The ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Service
Our ESOL provision is part of the Centre’s Employment and Learning Service, which also includes digital inclusion and employment support.
We have qualified volunteer ESOL teachers providing 1:1 support to clients who want to improve their English. We also have a couple of volunteers running small conversation classes at the Centre, within our Family Services.
We are expanding our ESOL offer to include learning opportunities offsite in a group setting to adults and young people in temporary accommodation, mainly asylum-seeking families.
What will you be doing?
- Conversational English with a small group
- Find out from your students what areas they want to cover and what skills they want to develop
- Encourage a positive atmosphere where students feel they can make mistakes
- The aim of the groups is to help our clients to become more independent and to pursue their social and professional goals.
- Be aware of the variety of levels within the class, providing support for weaker students and challenge for stronger ones
- Give students encouragement and constructive feedback
- To liaise with the manager of Family Services and communicate any issues that arise with the class
How does this role make a difference?
This support provided by volunteers to our clients really helps them progress with their English. Often clients do not have opportunities to learn English or interact with an English speaking person, so this opportunity is invaluable to them. Improving our clients English also enables individuals to access our other services such as welfare rights and Immigration advice services, digital inclusion, which will in turn, improve their employment prospects and assist in integration in their local community.
Who will you be helping?
Our clients are refugees, migrants and asylum seekers who are unable to afford or access English classes at colleges. We have many clients at the Centre who need support with their English.
What are we looking for?
- Experience in teaching English as a second language to adults in a group setting and to mixed abilities and a range of languages.
- A recognised ESOL/EFL teaching qualification such as CELTA.
- Good communication and organisational skills.
- An awareness of some of the issues that affect refugees, asylum seekers and migrants.
- A commitment to upholding the Centre’s values of valuing each person, welcoming, encouraging potential, working together, reflecting and improving.
Time Commitment:
The class will run in term times, on Wednesdays from 25th February 2026, from 10.30am – 12/12.30pm. We ask for a commitment to run this 90 – 120-minute class for at least two terms ideally.

Description
Youth Advantage UK (YAUK) is seeking a Volunteer Senior Researcher. The successful candidates will be allocated to lead one of our teams that either conducts, supports or progresses our short term or long term research projects. They should have excellent writing and speaking skills, IT literacy, and the ability to work well independently and in a team.
Responsibilities:

To lead a small team of volunteers in conducting research or developing research

To provide oversight of a number of tasks at once while providing support on specific issues as they arise

• Requirements:
• Experience of leading a small team in a charity or research or policy setting
• Knowledge of issues affecting children and young people in the UK.
• Knowledge of a range of research methods
• Experience of writing or contributing to research or briefings and other policy documents.
• Excellent writing and speaking skills.
• IT literacy, including proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
• Ability to work well independently and in a team.
• Strong attention to detail and organisational skills.
• Ability to prioritise tasks and manage time effectively.

We’re part of the Royal Air Force Air Cadets, a national youth organisation empowering 12- to 20-year-olds through flying, adventure training, sports, and leadership development.
West Mercian Wing supports over 900 cadets across 27 squadrons in Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Shropshire, the Black Country, and Cyprus. Each squadron is supported by a committee of trustees who oversee governance, fundraising, and community engagement, helping ensure incredible opportunities for young people.
What’s involved
Being a trustee is a simple but highly impactful way to support your local squadron:
- Attend quarterly meetings (around two hours each)
- Discuss finances, fundraising, priorities, and squadron activities
- Take part in decisions, especially financial and strategic matters
- Support events, networking, or community initiatives
Typical commitment: 8-12 hours per year.
Who we’re looking for
Trustees come from all walks of life. No military, youth work, or charity experience is required. Trustees actively participate in meetings and decisions – there’s no obligation to take on an elected role.
Eligibility:
- Must be 20 years or older.
- Must have lived in the UK for 3 or more years.
Useful skills (optional but welcomed):
- Finance, budgeting, or business management
- Fundraising or grant writing
- Event planning or project management
- Governance, committee, or leadership experience
- Local networks or community connections
We particularly welcome:
- Applicants from under-represented communities.
- Younger adults. Only 1% of trustees in the UK are under 30 (Charity Commission and Pro Bono Economics 2025), and we particularly encourage applications from people wanting to grow their skills while making a real impact.
