For almost 500 years, we've supported Southwark's communities. Now we're looking for two new Trustees to help shape our next chapter — including building on the legacy of Appleby Blue, our RIBA Stirling Prize-winning almshouse.
United St Saviour's Charity is a place-based community investor in Southwark, providing almshouses, grant-funding and community programmes that build resilience and connection across the borough. Over the last decade we've nearly doubled our housing provision and delivered Appleby Blue — a social housing development for older people that went on to win the RIBA Stirling Prize, the UK's most prestigious architecture award.
This role is for you if:
- You understand what effective governance looks like — strategic planning, risk management, and change management
- You have a strong lived or learned understanding of Southwark and its communities, including both local strengths and the barriers that affect opportunity and wellbeing
- You bring experience in one or more of: housing and property development, organisational governance, community development, or finance and accounting
- You're comfortable raising challenge and disagreeing constructively, while standing by decisions the Board reaches collectively
- You have a good level of IT literacy
- No previous trustee or board experience is required — a genuine willingness to learn matters just as much
What you'll do
As a Trustee, you'll share collective responsibility for our governance, working alongside fellow Trustees and the Chair to hold the organisation to a clear strategy, ensure our assets and resources are used well You'll contribute your own skills and experience to strengthen the Board's decision-making, sit on at least one, and up to two, committees, and act as an ambassador for the charity's values and reputation.
You'll be joining at a pivotal moment: we're scaling up our housing development pipeline, delivering a new Community Investment Strategy for 2025–2030, and increasingly being asked to share what we've learned with other boroughs and housing providers as our national influence grows.
We're looking for people with experience in one or more of:
- Organisational development and governance — overseeing organisational development, governance, HR, or strategic oversight
- Community development — community work and wealth, charitable organisations, social investment, or grant-making
- Housing, land and property — housing, property development, planning, property management or property investment
- Finance and accounting — accounting, financial management, investment portfolios, and managing financial risk responsibly
You don't need all four — one or more is enough. Alongside that, we're looking for a strong lived or learned understanding of Southwark and the communities we serve, and a good level of IT literacy. No previous trustee or board experience is required.
Location and time commitment
Based in the London Borough of Southwark — Board and committee meetings take place at our offices and almshouses. The board of LGBT Foundation is the first and last decision-making mechanism of the charity and trustees also constitute the membership of the charity. The board has several mechanisms in place to consult with key stakeholders, (such as staff, volunteers and service users), to inform our work and decision-making.
All new trustees are required to undertake an induction programme, including the provision of an extensive induction pack, staff presentations, and peer mentoring as desired. To support the work of our board, we have three committees. These are:
Fundraising & Marketing Committee – maintains an overview of strategic fundraising, marketing, and communications.

Chair of the Board — United St Saviour's Charity
For almost 500 years, we've supported Southwark's communities. Now we're looking for a new Chair to help lead our next chapter — including delivering the RIBA Stirling Prize-winning legacy of Appleby Blue into a bold ten-year strategy.

About Lights Up
Lights Up was established shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic to support theatre and creative activity. The timing was challenging: theatres subsequently remained closed for a prolonged period and the environment in which the charity had been established changed considerably.
The existing trustees now believe that Lights Up's charitable structure and fundraising capability could be put to wider social use. In particular, we are exploring an evolution of the charity that would enable it to provide umbrella funding and support for organisations and initiatives tackling homelessness.
No change of objects has yet been made. As part of this process, and following discussions with the Charity Commission, we are recruiting a new Board of Trustees before the proposed changes are considered and progressed.
The opportunity
We are looking for new trustees to help oversee the next stage of Lights Up's development.
One of the founding trustees will remain with the charity in an operational role as Executive Founder, reporting to and accountable to the Board. The other founding trustee will retire from the Board.
The new trustees will therefore have a genuine governance role: overseeing the charity's strategy, finances, regulatory compliance and future direction, including consideration and implementation of any approved changes to its charitable objects.
If the proposed new model proceeds, the charity does not intend to make decisions about the distribution of homelessness funding based solely on its own expertise. Funding allocations will be informed by advice from an appropriate independent third-party expert with relevant sector knowledge.
Who are we looking for?
We would particularly welcome applications from people interested in becoming a trustee for the first time. Previous charity or trustee experience is not required.
We are looking for people with sound judgement, integrity and an interest in using their skills to support effective charitable governance.
Experience in finance, law, governance, grant-making, fundraising, homelessness, social impact or the voluntary sector would be useful, but is not essential.
We are also seeking a Chair of Trustees, for whom previous governance or relevant board-level experience is expected.
Commitment
The roles are voluntary and primarily governance-focused. We anticipate approximately four Board meetings each year, predominantly held remotely, together with occasional additional input when required.
Why join now?
This is an opportunity to join a small charity at an exciting point in its development.
Rather than recruiting trustees to oversee an established model, we are inviting new Board members to help scrutinise, shape and govern the charity's proposed next chapter.
We want to be transparent about where Lights Up has come from, why change is being considered, and the responsibility the new Board will have in determining how that change is taken forward.
How to apply
Please send us a short expression of interest outlining your background, what you could bring to the Board and why the role interests you.
Please indicate if you would also like to be considered for the role of Chair of Trustees.
