Job description

AMASANGO is a special needs school in Grahamstown / Makhanda, South Africa that enables marginalised young people and Street Children to thrive by gaining an education and vocational skills.

The Friends of AMASANGO is a UK based Christian registered charity (No 1116268), that was founded in 2005 and provides:

  • two meals a day and food parcels for the weekend
  • school uniforms, shoes, coats
  • support for ex-pupils who go on to high school
  • stipends for a number of extra staff at the school over and above that funded by the local Government
  • teaching equipment and tools

The Friends fund facilities not provided by the provincial government and facilitate a volunteering programme at the school.

Children often have no financial support or family backing, so the food, clothing and transport supplied by the school and funded by this charity, make attendance at school possible.

The Charity has no paid employees but provides the financial support and guidance needed to facilitate the extra provisions needed at the school and that have resulted in continuous success of past pupils excelling in their future lives. .

Job description

We are looking for our next Chair of Trustees, to take over, probably after a short introductory period, from our current Chair who has been in post for 10 years and has to retire for reasons of age/health. The new Chair will work closely with our Team of 9 experienced and long-standing Trustees, who are scattered all over the UK, to guide the organisation through what is both a challenging and genuinely exciting time, as the School moves to new premises and plans to add extensive further vocational training to add to the existing academic and some skill courses all supported by new Strategic Plans that are evolving and need implementing . The funding environment is tough. The political context is difficult. And yet the need for what we do has never been greater.

This is an unpaid voluntary role. Reasonable out-of-pocket expenses will be reimbursed if required.

The successful candidate will lead a motivated, committed and well-established, national charity as it navigates the next chapter of its story supporting the education of deprived children in Grahamstown / Makhanda, South Africa .

Main tasks

  • Contributing to, developing and setting our future strategy, alongside the Trustees and leading its implementation
  • Helping shape and deliver our future, identifying opportunities in an evolving landscape
  • Providing general leadership and guidance of the Trustees
  • Helping build a collaborative team of the Trustee and helpers.
  • Acting as an ambassador for the charity – raising awareness of what we do and engaging potential supporters and other key stakeholders.
  • Responsibility, along with the other trustees, for the governance of the charity.
  • Leading the Monthly, on line, Trustee meetings and, as necessary, sub-committees in an inclusive and thoughtful way

Additional notes;

Time requirement: This is very much up to the successful candidate but on average will involve roughly;

  • 1 hour monthly on-line Trustee meeting plus
  • Approx 2 hrs / week, discussions on the phone/on line with Trustees and others.
  • Approx half day attendance at the Annual AGM held somewhere in the UK.
  • Involvement as necessary in fund raising activities

Qualifications/Experience:

We are looking for someone who has been, or is interested in, stepping up to a trustee Chairman role, either straight away or possibly after a short introductory period as a Trustee.

Ideally, they will have had some experience of running businesses or charities, preferably with a background in education, or at least in working with children/young people and who has the leadership experience and skills to lead a team of motivated Trustees and who can show their ability at developing and leading new and stimulating strategies to help the charity/school move forward

We have Trustees with the necessary experience/skills in Finance, IT, Local contacts with schools and churches, some volunteering experience and education, but we would be particularly interested in people with knowledge and experience in;

  • Marketing & Social Media
  • Accessing Trust Funds
  • Generating Corporate Sponsorship
  • Developing Fund Raising Campaigns

Location:  There is no location requirement as our charity is National, our Trustees are scattered all over the UK and most of the communication is done by phone/ online (Zoom/Teams)

Scale: This is small committed friendly charity with an effective team of Trustees who on average generate & spend in the School, approx. £50,000 per annum, using this money to make a real difference in the underprivileged, very needy children at the school
