This is a pivotal role at the heart of our charity, helping to shape our strategic direction and support our mission to drive collaboration between human and animal medicine, for the benefit of both.

About the role:

The Treasurer works alongside fellow trustees and relevant staff to oversee Humanimal Trust’s financial strategy, planning and management. You will provide the Board with clear, comprehensive information to inform decisions, ensure financial systems and controls are sound, and advise on the financial implications of strategic and operational plans.

You’ll bring:

• Professional financial expertise (e.g. accounting and financial management expertise).
• A strong understanding of charity finance and governance, or a willingness to learn.
• The ability to analyse, explain and present financial information clearly to non-specialists.
• Strategic thinking and sound judgement.
• Commitment to the mission and values of Humanimal Trust.

Key responsibilities include:

• Overseeing the preparation of budgets, management accounts, financial statements and cashflow forecasts.
• Ensuring effective financial systems and controls are in place.
• Supporting compliance with relevant legislation and reporting requirements.
• Ensuring the Board understands and fulfils its financial responsibilities.
• Advising on financial risks and opportunities in relation to strategy and operations.
• Overseeing the preparation of the annual accounts and reports for submission to relevant authorities.

Time commitment: Quarterly Board meetings, c.2h per meeting, plus preparation, with some additional input for finance-specific matters.

Preferred background, knowledge and experience: An experienced accounting professional, ideally with knowledge of charity finance

This is a voluntary position, but reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.

Purpose

Our Board of Trustees is responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity. They oversee all aspects of the organisation, working closely with the Group Chief Executive Officer and Executive Leadership Team.

We expect our Board of Trustees to reach sound decisions - this may involve scrutinising Board papers, leading discussions, focusing on key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, or other subjects in which the Trustee has special expertise.

Legal context

Trustees are responsible for the legal stewardship of St Giles Hospice. This involves ensuring that the hospice is compliant with legislation and its own governing documents. They are also responsible for the corporate governance of the organisation and report annually to the Charity Commission and Companies House. We expect all Trustees to be aware of the Charity Governance Code.

Charity Commission guidance states that Trustees must:

•  Ensure that everything they do helps and supports to meet the charity's objectives
•  Comply with the charity's governing documents and law
•  Act in the charity's best interests
•  Manage the charity's resources responsibly
•  Act with reasonable care and skill and take advice where necessary
•  Ensure the charity is compliant with statutory accounting and reporting requirements

The person specification sets out the essential qualifications, experience, skills, knowledge, personal attributes and other requirements, which the post holder requires to perform the role to a satisfactory level. Without these qualities, the applicant cannot be appointed to the post.

Skills and experience

We are seeking to recruit two new trustees to our Board and are specifically looking for candidates with a strong fundraising background and a strong finance or accountancy background. We will not consider applications from individuals who do not have these specific skills.

Key tasks and responsibilities

• The role entails but is not limited to:
•  Ensuring that St Giles complies with all its governing documents, charity law and other legislation or regulations
•  Attending and contributing to Board meetings/sub-committee meetingsRepresenting St Giles at events, conferences and media as and when requiredBringing impartiality to decision making
•  Always acting in the best interests of St Giles and with reasonable care and skill to provide clear strategic direction
•  Proving guiding principles and overall plans for St Giles to progress against the strategic objectives
•  Ensuring the financial stability, probity and sustainability of the organisation in relation to the financial aspects of the charity to safeguard the charity's reputation and valuesAdhering to and complying with the Trustees Code of Conduct (known as the Trustee Charter)
•  Supporting and advising the Executive Leadership Team in your area of expertiseBeing collectively responsible for the governance of the charity with other Board members
•  Overseeing organisational risk registers, ensuring adequate assurance is provided or risk mitigations in place
•  Exercising control over the financial affairs of the hospice and protecting its assets
•  Ensuring the effective and efficient administration of the charity
•  Protecting and managing the property of the charity and ensuring the proper investment of the charity's funds

Across the UK, our 270 local groups play a vital part in supporting people affected by MS. They provide sense of belonging, unity and friendship. And they deliver services and support for their local MS community.

We are looking to recruit an Administration Volunteer for the Stockport and SE Manchester Group. Our Administration Volunteers are the linchpin for our local groups’ activities. They act as the first point of contact and they make sure all relevant information is circulated to other volunteers and members. And they play an important role in keeping our data and details up to date to comply with data protection legislation.

In this role you’ll develop your administration and organisation skills. Most importantly you’ll be help your local group run efficiently, so they can keep providing valuable services to our MS community. 

Time Commitment

We estimate this role will need around 2 hours a week. Our roles are flexible and aim to fit around you. Time commitments for this role may vary depending on your activities. This is an ongoing role.

This is a great opportunity to gain experience within a large charity and develop your existing skills and learn new ones. We need you to get involved and help make positive changes to the lives of people affected by MS.

About you

You’ll have an interest in the MS Society and the work that we do, as well as the enthusiasm to represent both us and our values locally. You will understand the needs of people affected by MS in your area and be sympathetic to the needs and motivations of volunteers. You’ll be confident using Microsoft Office, the internet and email. You’ll be able to apply disability, equality and inclusion practices and understand and apply our risk management system. Ideally you’ll understand the local area and organisations that provide local services.

You will be reliable and easy to contact and you need to live in or near the area the group to carry out this role.
