Volunteer roles for the Youth and Children sector

Youth engagement is a core part of our how we function. We have a network of paid Young Associates as well as 2 Young Trustees (under 25 years old). We are now looking to strengthen our Governance with the appointment of another Young Trustee, ideally someone with relevant lived experience and/or has participated in Youth Careers Collective programmes.

Essential criteria

- A commitment to realising Youth Careers Collective’s mission

- Experience of effective, fair and impartial decision-making

- A willingness to devote the necessary time and effort to the duties of effective Trusteeship

Desirable criteria

- Experience of operating at Board or Committee level, either executive or non-executive

- Experience of strategic development and implementation

- Some experience, knowledge and understanding of the charity sector

- Some experience, knowledge and understanding of state schools and colleges

- Experience of income generation, policy, marketing and communication, or digital

We do not expect applicants to have all the above experience, and welcome first-time Trustees and will provide training and support on the role. We also welcome candidates with links to our priority area of west London, those from ethnic minority and black backgrounds, reflecting the diversity of the communities we serve, and from candidates with disabilities.

Sexpression:UK provides high quality, comprehensive relationships and sex education workshops to young people between the ages of 11-18 in schools and youth groups. Over a million children in the UK have no contact whatsoever with one of their parents after separation. This can lead to far-reaching physical and emotional problems, with issues including antisocial behaviour, distress and unhappiness.

We are seeking a committed and strategic Chair of Trustees to lead our excellent Board of Trustees and ensure our Child Contact Centre remains safe, sustainable and child-centred.

Our centre provides a safe, friendly and neutral space where children from separated families can spend time with the non-resident parent and, in some cases, grandparents.

About the Role

The Chair will:

• Lead and develop an effective Board of Trustees
• Ensure safeguarding and child welfare remain paramount
• Provide strategic oversight
• Support and work with the Centre Co-ordinator without micromanaging

We are looking for someone with:

• Strong leadership skills
• Emotional intelligence
• Sound judgement and integrity
• Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
• The ability to handle complaints or reputational issues
• A calm disposition during a possible crisis
• The ability to act as an ambassador for the centre within the local community

Ideally, we feel this role would suit a retired person, possibly with a background in working with children in some capacity or with knowledge of child welfare. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful difference to children and families in our community.

Time Commitment

Board meetings are held quarterly, plus an AGM usually held in July.

There is also an expectation to attend fundraising events and make occasional visits to the centre.

The Chapter Secretary ensures smooth running of the local chapter by managing communication, meetings, and documentation. The Secretary is responsible for organising chapter meetings, prepare agendas, take structured minutes, and upload them to Onedrive, ensuring they are shared with all attendees. In addition the Secretary also help coordinate volunteer socials and support chapter activities.

The Chapter Secretary should have strong organisational and administrative skills, with the ability to coordinate meetings, manage calendars, and keep accurate records. Attention to detail, good communication skills and time management are essential in addition to being reliable, proactive and collaborative.. Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, OneDrive.

We are searching for a enthusiastic volunteer to become the Newcastle chapter's Social Media Officer. The primary role is to ensure the smooth every day running of the social media accounts. This involves responding to messages (even if it’s just sign posting) and replying to comments. They should try to ensure growth of the social media account including Facebook and Instagram with the potential of Twitter. They should make use of the Facebook groups to create an engaging atmosphere for members and chase lead volunteers to ensure they post on the page and group promptly following events. After each event they should make posts following up on it. Finally, they will liaise with photographers and assist with designing and running the website.

The VP's role is to aid the president with all of their responsibilities in overseeing the chapter. VP might help run the chapter and become responsible for some activities. Helping to coordinate their committee to ensure that all of the needs of the charity are met and the law, constitution and handbook are not broken.

This role is important in order to have a smooth running chapter, so that the magic of our visits are at their full potential! We are searching for a enthusiastic and hard working volunteer to support the President in Newcastle!

We are searching for an enthusiastic volunteer to become the Recruitment Officer for our Newcastle branch, this role focuses on encouraging volunteers to join Make a Smile. In terms of member recruitment, they will need to help organise and run training sessions, organise and seek recruitment opportunities such as hosting stalls at Volunteering Fairs, contact through coleges/universities and social media use etc etc. Finally, they will need to encourage trainees to complete the essential training, including hosting intial introduction training sessions and help get volunteers to their first event!
