ABOUT THE TRUSTEE ROLE
We are looking for a new Trustee with lived experience of rare disease to join and strengthen our Board as the charity embarks on its Rare Aware NHS strategy.
This is an opportunity for someone who understands the realities of living with a rare condition to shape the future of rare disease training and care within the NHS.
As a Trustee, you will bring your insight, experience and perspective to Board discussions, helping ensure that the experiences of people affected by rare disease are meaningfully considered in our strategy, decision-making and activities.
This role is not about representing every person affected by rare disease. Instead, it is about bringing valuable lived experience alongside the skills, knowledge and expertise of our wider Board.

To be our new Honorary Treasurer, experience in strategic level finance is needed, but you might not have a finance qualification. This would be an exciting role for someone looking for an opportunity to support an organisation diversify their income streams and build on the strong financial foundations already in place. You don’t need to have previous experience as a Trustee as we’ll provide a full induction and training, and we have experienced Trustees on our Board.

Purpose of the Treasurer role
The Honorary Treasurer is a trustee of BSR and the Chair of the Finance and Risk Committee (FRC) and the Audit Committee. They are part of the Remuneration, People and Culture Committee. The Treasurer is also a Director on BSR’s trading subsidiary, BSR Enterprises Ltd.
Members of the Board of Trustees make up the governing body of the society.Trustees are responsible for ensuring BSR remains true to its charitable purpose and objects set out in its governing documents and for meeting BSR’s legal and financial duties as a registered charity. BSR is also a registered company limited by guarantee and therefore all Trustees automatically become company directors registered at Companies House.All trustees share responsibility for monitoring BSR’s finances.
Main responsibilities of the Treasurer
To chair the Finance and Risk Committee, ensuring that BSR operates within the financial guidelines set by the Board, the Society’s governing documents, the Charity Commission and current legislation.
To be part of the Remuneration, People and Culture Committee.
To chair and document the annual Audit Committee following BSR’s annual financial audit
To support the Board of Trustees and SMT in meeting its strategic responsibility for BSR’s financial resources.

Time commitment
At present, the post requires approximately 2 days per quarter, split over a range of duties, including:
Preparing for all Board and FRC meetings- reading meeting packs and sending any queries in advance (variable, but approximately 2-3 hours per quarter)
Meeting with the COO in advance of each committee meeting to ensure the meetings run smoothly and efficiently (60 minutes each quarter)
Attending the Board of Trustees meetings (four times a year- each meeting is 3 hours, either online or in person)
Chairing the Finance and Risk Committee meetings (four times a year- each meeting is 2 hours, held online)
Attending the Remuneration, People and Culture Committee meetings (twice a year- each meeting is 1 hour, held online)
Chairing the Audit Committee (once a year- one hour, held online)
Attending BSR Enterprises Ltd meetings (two a year – each meeting is 30 minutes, held online)
Attending the Annual General Meeting (once a year, held online)
Attend an annual Trustees and SMT away day (once a year, in person)
Trustees may also be asked, from time to time, to:

Induction, training and support
BSR has a finance team who carry all out all day-to-day finance functions and provide quarterly management accounts to the Finance and Risk Committee. The new Treasurer will have support from this team, and from the COO both during their induction period and throughout their term in office. Support is also provided by the CEO and the Chair of Trustees.
A comprehensive induction is provided for all new Trustees, including access to external financial training for members of FRC
We use a values behaviour framework to support all our volunteers to thrive in their role
Specialist financial advice and support is provided by external auditors, investment house fund managers and an investment specialist firm.
The FRC completes an annual review of their performance as a committee, and undertakes further training as required

Treasurer/Finance Lead Trustee
Remuneration: The role of Treasurer is not accompanied by any financial remuneration, although expenses for travel may be claimed

Objective
The Treasurer will oversee the financial matters of the charity in line with good practice and in accordance with the governing document and legal requirements. The Treasurer will ensure that effective financial measures, controls and procedures are put in place, and are appropriate for the charity.
Principal responsibilities
1.1. Oversee and approve budgets, accounts, financial statements and financial reports to the Board of Trustees after discussion with the Head of Finance & Central Services.
1.2. Seek assurance that the financial resources of the organisation meet its present and future needs and are within the charity’s objects
1.3. Instrumental in the development and implementation of appropriate financial, reserves and investment policies

About the role
While financial matters are the responsibility of all trustees, the Treasurer is instrumental in guiding the CEO and the Board with advice, guidance and reassurance on all aspects of the charity’s financial management and reporting and controls.

About You

This is a chance to empower other inspirational women by building their confidence and teaching them new Educational and employment skills in order to achieve their ambitions and goals. What we're looking for:
We need enthusiastic and outgoing volunteers who can cheer as loudly as possible for our runners as they go past our cheer points. Every year thousands of people join Team NSPCC to take on a challenge and raise money to help protect children and prevent abuse. Together with other cheerers, you'll make a huge difference to how our runners feel – helping them to complete a challenge they've spent months preparing for.
What you'll do:
You'll be joining other lively and enthusiastic cheerers at one of our NSPCC cheer points along the route – be ready for cheering, clapping, whooping or even singing. It's a team effort, so you would also help with setting up the cheer point, giving out t-shirts and cheering materials, making sure the area is kept tidy and helping with packing down.
We have several cheer points along the course, with staggered start times. We'll be in touch to arrange with you what time to arrive, where to meet and what to expect. You don't have to be an official cheerer to come along and support team NSPCC. So if you can't make the full-time or to one of our cheer points, we'd still love to see there, just look up the event time and come along.
What you'll get:
Volunteering at our events is a great way to experience the fantastic atmosphere of event days, without the training! The atmosphere at our cheer points is amazing, and we'll provide you with cheering materials and an NSPCC t-shirt so all you have to bring is your enthusiasm.
You'll be accompanied by NSPCC staff to support you and answer any questions you may have. Refreshments will be provided at the cheer points, and travel expenses will be covered up to the value of £5.
Who's right for the role?
You don't need any prior experience, just a sense of fun, team spirit and enthusiasm. It's important that you're able to spend a few hours outside, spending lots of this time cheering and clapping. You'll also need to stand for a few hours so, if you think this would be difficult, we'd advise bringing along a travel chair. If you are a wheelchair user, please let us know and we can help to identify a suitably accessible cheering point for you.
You'll need to feel comfortable if members of the public ask you about your volunteering role and will simply need to direct them to a member of staff if they have any questions about the NSPCC. We need volunteers with a warm and friendly manner, as the NSPCC is 90 per cent funded by public donations so the impression people have of us is incredibly important.
Please be aware that you'll need to make your own way to your cheer point (we will give you directions).
