As a Trustee, you will play a crucial role in shaping our future. You’ll help guide our strategy, ensure we remain true to our values, and support us in reaching even more families who need our help. Your expertise, insight, and passion can help us grow and innovate, so that no family is left behind when it comes to the simple joy of time away together.
About our Trustee Team
Our Trustees are a team of volunteers who use their diverse skills, experiences, and perspectives to set the strategic direction of the charity and make sure it’s doing what it was set up to do in the best possible way.
Family Holiday Charity has an ambitious strategy over the next few years, which will see us expand our services to families, develop our influencing work within the travel and leisure industry and government, and evolve our ways of working so that we can accept and use gifted breaks, travel and other services at scale, to give families who really need it a holiday.
To help us do all that we’ll need the guidance, challenge, connections, and support of all our Trustees.
Given our goals, we’re particularly looking to add the following professional skills and experiences to our team.
- HR-Focused- a Trustee who will serve as Chair of the Nomination & Remuneration Committee, providing strategic oversight of people, culture and organisational development whilst acting as the Board’s Safeguarding lead and supporting the Charity’s safeguarding assurance framework. Prior safeguarding experience is desirable but not essential.
The Commitment
We’ll ask you to participate in four two-hour Board Meetings per year, typically in person at our office in London or remotely.We also get together for a Strategy Day in September/October, which is held on a weekday in London, and you’d need to attend that in person.
We can support with any access needs for in-person meetings.,
There are two Board sub-committees- one which focuses on our Finances and Risk, and one which considers our people (Trustees and Staff). Once you’ve settled into the role, most Trustees join one of them. They meet remotely around four times a year.
Outside of formal meetings, you’ll be warmly encouraged to get to know the staff team, and attend fundraising events
or other events to meet referrers, families, and supporters wherever possible.
Overall, you’ll need to be able to commit around 6 hours each month for a mix of meetings and events, contributing
your skills and perspective to projects, building your knowledge of the charity and developing as a Trustee.

- Fundraising Heroes - Whether it’s rallying local businesses, organising events, or getting creative with unique fundraising ideas, you’ll play a crucial role in keeping SSAFA’s support going strong.
- Administrators - Are you detail-oriented and love keeping things organised? Assist with branch and event administration, manage schedules and branch calendars, and ensure everything runs smoothly currently being undertaken.
The skills you need
- Be friendly and approachable.
- Confident to engage with the public, potential clients, volunteers and SSAFA colleagues face-to-face.
- Reliable attitude, staying connected with your Branch and/or Community Engagement Manager about your availability.
- Access to public transport or a car to get to events if necessary.
- Basic IT skills would be an advantage.

Support the work of St John Ambulance in your community by volunteering as a Community Volunteer, an exciting new role which is designed to revamp how volunteering looks in the modern world; flexible, innovative and is open for all.
We need people who have a passion for helping others, care about their communities and want to make a difference, supporting them to become safe and more resilient. - Self-motivated and proactive in seeking opportunities.
Fundraising researcher:
Help boost Sense’s regional income by researching available grants, partnerships and other local connections. Responsibilities include:
- Researching local grants and business partnerships.
- Researching networking events.
- Helping us to source prizes for Sense fundraising events.
Skills needed:
- Self-motivated, with the ability to work independently.
- Organised, ensuring new leads are accurately recorded and shared.
Community connector:
Act as an ambassador for Sense, attending events across your community to thank supporters, and forge new partnerships.
- Attending cheque presentations, thanking our supporters.
- Giving presentations about Sense to local schools and community groups.
- Engaging with local businesses and groups, to forge new relationships for Sense.

- Strong communication skills and enjoys public speaking opportunities.

Role – Community Engagement Volunteer
Are you passionate about supporting the Armed Forces Community? Could you help to raise awareness for SSAFA in your local area? You don’t need a military background, just the ability to get on with all kinds of people and some occasional free time.
What is a Community Engagement Volunteer?
As a community engagement volunteer, you and your fellow branch members will create a range of activities to help spread the word about SSAFA within your community. We want to ensure that our Armed Forces community knows that SSAFA is here to help and that we need the public’s support to continue offering our services.
Why do we need you?
We’ve been supporting the Armed Forces community since 1885. Our clients come from all backgrounds and age groups and may have served in WW2 or in a more recent conflict like the Falklands or Afghanistan.
There are SSAFA branches throughout the UK and overseas who support local volunteers to deliver services to veterans, serving personnel and their families.
A varied programme of awareness raising also keeps the SSAFA profile high in the local community, so everyone knows who we are and how we can help.
When would you be needed and where would you be based?
This role is diverse and allows for you to focus on the areas that you have skills or interests in. The role has flexibility and can work around your other commitments.

Role – Community Engagement Volunteer

What is a Community Engagement Volunteer?
As a community engagement volunteer, you and your fellow branch members will create a range of activities to help spread the word about SSAFA within your community. We want to ensure that our Armed Forces community knows that SSAFA is here to help and that we need the public’s support to continue offering our services.
Why do we need you?
We’ve been supporting the Armed Forces community since 1885. Our clients come from all backgrounds and age groups and may have served in WW2 or in a more recent conflict like the Falklands or Afghanistan.
There are SSAFA branches throughout the UK and overseas who support local volunteers to deliver services to veterans, serving personnel and their families.
A varied programme of awareness raising also keeps the SSAFA profile high in the local community, so everyone knows who we are and how we can help.
When would you be needed and where would you be based?
This role is diverse and allows for you to focus on the areas that you have skills or interests in. The role has flexibility and can work around your other commitments.

About the role:
As a community champion volunteer you’ll be supporting Sense’s fundraising team, playing a vital role in helping Sense to raise funds and awareness to support people with complex disabilities.
You’ll engage with individuals, local businesses, and regional press to share our mission, organise events, and inspire others to take action. Whether you’re great at planning events, researching opportunities or connecting with your community, this role has something for you.
This is a flexible role, with the opportunity to volunteer either virtually or in your local community. We are looking for volunteers able to offer a minimum commitment of 2 hours per month.
We’re looking for people who are passionate about Sense’s work to support disabled people with complex needs and who have a calm, kind and friendly personality.
Please note that you will not be providing care for the people Sense supports as part of this role.
Due to the nature of the volunteer role, we cannot accept applications for anyone under the age of 18.
The four areas of the role:
As a Community Champion, you’ll have the opportunity to take part in a variety of activities, organised into four main role categories. You can choose to get involved in one or more of these areas, and we’ll discuss your preferences with you as part of the application process. Please note, we don’t expect volunteers to take on every area. Instead, we’ll focus on what interests you most and shape the role around your strengths and skills.
Event volunteer:
Support Sense’s Community Fundraising team by:
- Organising your own fundraising events in aid of Sense.
- Supporting and participating in fundraising events at your local Sense services, and shops.
- Supporting with fundraising admin, for example sourcing prizes for Sense fundraisers.
Skills needed:
- Creative, with fresh fundraising ideas and enthusiasm.
- Organised, with the ability help co-ordinate multiple aspects of an event.
Local public relations (PR) volunteer:
Boost Sense’s profile in your local community by:
- Writing content for local press releases.
- Building a network of local media contacts.
- Supporting regional output of national campaigns.

- Self-motivated and proactive in seeking opportunities.
Fundraising researcher:
Help boost Sense’s regional income by researching available grants, partnerships and other local connections. Responsibilities include:

- Helping us to source prizes for Sense fundraising events.
Skills needed:
- Self-motivated, with the ability to work independently.
- Organised, ensuring new leads are accurately recorded and shared.
Community connector:
Act as an ambassador for Sense, attending events across your community to thank supporters, and forge new partnerships.
- Attending cheque presentations, thanking our supporters.
- Giving presentations about Sense to local schools and community groups.
- Engaging with local businesses and groups, to forge new relationships for Sense.

- Strong communication skills and enjoys public speaking opportunities.
