Help shape the future of the Lichfield Canal. We’re looking for a Construction & Operations Trustee to guide, oversee and champion the construction and operational activity that will bring our restoration plans to life.
As a trustee, you’ll play a key role in turning strategy into practical, safe and achievable delivery. This is an opportunity to use your professional experience for a project with real community value, supporting volunteers and helping the Trust progress one of the region’s most ambitious heritage restorations.
About the role
The Construction & Operations Trustee leads the Trust’s construction and operational activity, ensuring our projects are well‑planned, buildable, safe and aligned with our long‑term restoration strategy. You’ll provide calm, informed oversight of methodology, materials, resources and costings, and guide projects from early scoping through to implementation.
What you’ll be responsible for
Strategy & planning: Develop and implement the Trust’s construction and maintenance strategy, ensuring our work supports the safe, sustainable restoration of the canal route.
Construction leadership: Lead and coordinate construction activities, working closely with volunteer teams to plan, sequence and oversee day‑to‑day operations.
Compliance & safety: Ensure all construction activity complies with current legislation, codes of practice and on‑site health and safety requirements, liaising with the Trust’s Health & Safety Lead as needed.
Plant, tools & equipment: Oversee the procurement, servicing and maintenance of plant and equipment, and ensure volunteers receive appropriate training and guidance.
Forward planning & review: Chair and attend the monthly Construction, Operations, Green & Grounds (COGG) meeting to review progress, address emerging issues and set the rolling forward workplan.
Why this role matters
Our canal restoration relies on strong technical leadership, clear planning and a trustee who can help volunteers deliver safe, high‑quality work. Your expertise will directly influence how quickly and confidently we can progress construction across the route.
