We’re looking for an outstanding trustee who is a bold and visionary leader in their field to join our Board of Trustees. You will help us achieve our vision of making sure our members have an outstanding experience during their time at UCL and at one of the best student unions in the world.

We’re looking for an inspirational leader in a field related to one of our services or values to join us in our mission. That mission is to build a vibrant and empowered student community with real influence in UCL and beyond, that enables students to enjoy their time at university; pursue their interests and passions; see the world in new ways; and develop the skills and experience to change the world for better.

The Board of Trustees is responsible for setting the mission, vision and values of the Students’ Union and for ensuring the delivery of organisational purpose through our 2025-2030 Strategy, Making More Happen. The Trustees ensure development of, and agree, a long-term strategy and approve and monitor plans and budgets to deliver the strategy. There are five meetings a year, and as an External Trustee you will work with our Board and Senior Management Team to affect change and ensure everything we do for our 50,000 members is led by our values to be Community Building, Empowering, Inclusive, Democratic, Bold, Sustainable and Fun.

The Role
While our sustainable travel initiatives fund our ongoing social operations, we are seeking a highly strategic Grants & Bid Writer to spearhead our external funding strategy. You will help us scale our impact by securing social enterprise grants, community development funds, and innovation awards.

You will be responsible for:

• Strategic Bid Writing: Translating our complex dual-impact model into compelling, successful grant applications for social enterprise and community impact funders.
   

• Funding the Future: Securing capital to fund our core social mission expansions, including scaling our digital literacy programmes and on-the-ground initiatives.
   

• Partnership Sourcing: Identifying new Trusts, Foundations, and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) partners whose values align with our radical transparency and ethical ethos.
   

• Pipeline Management: Tracking application deadlines and maintaining a clear, organized pipeline of funding opportunities.

What is the purpose of this role?

The Sybil Levin Day Service is a specialist SPECAL-Led day service supporting people with dementia and their carers using the SPECAL method.

What activities might you be involved in?

• Assisting centre attendees to engage in activities.
• Serving meals and drinks.
• Helping to set up and clear away activities.
• Engaging in conversation with centre attendees.
• Volunteering in line with the Charity’s policies and procedures and adhering to the Volunteer Code of Conduct

What are we looking for?

• People with a genuine interest in the wellbeing of people with dementia.
• A friendly, sensitive and kind approach.
• Being comfortable in small groups or on a one to one basis.
• People with a commitment to using the SPECAL method at all times whilst at the centre.

When would you be needed to volunteer?

The centre is open from Monday to Friday and would like volunteers to commit to a morning or afternoon at least once a week as a minimum.

What training will you be given?

You will be given all the training you need to enable you to carry out your role.  This will include a thorough Charity induction and a departmental induction to provide further information about the role.  You will also be given access to our online training library to complete the training modules that are mandatory for your role.

You will receive SPECAL training prior to commencing your role.

Chair of Trustees role:

You will be chairing the Board of Trustees, ensuring that we have minimum representation required for decisions to be made, keeping the board aligned in decision-making, ensuring all minutes are recorded and that all decisions by trustees are made with the appropriate context provided.

This is a great opportunity to develop further governance skills and experience, and help steer an important charity in the right direction.

Trustees meetings are usually held every six weeks, plus there is an AGM, away days, and any sub-committee meetings that trustees may be involved in. Most meetings will remain virtual but there will from time to time be a need to attend key meetings and events in Nottingham. The time commitment is approximately 4hours per month, but there may be occasions when more time is required for a short period.

Who are we looking for?

• Previous chairing experience
• Relevant experience in any of the following financial management, HR, charities, fundraising, social prescribing, NHS, health inequalities (including deaf community), local authorities, marketing, business development, governance, strategy or legal
• A willingness to devote the necessary time and effort
• Good, independent judgement
• The ability to challenge and ask questions
• An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship
• A commitment to Nolan’s seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty, and leadership

NB: We are looking for both a Chair of Trustees and additional Trustees (particularly those with a finance background, but other functions are also welcome). If you are interested in a Trustee role instead of the Chair role, please mention this in your covering letter when applying.

Self Help UK is a leading peer support organisation with over 40 years of experience in developing and delivering peer-led services. Our mission is to empower individuals and communities by embedding peer support principles into health and wellbeing initiatives. We have created a range of innovative programmes that help people living with cancer and other long-term health conditions to navigate challenges and take control of their health and wellbeing.

We work in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support on projects that make a real difference. These include national and local initiatives for the Deaf community, volunteer-led support for anyone affected by cancer, and prehabilitation services for those facing complex treatment. In 2026, we will collaborate with our Integrated Care System to improve health literacy and increase cancer screening uptake among underserved communities in Nottingham. Youth Helper work directly with young people in St John Ambulance Badger Setts and Cadet Units. By supporting our Youth Leaders to deliver a sessions across our range of programmes. In this role, you'll support the learning and development of young people into the next generation of health citizens. Youth Helpers also help young people develop their confidence, teamwork skills, self-discipline, and generally encourage them to strive to be the best they can be, as well as supervise and support other adult volunteers in their team.

• Since its creation, Quilombo UK has collected a great amount of information, evidence and items through projects, fundraisers, events etc.

• We are looking for a team member to find published materials related to Quilombo UK key objectives and interests, especially cultural and racial diversity, and stereotypes in UK communities. The materials include all types of evidence, articles, journals, newspaper columns, local and global news stories. 

• The researcher will help to collect information that can be used as an evidence base to help inform future activities, and also in exhibitions, workshops, and community events. 

• We are looking for a self-starter who can source, collect, and share relevant materials independently. You will also be working closely with our Professional Development Programme participants in relevant areas such as Marketing and PR.

• Provide written reports as and when required. To undertake additional duties as required for the role.

General tasks

• Contribute to staff meetings and other internal meetings with views and suggestions etc.

Essential:

• You will need to have good written skills and be able to explain concepts and projects concisely and accurately. 

• You will be self-starting and willing to research the various projects that we have carried out and catalogue all the evidence collected.

• You will need to have good communication and team-working skills as you will be working closely with Marketing & PR and other members.

The Professional Development Programme with Quilombo UK runs over a period of 16 weeks, is UNPAID and requires a minimum of 12 hours commitment per week across Monday, Wednesday and/or Friday.

Upon successful application, our HR team will contact you to arrange an interview. Following a successful interview, we'll initiate the onboarding process by sending you the necessary documents. Once your onboarding and identification documents are received and verified, you'll be invited to a 6-hour HR and System Induction. In this role you will work remotely with our small team of interns and volunteers, and in conjunction with the Ugandan fundraising and communications team.

Candela is a volunteer-run nonprofit. We're growing our funding base in 2026, and this role is about making that happen. Working alongside our directors, you will have the opportunity to:

Sponsorship and funding:

• Identify and approach potential sponsors, starting with companies whose values or sector align with our mission: we teach physics through VR experiences including solar energy and fusion, so there's a natural fit with energy, renewables, and sustainability companies
• Research and apply for relevant grants, particularly in education, STEM access, and social impact
• Help develop and refine our sponsorship packages and pitches for different audiences
• Develop and manage a funding pipeline

Partnerships and relationships:

• Develop relationships with companies who could support us through funding, equipment donations, or employee volunteering
• Explore partnerships with organisations in the energy and sustainability sector who may have CSR budgets or outreach programmes aligned with what we do

• Strong written communication since you'll be drafting proposals, emails, and applications
• Someone who can commit roughly 3–7 hours per week, with flexibility around your schedule
• Passion for education, equity in STEM, or making technology accessible to young people

Nice to have: a background in energy, renewables, or sustainability, but this isn't essential. What matters most is your ability to build relationships and secure support.

Our Volunteer Community Pet Speakers play a vital role in educating and inspiring communities by sharing important pet care messaging with diverse audiences, tailoring their approach to their own strengths and interests.

By supporting the Community Programmes team, you will help inform and educate pet owners in key areas through workshops, community events, and outreach activities.

What will I be doing:

• Shadowing staff to train in school workshop delivery and / or leading stands at community events, across our key areas of Peterborough & Fenland.
• Once trained, delivering pet welfare and dog safety sessions to primary age children in schools, youth clubs and to uniform groups.

To keep everyone safe and ensure the best support for pet owners, we ask our Community Pet Speakers to follow these guidelines:

• When in a school environment ensure you follow the schools and Woodgreen’s safeguarding policy. This includes making sure you are never alone with a student and a member of school staff is always present during sessions.
• If you’re performing a task for Woodgreen in the community alone, always have a designated point of contact, as outlined in our lone working policy. Your safety is our priority!
• Until your training record is fully signed off, we ask that you don’t give direct advice. Instead, you can help by guiding pet owners to the right support services or making a referral to an education or outreach Officer who can assist them. This ensures pet owners get the best possible help.
• An enhanced DBS check is required for this role.

A full induction will be provided for this role which will need to be completed prior to commencing volunteering.  If driving to schools/appointments you will be expected to comply with driving licence checks and the Charity’s Driver and Vehicle policy.

Will my expenses be paid?

If a volunteer had business insurance on their personal vehicle, we can cover fuel costs.

our membership community. Membership is not a mailing list. It is a collective of people choosing to belong, contribute, and build together.

Experience Qualification and Requirements

Essential 

• Ability to commit grassroots full-time effort during the build phase (rest follows completion, not the clock)
• Comfort working unpaid while foundational systems and culture are established
• Deep alignment with community-led, anti-capitalist values and collective ownership
• High levels of consistency, focus, and self-direction in ambiguous, early-stage environments
• Clear understanding that meaningful change requires discipline, structure, and follow-through, not aesthetics or hype
• Commitment to always working through organisational values: Each One Teach One, Love As Law, Knowledge of Self
• Prior experience in one or more of the following: community building or stewardship, membership programmes or participation models , customer, supporter, or community experience roles, systems thinking and organisational design, digital platforms, CRMs, or data-informed engagement, purpose-driven, grassroots, or movement-led organisations
• Ability to balance strategic thinking with practical implementation
• Strong relational skills, including listening, facilitation, and respectful boundary-setting
• Comfort holding complexity, conflict, and accountability with care
• Willingness to be both architect and steward of culture
• Integrity, clarity, and long-term commitment

Main Responsibilities/ Key Duties

Membership Strategy & Structure

• Design and implement the CIC’s founding membership model, defining clear entry points, engagement pathways, and retention approaches rooted in participation rather than extraction.
• Shape intentional progression routes that support members to move from supporter → contributor → leader, ensuring growth in responsibility, agency, and influence over time.
• Align membership pathways with donor journeys, ambassador programmes, and volunteering routes, ensuring coherence across engagement, fundraising, and advocacy without conflating value with money.

Community Building

• Create a membership culture where people consistently feel seen, informed, included, and valued, regardless of role, status, or capacity.
• Establish sustainable rhythms of communication, updates, shared learning, and reflection that foster belonging, trust, and transparency.
• Enable decentralised participation by supporting member-led initiatives, peer leadership, and collective decision-making rather than top-down control.
• Act as a steward of healthy community dynamics, encouraging dialogue, accountability, and mutual care.

Systems & Data

• Oversee the setup and ongoing use of membership systems (e.g. CiviCRM or equivalent), ensuring they serve people rather than manage them.
• Track and interpret membership growth, engagement, and retention, using insight to strengthen participation and address disengagement early.
• Work collaboratively with Digital, Finance, and Social teams to maintain clean, accurate data and ensure ethical, transparent, and values-aligned data use.

Values & Culture

• Protect the integrity of the membership community by upholding CIC values in all structures, communications, and decisions.
• Identify and address misalignment early, clearly, and respectfully, prioritising restoration and learning over exclusion.
• Co-create and uphold community standards rooted in care, accountability, and shared responsibility—not surveillance or control.

Founding Responsibility

• Help design the future paid Membership Department, including roles, systems, and workflows that reflect collectivism and sustainability.
• Contribute to long-term organisational planning, ensuring membership is a pillar of resilience and shared ownership.
• Act as a culture carrier, modelling commitment, discipline, and collective leadership throughout the build phase.
