About the Role
At Living Reasons, we believe that real change comes from lived experience. To make sure everything we do is relevant, effective, and grounded in the realities of people’s lives, we are creating a Lived Experience Advisory Board.
This is a non-executive, advisory role. Board members do not carry trustee responsibilities but instead play a vital part in shaping and guiding the organisation. The insights and perspectives of our board members will directly inform the decisions of our trustees, helping us stay focused on what truly matters to the people we support.
How the Board Works

The board is made up of different lived experience groups, each focusing on particular areas.

Members can meet in their groups to share experiences, support one another, and identify key issues.

Groups can also set up their own sub-groups where needed.

Each group decides what information it wants to share with Living Reasons — members are always in control of their voice.

From time to time, the full board meets together to discuss wider themes, shared experiences, and how these can guide the direction of Living Reasons.

It is not easily defined but we hope the charity objects below will help put context to what we want to achieve, what we can say is that below are the issues we are trying to address, how we do this will change as quickly as society does, but the issues we want to tackle are these:

No Panic is a national charity helping people to manage their anxiety.
We are looking for empathetic, understanding, confident and driven people to volunteer on our helpline. We are specifically looking for people who have experience of providing training to staff or volunteers.
Working from home, successful applicants will answer helpline calls and provide support and advice for people with a range of anxiety disorders, by listening, offering self-help advice, and providing information about the range of support available from No Panic.
After gaining experience on the helpline, successful applicants will also go on to deliver helpline training courses to new volunteers, currently lasting 8 weeks, and provide ongoing support.
All volunteers on the No Panic Helpline are required to complete the training of 1.5 hours a week for 8 weeks; they then do a weekly 3-hour shift. Trainers deliver 3 courses per year. Please note, we ask for a 1-year commitment to volunteering on the helpline, to aid our planning.

Logistics & Operations:

Events Officer has the responisbility of organising (along with the help of a Trustee Events Manager) our magical visits to children/adults with LD, this could be at the hospital, social groups, refugee centres, libraries etc etc.

We’re passionate about what we do, and love giving second-hand clothing a chance of going to a good home. Our shop teams are key to raising vital funds for our work and act as incredible advocates for the rights of children both in the UK and around the world.

Volunteering in the shop
Our Storrington Shop Volunteers are in the middle of it all, and there’s plenty to get involved with. You might be sorting and pricing stock, engaging with customers, ringing items through the till, creating fantastic window displays or keeping our shop floor looking organised.
It’s up to you how much you commit. We have volunteers who support for a couple of hours a week and some do more. Many people volunteer either a morning or an afternoon each week - this is something that will be discussed at the selection stage, after you’ve applied.

Every child should have good food to fuel their bodies and every child should have medicine when they're sick.
Skills and experiences we seek
We welcome applications from people with a wide range of skills and experiences. You don’t need any retail or shop experience as full training will be provided. What’s important to us is that you are a team player, open to learning and to follow our policies as well as be an excellent representative for Save the Children.
We know that our shop teams are stronger when they are inclusive and representative of their communities. Everybody can make a real difference. People come to us for all sorts of reasons, from all backgrounds, and we will do what we can to find a role that works for you.
What happens next?
After you’ve filled in an application, we will invite you for an informal trial shift. It’s a great opportunity to visit the shop, meet some of our existing volunteers and have a go at some of the tasks that you would be supporting with as a shop volunteer. Hopefully allowing you to get a feel for the role and make sure it’s for you. We also ask for a couple of references (these don’t have to be formal workplace ones, just someone who has known you for over 6 months and isn’t related).

Purpose of the Role
As a Non-Executive Director, you’ll bring your skills, insights, and lived experience to help shape our strategic direction and keep us accountable. You won’t be involved in day-to-day operations — instead, you’ll act as a critical friend: offering challenge, support, and specialist advice when needed.
Non-Executive Directors ensure that our governance is robust, ethical, and in service of the communities we exist for.

Contribute to setting and reviewing our vision, mission, and long-term plans. Offer constructive challenge and help the Board make informed, brave decisions.

Hold the Executive Directors and wider team to account for delivery of agreed plans, compliance, and ethical practice.

Safeguard our Values:
Uphold our principles of integrity, anti-oppression, collective liberation, and queer joy in every decision and discussion.

Bring Specialist Insight:
Offer your unique expertise, perspective, or lived experience to strengthen our understanding of the issues facing our communities.

Attend meetings, read papers in advance, declare any conflicts of interest, and participate actively in discussions and decisions.

Act as an Ambassador:
Represent Queer Beyond Belief positively and help build trusted relationships with our communities and allies.
What we’re looking for
