We are seeking an inspiring Chair of the Board of Trustees to guide our mission, champion our values, and help us drive meaningful, long‑term change across the Wirral and beyond.

YMCA Wirral sits at the heart of the community, providing life‑changing accommodation, support, and opportunities for young people and adults. We work with individuals facing homelessness, trauma, disadvantage, and exclusion, helping them rebuild stability, confidence, and hope.

The Role

As Chair of the Board of Trustees, you will be the strategic leader who ensures YMCA Wirral remains strong, accountable, and ambitious. You will guide the Board, support the Chief Executive, and help shape the organisation’s next chapter including governance development, community influence, and long‑term sustainability.

Your leadership will help ensure that the voices of residents, staff, and the wider community are heard, valued, and embedded in everything we do.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead strategic direction champion social mobility, inclusion, and trauma‑informed practice across all areas of the organisation.
• Strengthen governance ensure the Board operates effectively, transparently, and in line with regulatory expectations.
• Support senior leadership provide guidance, challenge, and mentorship to the Chief Executive and senior team.
• Build partnerships nurture relationships with funders, commissioners, community partners, and stakeholders.
• Champion opportunity drive initiatives that open pathways to housing stability, wellbeing, education, and employment.

We particularly welcome candidates with lived experience of the issues our communities face, or those who bring diverse perspectives to our Board.

Commitment and Benefits

This is a voluntary position requiring attendance at 6-12 Board meetings per year, each lasting around 1–2 hours, plus occasional additional involvement for strategic or ceremonial duties.

The Greater Manchester Women’s Support Alliance is seeking new trustees to join our Board, including a Chair and Treasurer.

The Alliance brings together organisations across Greater Manchester that provide specialist support to women facing issues such as domestic abuse, homelessness, mental health challenges, substance use and social exclusion. By working collaboratively, we strengthen services, share expertise and ensure that women’s voices are represented in policy and commissioning.

We are looking for individuals who share our commitment to improving outcomes for women and who are interested in contributing to the strategic leadership and governance of the Alliance.

We welcome applications from people with a range of backgrounds and experience. In particular, we are interested in hearing from individuals with experience in areas such as:

• financial management or accounting (particularly for the Treasurer role)
• leadership or governance
• partnerships, policy or public sector collaboration
• the voluntary or women’s sector.

Previous trustee experience is not required, and we welcome applications from people who are new to board roles.

Time commitment: approximately four board meetings per year, plus preparation.

These are voluntary trustee roles, although reasonable expenses may be reimbursed.

As a community engagement volunteer you and your fellow branch members will create a range of activities to help spread the word about SSAFA within your community to ensure that that our Armed Forces community know that SSAFA are here to help and that we need the public’s support to continue offering our services.

This role is diverse and allows for you to focus on the areas that you have skills or interests in. The role has flexibility and can work around your other commitments.

Below are some examples of possible activities you can take on or be a part of as a SSAFA Community Engagement Volunteer.

What you will be doing

• Activity Organisers - Love planning? Help coordinate amazing events like charity dinners, carol concerts, and local fairs.
• Event Champions - Be the friendly face of SSAFA! Help at events, chat with visitors, sell merchandise, and spread the word about our work.
• Promoting SSAFA Services - Help provide a warm, welcoming presence at Veterans Breakfast clubs, cafes or hubs - offering information about SSAFA services and signposting as appropriate.
• SSAFA Storytellers -Deliver engaging talks to organisations and groups, sharing SSAFA’s incredible history and mission.
• Community Connectors - Collaborating with the Community Engagement Manager to establish a local network, promote SSAFA's services, and respond to community opportunities such as gardening projects.
• Fundraising Heroes - Whether it’s rallying local businesses, organising events, or getting creative with unique fundraising ideas, you’ll play a crucial role in keeping SSAFA’s support going strong.
• Administrators - Are you detail-oriented and love keeping things organised? Assist with branch and event administration, manage schedules and branch calendars, and ensure everything runs smoothly currently being undertaken.

The skills you need

• Be friendly and approachable.
• Confident to engage with the public, potential clients, volunteers and SSAFA colleagues face-to-face.
• Reliable attitude, staying connected with your Branch and/or Community Engagement Manager about your availability.
• Access to public transport or a car to get to events if necessary.
• Basic IT skills would be an advantage.
