Photographer / Filmmaker - VOLUNTEER ROLE
Help us bring SUNSHINE to life through powerful images, film clips, and human stories
London is one of the most electric, fast-paced cities on Earth. Yet beneath the energy, a quiet crisis is unfolding.
Across the city, thousands of adults experience chronic loneliness and isolation every single day.
SUNSHINE exists to change that — boldly, joyfully, and unapologetically.
We bring positivity, warmth, and human connection into the lives of people who need it most.
To raise our profile, tell our story, and reach those who feel alone, we need powerful visuals. And that’s where you come in.
We’re looking for Photographer / Filmmaker Volunteers to help us capture the heart of SUNSHINE — our people, our programmes, our impact, and the lived experiences of those facing loneliness.
What You’ll Do
1. Capture SUNSHINE Across London
Head out into the city — parks, streets, markets, neighbourhoods — to capture photos and film clips of loneliness or positive human connection that reflect London’s diversity, energy, and humanity.
2. Document Our Activities
Attend SUNSHINE Programmes and events to photograph or film real moments of connection, joy, courage, and community.
3. Build Our Visual Library
Create a unique, high-quality collection of images and short video clips that we can use across our website, publicity materials, social media, and fundraising campaigns.
4. Tell Human Stories
Help us visually communicate the reality of loneliness — and the hope, positivity, and transformation that SUNSHINE brings.
5. Support Our Digital Presence
Work with our marketing volunteers to produce short clips, reels, TikToks, and social-ready visuals that raise our profile and inspire people to join us.
Who We Need
1. A Visual Storyteller
You see emotion, humanity, and narrative through a lens — and you know how to capture it.
2. Creative & Curious
You enjoy exploring London, finding interesting moments, and experimenting with angles, light, and movement.
3. Reliable & Independent
You’re comfortable working solo, planning your shoots, and delivering high-quality content consistently.
4. Empathetic & Purpose-Driven
You believe visuals can change hearts, shift stigma, and help lonely people feel seen and supported.
5. Tech-Friendly
Whether you use a DSLR, mirrorless camera, or smartphone, you know how to capture strong images or clips and edit them into something beautiful.
Why Volunteer With SUNSHINE?
1. Creative Freedom
No corporate restrictions. You can experiment, explore, and create bold, bright, human-centred visuals.
2. Portfolio-Ready Work
Your photos and videos will be used across a fast-growing London charity — a powerful addition to any creative portfolio.
3. Real Human Impact
Your visuals will help isolated individuals discover SUNSHINE, feel safe enough to join us, and take their first step out of loneliness.
4. Supportive Team
You’ll collaborate with our Founder and creative volunteers who value your talent and vision.
5. Pure Joy
You’ll capture floating bubbles, warm smiles, shared laughter, and moments of connection that genuinely change lives.

China Plate are looking for new Trustees to join our friendly and dynamic Board. If you are interested in the ways arts and culture can have a positive impact on the world, we’d love to hear from you.
China Plate is an arts charity based in Birmingham and working across the West Midlands, the UK and internationally. We’re producers: we work with people to make creative projects happen. Our projects include theatre shows, training programmes, audio anthologies, short films and bus stop galleries.
Our artistic programme is underpinned by our four core values: creativity, optimism, integrity and inclusivity. We’re now looking for new Trustees who share these values and who, like us, are interested in bringing communities together to produce creative projects that fire the imagination, make positive change and are open to all.
Our Trustees meet four times a year to discuss the company’s strategy and progress, and to ensure we are meeting all our legal requirements. These Board meetings are hybrid: you can join us online or in our Birmingham office.
Trustees are not paid: they are volunteers who give their time to support charities. However, at China Plate we can cover costs like travel expenses for meetings and events. If Trustees have access requirements – for example if you require BSL interpretation, captioning, or information provided in particular formats – we will also put these into place.
You do not need to have been part of a Board before to join. You could be based in the West Midlands or elsewhere in the UK. We are looking to recruit new Trustees from either inside or outside the arts sector, including those who may not yet be familiar with our work. We’re interested in hearing from anyone who shares our values, is excited by what we’re doing and is keen to support, question and challenge us.
We would particularly like to recruit one Trustee who is a young person (18-30) who has previously taken part in one of China Plate’s Training & Development programmes – such as The Optimists, Young Producers, or our internships and placements.
Deadline to apply is 12pm (midday) on Wednesday 30th September 2026.
If you’d like to find out more, please visit our website to download the Trustee Recruitment pack.
If you’d like to have a conversation about the role prior to applying, please email our Executive Director Chloe.
