Durham students created Durham SU in 1899 as the Student Representative Council, the first and only thing owned by every single student at our university, no matter what their course or College.
Over one hundred years later, student life is very different, but much of what we think is important and the way we work would be recognisable to our founders. We’re still unique at Durham, because we belong to every single student, and we’re where every single student belongs.
Durham is a leading students’ union, working with a world-class university, in an exceptional city, and our foundations are strong. We’re proud and privileged to be able to use this heritage to be ambitious about our future.
Our Board of Trustees is now looking for two new members of, and we’re so pleased you may be interested in helping us to bring students together to make Durham University fairer and better.
About the Role
This is a fantastic opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of students in Durham. As an External Trustee, you will play a key role in setting and monitoring Durham SU’s strategy, providing financial oversight, managing risk, and ensuring the organisation remains fit for purpose. The Board meets five times per year, with trustees also invited to engage in other opportunities such as sitting on an appointments panel, meeting with auditors or attending a student awards ceremony
Durham SU is keen to hear from individuals who are curious, genuine and enthusiastic about Durham SU doing well. They are particularly interested in candidates who bring knowledge of the Higher Education sector or Students' Unions, and experience in political, corporate or financial settings.
Durham SU will also welcome applications from first-time trustees and aim to have an inclusive Board with diverse perspectives and backgrounds.

Finance Trustee - Citizens Advice
Citizens Advice South Lincolnshire is seeking a trustee with financial experience to help shape the future of our high-performing advice charity.
With offices in Grantham, Spalding and Stamford, plus outreach centres across the region, we support a population of 225,000 people. Last year, we helped 14,000 clients with 60,000 issues and secured over £7 million of additional income for them. We are here for everyone to help people move on with their lives.
As a trustee, you will join a well-known, respected charity, influence strategy, strengthen governance and contribute to meaningful change. This is an opportunity to share your expertise with other professional, dedicated trustees, gain valuable experience, build on your leadership and strategy skills, and increase your employability. Previous Board experience would be an advantage, but is not essential.
You will guide the Board and the Chief Executive Officer on the key assumptions and financial implications of budgets and plans. You will use your financial knowledge and understanding to oversee the financial management of the charity and advise the Board.
You will monitor the charity’s financial performance and support the CEO and financial team in areas such as budgeting, clear and accurate financial reporting and financial compliance. This is an opportunity for you to:

The time commitment is four in-person Board meetings and four or five remote committee meetings a year, a Board Away Day and an involvement of 1-2 days per month with the Finance Team.
What do you need to become a trustee?
Trustees don’t need specific qualifications, but we expect all trustees to have
six core skills:
● Insight into the organisation: considering CASL’s objects and its public
benefit strategically
● Challenging constructively: clarifying facts; stimulating thought
● Analysing issues: being objective; evaluating risks; using evidence;
planning ahead
● Weighing up opinions: using evidence; balancing long- and short-term;
prioritising value
● Interpersonal skills: communicating clearly; listening actively;
supporting a healthy culture, and
● Confidence and self-awareness: collaborating with others; treating
everyone with respect.
In addition, as Finance Trustee you will need:
● financial literacy, including experience of creating and managing
budgets
● ability to interpret financial information and communicate it clearly, and
● strong analytical skills.
For this role, we also value:
● experience of working in finance, accounting and/or audit
● experience in charity finance, SORP, or nonprofit financial management
● familiarity with financial software, and/or
● experience of Board or committee work.
Finally, competent trustees should have these six personal qualities to some
extent, and demonstrate them in their behaviours:

Do you want to invest your time supporting women who are marginalised in Tower Hamlets? Do you feel called to social justice and want to do something about it? For over 20 years we have been supporting women involved in selling sex. Many of the women credit our Door of Hope project with being key to their sense of wellbeing whilst on the streets and for some, their exit from selling sex.
We are recruiting new volunteers to continue delivering consistent outreach, early morning, and late evening, spanning different days of the week.
- We need volunteers to work with the women we support. We are looking for women with:
- A vision for reaching out to women involved in/affected by selling sex/sexual exploitation.
- Empathy, compassion and a non-judgmental approach.
- An ability to build trusting relationships whilst maintaining personal boundaries.
What you can expect from us

- A positive volunteering environment, including volunteer induction and ongoing supervision and support.
- Safeguarding and outreach training
- Access to organisational training around working with women, for no fee.
What we ask from you
- A regular time commitment to take part in outreach.
- Be available to attend Induction and training sessions (including a Christmas social)
- A commitment to reflective practice – taking good care of yourself, contributing to team or 1-1 supervision, responding reflectively to your experiences with Door of Hope
- An openness to learning and working together.
- Availability to attend team training’s 4-5 events a year (usually on a Monday evening)
We are looking for local volunteers:
- If you live within 8 miles of Tower Hamlets, we can cover the cost of safe transport home via Taxi.
- If you live outside an 8-mile radius of Tower Hamlets it would be helpful if you had access to a car, or be willing to contribute to the cost of a taxi home.
