Job description

Join the Board of Trustees at Orpheus

Make a lasting difference to the lives of young disabled adults

At the Orpheus Centre, our mission is to inspire and empower young disabled people to live fulfilling, independent lives through personal development and the arts. We are a vibrant and ambitious charity built on our core values of being Joyful, Bold, Inclusive, Resilient and Determined. We are now seeking a number of dedicated and experienced individuals to join our Board of Trustees and help guide the future direction of our organisation.

As a trustee, you will play a vital role in the governance and strategic leadership of Orpheus. Working alongside fellow Board members and the executive team, you will help ensure the charity remains financially sustainable, well governed and focused on delivering the very best outcomes for the young people we support. Trustees contribute to strategic planning, risk management, policy development and organisational oversight, while acting in the best interests of the charity and its beneficiaries.

Current Trustee Opportunities

Finance Trustee

As a Finance Trustee, you will provide strategic oversight of the Orpheus Centre's financial sustainability and governance. Working closely with the Chair of Trustees, Finance and HR Committee, Chief Executive and senior leaders, you will help monitor financial performance, assess risks, review budgets and financial controls, and contribute to the long-term financial planning of the charity. Your expertise will support the Board in ensuring resources are used effectively to further Orpheus' charitable objectives, while providing constructive challenge and assurance around financial management, compliance and performance.

Arts Trustee

A strong background in the arts and creative industries, whether in theatre, music, dance, visual arts, digital content, creative production or arts education, will bring valuable insight, strategic thinking and sector knowledge to the Board. This role will help shape and support the Orpheus Centre's artistic vision, champion inclusion, and promote the transformative power of the arts. Through strategic oversight and guidance, you will help ensure young disabled adults continue to benefit from innovative, high-quality opportunities that build confidence, independence, employability skills and artistic excellence.

Care Trustee

Significant experience within the social care sector, ideally including knowledge of CQC-regulated services, will support the Board in maintaining oversight of the quality, safety and effectiveness of care provision. This role provides strategic guidance on person-centred practice, regulatory compliance and sector developments, helping to ensure the Orpheus Centre continues to deliver exceptional outcomes and meaningful support for the young people it serves.

Housing Trustee

Experience in supported housing, housing management, property development or a related field will provide valuable expertise to the Board. This role will help oversee the Orpheus Centre's housing provision and future development plans, ensuring students have access to safe, appropriate and empowering living environments that promote independence, wellbeing and successful transitions into adult life.

What we're looking for

Across all trustee roles, we are seeking individuals who can demonstrate:

  • A commitment to the Orpheus Centre's mission and values
  • Strategic thinking and sound judgement
  • The ability to contribute effectively at Board level
  • A willingness to challenge constructively and support collaboratively
  • Integrity, fairness and strong interpersonal skills
  • A commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.

Previous trustee experience is welcomed but is not essential. We are particularly interested in applicants who can bring fresh perspectives, relevant professional expertise and a genuine passion for improving opportunities for young disabled adults.

Why join us?

This is an opportunity to use your skills and experience to make a meaningful contribution to a unique charity that transforms lives through education, care, independence and the arts. As a trustee, you will help shape the future of the organisation and ensure that Orpheus continues to thrive for generations to come.

For further information about the specific responsibilities and person specification for each vacancy, please refer to the individual trustee role descriptions.

Additional information

Remuneration

These positions are unremunerated, but reasonable expenses will be covered.

Terms of appointment

Trustees are normally appointed for a three-year period and may be reappointed for up to two further three-year terms.

Time commitment

The time commitment for each trustee role is between 7 and 12 days per annum, including four Board meetings including the AGM (mainly in person), four committee meetings (mainly virtual), one or two awaydays and ad-hoc attendance.

How to apply

If you wish to apply for one of these positions, please supply:

  • A detailed CV setting out your career history, with responsibilities and achievements.
  • A covering letter (maximum two sides) highlighting your suitability for the role applied for and how you meet the person specification. Please note that the covering letter is an important part of your application.
  • Contact details of two professional referees, together with a brief statement of their relationship to you and over what period of time they have known you; referees will not be contacted without your prior consent.
  • Diversity monitoring form - your data will be stored separately from your application and will at no time be connected to you or your application.

If you have any questions or would like to arrange a call to discuss the role, please contact the Orpheus Centre and ask to speak with our Director of People and Governance.

Disability Confident Leader

The Orpheus Centre is proud to be a Disability Confident Leader and is committed to providing an inclusive and accessible recruitment process. As part of the Disability Confident scheme, we offer an interview to disabled applicants who meet the minimum criteria for the role, as set out in the person specification. This does not mean that all disabled applicants will automatically be invited to interview, but it does ensure that disabled applicants who demonstrate that they meet the essential requirements are given the opportunity to show their skills, experience and abilities at interview.

As a Disability Confident Leader, we are:

  • Challenging attitudes towards disability
  • Increasing understanding of disability
  • Removing barriers to disabled people and those with long-term health conditions
  • Ensuring that disabled people have the opportunities to fulfil their potential and realise their aspirations.
