Volunteer Roles in Berkshire
Trustees (four roles), MyBnk
Unremunerated – c. 12 days per year
Being confident about managing your own money might not sound unusual. But for many young people, it’s a real challenge, and one which holds potentially major risks. Knowing where to go for money advice, and who to trust, is so much more than just good personal admin – it’s a building block of social mobility.
MyBnk is a leading financial education charity, working towards the creation of a financially capable generation across all four nations of the UK. We support young people between the ages of 5 and 25, with a particular focus on those who can’t afford for things to go wrong. Our award-winning programmes are highly effective and well-regarded, and we’ve grown rapidly in recent years, but there’s still much more to do. Today’s young people face a far less predictable job market, with high rents, economic uncertainty, and an increasingly complex financial marketplace. So we want to extend our reach and impact by an order of magnitude in the next few years: and to do that, we want to strengthen our Board with a number of new Trustees.
We have four opportunities to help guide and steer this exciting, high-growth charity into its next phase. Two of this round of appointments will be qualified accountants, ideally with experience in a Big Four firm or corporate environment. Our rapid recent growth – from £1m to £4m turnover in just a few years – has been enabled and underpinned by strong financial controls, and we will also ask these trustees to join our Finance Committee. We also want to appoint two charity specialists – one of whom will have executive experience of working across the regions and nations of the UK, and one with an excellent understanding of the safeguarding requirements of working with young people. Both of these Trustees will also bring a nuanced knowledge of charity governance and strategic planning.
Our Board is an expert and committed group, with a distinctive culture and energy. It’s an open, friendly environment, where your contribution is always respected and valued. MyBnk is dedicated to building an inclusive culture and working environment that promotes a sense of safety and belonging for our staff to feel supported to achieve their potential. We’re striving to be an actively anti-racist organisation, and actively encourage applications from diverse, under-represented and racialised groups, including those with lived experience of the social cause we seek to address.
Closing date: 1 May 2024.

WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP
The Wren Project offers free, one-to-one listening support for people in distress as a result of their autoimmune disease diagnosis. The service we provide would not be possible without the commitment, empathy and support of our volunteers.
Volunteers at the Wren Project provide emotional listening support to people living with autoimmune disease (our Wrens). We offer a safe, non-judgmental space for Wrens to talk about how autoimmune disease is impacting their life, without giving advice or offering solutions. Volunteers hold and hear distress in each session and through regular, ongoing appointments, build rapport with Wrens.
Volunteers do not need to have any knowledge of experience of autoimmune disease. What we look for is warmth and empathy.
We are the only charity in the UK who provide support for all autoimmune diseases. Our vision is to build support and community for all four million people in the UK diagnosed with autoimmune disease.
WHAT VOLUNTEERING FOR US INVOLVES:
Application and training process:
-
Send an application form via our website;
-
Attend an online one-to-one interview to discuss why you want to volunteer with the Wren Project;
-
We assess an applicant’s suitability for the role;
-
If successful, applicants participate in a remote, 4-week training programme focusing on listening skills, holding and hearing distress and living with autoimmune disease;
-
A final one-to-one assessment of readiness before being matched with a Wren.
The role:
-
Join a regular fortnightly shift, whereby you will support two Wrens in two separate, one-to-one sessions of 50 minutes via telephone/video call/online.
-
A self-reflective approach to learning and development supported by staff-led reflective practice sessions. Monthly attendance required for the initial six months.
-
Attend three additional modules of skill-building training in the first 12 months;
-
Access to ongoing support from other volunteers and the Operations team;
-
Opportunities to support the charity in a variety of additional roles.
WHAT WE LOOK FOR IN VOLUNTEERS:
-

Make a lasting impact on future generations and your community, by becoming a governor for your local college.
Peridot Partners have partnered with the Department of Education to revolutionise the education governance sector, by appointing 137 new governors to college boards across England.
Education governors come from all backgrounds and sectors with either professional or lived experience that can help the board to make their decisions. A passion for education and future generations is a must, but you don’t need to have any experience in the education sector to become a governor.
Being an education governor or trustee is a rewarding and fulfilling venture for any of us. You don’t need to be a Chief Executive, a senior leader or even an educationalist to join the ever-growing pool of people who regularly attend board and committee meetings to influence and impact the quality of education delivered by our schools, sixth forms, further education colleges and universities.
As an education governor, you will draw on the professional experience of your working career and your own life experiences to support and challenge the strategic direction of the organisation. You will reflect on the lessons that you have learnt through education, work and life to ask questions and understand how decisions being made on an operational level will and could impact the students and their potential for achievement.
Peridot Partners and the Department of Education are, together, committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and our client expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The successful candidate(s) will be subject to an enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references before any final offer can be made.
Please click 'Apply via website’ to be redirected to the Peridot Partners website, where you can see the available opportunities and register your interest.
