Due to Trustee retirement, Braintree Area Foodbank is looking for a new volunteer Finance Trustee. You will be part of Braintree Area Foodbank's board of Trustees, which provides governance and leadership over a Charity that provided over 12,000 meals last year. Braintree Area Foodbank has grown significantly in recent years, with new, exciting projects on the horizon. The Charity is looking for a candidate from a financial background, with experience of planning, preparing and monitoring budgets with expertise in the preparation of annual accounts. Support is available from a volunteer Treasurer along with additional support and guidance from the Board. If you are looking for a new volunteering role in a fast moving environment that directly supports those in poverty and makes a real difference then this could be the role for you.
Brief outline of Braintree Area Foodbank:
Braintree Area Foodbank started in 2012. We are a part of the Trussell Trust network of food banks and distribute food and other essentials to people in crisis food poverty. We operate over a wide area around Braintree, with distribution centres in Braintree itself, Great Notley, Sible Hedingham, Halstead and Witham, supported by home deliveries where required. We work with a wide range of frontline referral agencies, voluntary and statutory, which are issued with vouchers to enable them to refer clients to the foodbank, having assessed their needs. Clients then visit one of our centres where they are met with light refreshments and a listening ear. Additionally, in order to try to mitigate the underlying cause of the crisis, our centres have information on a wide range of organisations to which clients may be signposted by one our volunteers.
Key duties and responsibilities:
- Review timesheets, run payroll including the maintenance of this system. Set up payments for travel and remuneration. This includes managing the Inland Revenue system and the pension scheme.
- Monitor and manage our online finance management system, including updating our internal cash flow report.
- Provide supporting financial information for grant applications. Including monitoring and maintaining records for related expenditure for grants received for inclusion in donor reports.
- Review Charity savings including the investigation for new or renewable investments, with the completion of paperwork as necessary.
- Prepare and present the annual budget for the Board of Trustees agreement.
- Complete the SOFA, balance sheet and notes for inclusion in the TAR. This will include liasing with Trustees to support a Trustee commentary to sufficiently explain financial data.
- Obtaining the acceptance of the TAR from Trustees and organise and attend meetings with the Independent Examiner.

Trustees will also ensure quality, stability and positive outcomes for both young people and our new charity as we continue our journey.
This is an exciting time for the Charity as we roll out our mentoring programme. Following strategic discussions, we are now looking to reinforce and enrich our Trustee Board to provide support and guidance to our Operational Team to enable them to achieve our ambitious 1 year and 3-year plans, whilst also ensuring robust succession plans in place for the Board.
We are particularly enthusiastic about fostering inclusivity within our Board. About the role

What will you be doing?

This hands-on and highly impactful role involves mentoring and encouraging students to face the challenges of running a business, and the inevitable setbacks this entails, in a safe space to apply their learning to the real world.
What will you be doing?
-Coaching, mentoring, and positively challenging a group of young people running their own business
-Being a supportive and encouraging role model
-Attending regular company meetings within the school environment
-Keeping a group of students on track and supporting them with more complicated tasks ie. Opening a business bank account
Where you will be volunteering
Business volunteers are primarily based within schools/ colleges supporting a group of students. They volunteer closely alongside one or more Centre Leads (usually teaching staff) and sometimes other volunteers.
Time commitment
The programme usually runs over the course of the academic year, with Business Volunteers supporting students in school for a minimum of one hour per week.
Young people have told us how important it is to have regular and consistent face to face support from their volunteer Business Advisors, so we are looking for volunteers who can commit to seeing through at least one full academic year (September-June), and who can attend in-person company meetings on a regular basis within a local school.
The skills you need
-Patient, encouraging and open-minded
-Comfortable in the presence of young people (but no specific experience is necessary)
-Able to commit to attending regular face to face student company meetings within a school
-Able to communicate appropriately with young people
-Open to learning new things, to challenge and in turn be challenged
-Comfortable in the use of basic IT as the role involves using our online platform for Company Programme
(Volunteers do not necessarily need experience of running a business in order to enjoy and make a big impact in this role.)

Keeping young people safe
All Business Volunteers will need to undertake an enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) Check prior to starting in the role as part of our commitment to keep young people safe.
In the vast majority of cases DBS checks which contain information on previous convictions will not disqualify an individual from volunteering, we can discuss this case by case.
All Business Volunteers will also be asked to complete Safeguarding Training online prior to starting the role.
