This is a working board - not a figurehead role. Trustees will actively contribute to strategic direction, governance, and growth.

We are currently remote-first to ensure full accessibility, but will provide office space (Edinburgh/Glasgow area) once funded. You do not need to be based in either city.

Estimated time commitment:

Around 10 hours per month including preparation, meetings, and task-based input.

Board meetings held quarterly via MS Teams.

All access needs will be fully accommodated.

From sensory-based experiences to creative challenges and accessible escape rooms, we’re breaking away from outdated models and designing events that are fun, innovative, and impactful.

The Events Coordinator will play a hands-on role in bringing these projects to life. Working closely with the Events & Entertainments Lead, you’ll help plan and deliver exciting events, ensuring everything runs smoothly on the day and that participants and supporters have a memorable experience.

This role is perfect for someone who enjoys organisation, teamwork, and creativity — someone who likes to see an idea grow into a successful event.

Key Responsibilities

• Work with the Events & Entertainments Lead to plan and deliver specific events and challenges.

• Help ensure events are well-organised, including:

  • Preparing and checking event locations

  • Allocating roles and tasks to volunteers and staff involved

  • Coordinating logistics before and during events

• Support with Health & Safety, insurance, and accessibility requirements (with guidance).

• Work as part of a team of multiple Event Coordinators, collaborating and sharing tasks.

• Take initiative in your area of responsibility, while knowing when to seek support or guidance.

• Analyse and report on the success of events, sharing feedback with the wider team to improve future activities.

Lived Experience Board Member (Advisory Role)

About the Role
At Living Reasons, we believe that real change comes from lived experience. To make sure everything we do is relevant, effective, and grounded in the realities of people’s lives, we are creating a Lived Experience Advisory Board.

This is a non-executive, advisory role. Board members do not carry trustee responsibilities but instead play a vital part in shaping and guiding the organisation. The insights and perspectives of our board members will directly inform the decisions of our trustees, helping us stay focused on what truly matters to the people we support.

How the Board Works

• The board is made up of different lived experience groups, each focusing on particular areas.

• Members can meet in their groups to share experiences, support one another, and identify key issues.

• Groups can also set up their own sub-groups where needed.

• Each group decides what information it wants to share with Living Reasons — members are always in control of their voice.

• From time to time, the full board meets together to discuss wider themes, shared experiences, and how these can guide the direction of Living Reasons.

What You’ll Do

• Share your lived experience in a safe, respectful group setting.

• Take part in discussions, focus groups, and community support activities.

• Contribute to shaping campaigns, policies, and services.

• Review materials, research, and proposals and give feedback to help the organisation grow.

• People with lived experience of wheel chair use, either:

  • through your own personal experience, or

  • as a supporter, caregiver, guardian, or family member.

We will keep these as two separate groups (personal experience, and supporter/caregiver) so that conversations can be open and relevant to each perspective.

What is the plan?

The person who is starting the charity up is autistic, has ADHD, CPTSD and also multiple physical conditions that effect daily life and is part of the LGBTQ+ community and has faced a lot of issues in life because of these things.

Living Reasons is being created to fix what we think is a challenging situation that is getting harder to achieve every week, month and year in the current economic, political, environmental and societal landscape. It is not easily defined but we hope the charity objects below will help put context to what we want to achieve, what we can say is that below are the issues we are trying to address, how we do this will change as quickly as society does, but the issues we want to tackle are these:

Volunteering for Sense

Sense is a leading disability charity with extensive knowledge and expertise in delivering personalised, creative and flexible support for disabled people with complex needs. Our tailored approach ensures that every person is empowered to live fully at every stage of life.

Due to the nature of the role, we require all applicants to be aged 16 or over. You must have a UK address to volunteer with Sense.

What your role will involve

You’ll get the opportunity to get involved in a wide range of activities, including:

• Welcoming and assisting customers, providing great customer service, helping create a wonderful shopping experience.
• Receiving donated items from the public, thanking them for their support.
• Sorting, steaming and preparing donations for sale.
• Helping to display stock in eye-catching and exciting ways.
• Keeping the shop floor clean, safe and tidy.
• Talking to customers about Sense and the work we do. 

When you’re ready, we’ll provide you with additional training to:

• Serve customers on the till in a warm and friendly way.
• Put sales through the till, packing them and thanking the customer for shopping with us.
• Talk to customers about Gift Aid and other fundraising initiatives.

If you’re interested in taking on additional responsibilities, you can train to become a Key Volunteer, helping the shop manager by:

• Helping supervise the shop and other volunteers.
• Supporting the shop manager to make sure customers have a great experience.
• Opening and closing the shop when needed.
• Cashing up at the end of the day.
