As an Object Handling Volunteer, you will engage visitors with objects from our Object Handling Collection. These are objects similar to those displayed in the museum that visitors can pick up and examine. From Kodak brownie cameras and magic lantern slides, to optical toys and Gameboys, hands‑on encounters ignite curiosity and bring to life the story of how sound and vision technologies impact our lives.
By engaging visitors with our Object Handling Collection, you will spark conversations and develop visitors’ interest in the museum’s collections. Along the way, you’ll develop your understanding of visitor experience and museum learning, while sharing your enthusiasm for historical and STEM stories with visitors of all ages. You’ll also be a friendly point of contact for anyone wanting to know more about the museum and what’s on. Full training will equip you to handle objects with care, and learn and share engaging information.
By facilitating safe, accessible object handling, you’ll enrich the visitor experience and inspire our visitors.
This role will operate 7 days a week during school holidays, starting with the upcoming summer break (Sat 18 July-Sun 30 Aug), then weekends only during term time. A rota will be made on a rolling basis based on everyone’s availability and preferences.

Training and support:

The Admissions Assistant receives continued training and development throughout their time with us.
Availability:
We are looking for volunteers who would ideally like to donate 2-4 shifts per month, weekdays or weekends, either as a 10-1.30pm shift, or a 1.30-5pm shift, for a minimum of 3 months. Ideally, you will be able to start immediately, although this is not essential. Travel expenses up to £5 will be paid, with up to an additional £5 for lunch expenses if you are on a full day shift.
Please note: Applicants from some overseas countries are required to have a relevant work permit or student visa to volunteer in the U.K. We’ll need to see this for our records before volunteering can commence.

OOEF runs two different music clubs at our primary schools: a lunchtime club for younger children who are just discovering instruments, and an after-school club for older children who have had some experience and want to take it further. Both are relaxed, informal settings — very different from the classroom — and both need volunteers to support the children and the lead practitioner. Experience playing an instrument is helpful, but not vital. If you are patient, reliable and love music, we would love to hear from you.
About the role
Orchestra of Everything Foundation (OOEF) delivers free, immersive music education to around 250 children aged 7–11 at St Michael's Junior School in Twerton and Roundhill Primary in Whiteway — two schools in nationally ranked deprived communities. Our impact is off the scale: school leaders tell us that 86% of children show improved attitudes to learning across all subjects, and we have been instrumental in a 39% reduction in pupil suspensions. Our work has caught the attention of the Department for Education, and Bath Spa University now incorporates our model into teacher training.
As a club helper you will support the lead practitioner and the children — helping set up and pack away instruments, encouraging children who are hesitant, celebrating small breakthroughs, and being a warm, reliable adult presence in a setting where that matters enormously. The lunchtime club is for younger children's first experiences with the instruments; the after-school club has a slightly older group who have been learning for longer. Both need volunteers who can adapt to the mood of the room. You will work in a team of 5–10 at all times.
