Shelter from the Storm run an emergency night shelter that looks after 24 men and 12 women all year round. The Waking Night Project Worker is a key role in supporting our guests throughout the night.
About the shelter:
The night shelter opens everyday at 6pm and closes each morning at 8am. We provide dorm style accommodation - two rooms which each have 12 mens beds and one room containing 12 womens beds. On site we provide: a home cooked dinner every evening, a counselling service, move-on support, ESOL classes, laundry, showers, clothing, computers, activities, a breakfast each morning and sandwiches to take away. We are a low-needs, low-risk homeless shelter so do not work with people suffering from acute mental health problems or people with active drug or alcohol dependencies.
Job Description:
To be on shift from 9pm until 7am alongside a volunteer to ensure the safe running of Shelter from the Storm. The volunteer position is a ‘sleep in’ role meaning that long parts of the shift will be lone-working. Therefore a satisfactory DBS check is essential.
The WNPW will provide first contact, safeguarding and support to Shelter clients and an essential link to staff working during the day.
The post-holder will be responsible for controlling access to the building, dealing with emergencies, carrying out Health and Safety checks and communicating any concerns or events to the rest of the on-site team and/or on-call staff.
The WNPW will be familiar with SFTS safeguarding policies and guest agreements, demonstrating a non-judgemental attitude and an understanding of the issues faced by a vulnerable client group who may be experiencing complex issues. They will communicate any concerns with staff and make interventions to support a safe environment for clients, volunteers and staff.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Oaklands & St Kilda's is made up of two newly refurbished six-bedroom homes, located close to each other in Ealing, West London. We work with up to 12 young people at a time, providing a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment. Many of the young people joining us are moving on from hospital, stepping down from more intensive placements, or transitioning from Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services to Adult services.
Our team delivers 24-hour trauma-informed and psychologically informed support. You'll play a key role in helping each young person shape their own support and service experience. Everyone receives a bespoke welcome pack and is encouraged to personalise their living space, helping them feel at home from day one.
We place a strong emphasis on participation and co-production. Young people are encouraged to make decisions about their care, engage in partnership meetings, and take part in activities that build skills and confidence - whether that's cooking, budgeting, managing medication, or accessing education and work opportunities.
Support workers will manage a number of young people to help them to identify, plan and achieve their goals, develop relationships meaningful to them and achieve greater independence by providing a flexible and individually tailored support package.
This is a Waking Night role working to support young people throughout the night at the service.
What you'll do:
- Building supportive, trusting relationships with young people and creating a positive atmosphere
- Working proactively with other members of the team to handle the service caseload and administrative responsibilities
- Conducting key work sessions as required, that are innovative and engaging in order to achieve Support Plan goals
- Co-producing ongoing assessment and management of risks in collaboration with young people with an attitude of 'positive risk taking'
- Providing support with daily living activities, including practical assistance to support young people to independent living e.g. budgeting, cooking, establishing a night time routine
- Supporting young people to maintain a healthy environment and where appropriate assisting them to clean their accommodation and maintain good personal hygiene
- Assisting in the recording and reporting of customer incidents
- Managing referrals, completing assessments and obtaining and maintaining all relevant paperwork
- Developing productive relationships with partner organisations to improve service outcomes
- Adhering to lone working protocols and maintaining high levels of awareness in relation to the health and safety of yourself and colleagues

Working Hours
Our Young People need care 24/7 so we have fixed rotas, with staff needing to be able to commit to weekends and bank holidays.
For Waking Night support staff; shifts are 11.5 hours from 20:00 - 07:30 or 21:00 - 08:30, on average you will be working 40 hours a week.
There is always the possibility to do overtime if you need a bit extra, this is paid time and half; same as bank holidays.

About the role
As a Children’s Residential Worker, you will directly look after children and young people who have complex emotional and mental health needs due to trauma, loss and other adverse experiences.
You will be required to support children to regulate and understand their emotions. Working within a therapeutic framework, you will develop a direct programme of work aimed at developing authentic relationships with our children and young people (aged 12 – 17 years old on admission to the Children’s Home).

al health rehabilitation units for young people aged 18-25 who may have experienced a mental health-related hospital admission. The aim is to support young people to gain and develop the necessary skills for independent living and to manage transitions from Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services to Adult Mental Health Services.
Together, these services support up to 12 young people at any one time, offering a welcoming, supportive environment on a spot-purchase basis.
The successful candidate will deputise for the Service Manager when required. This includes direct line management, leadership, coaching, and supporting Specialist Support Workers, Support Workers, and Waking Night Support Workers. Responsibilities also involve ensuring compliance with current legislation, contractual requirements, financial regulations, and Look Ahead's Policies and Procedures.
The role of Deputy Manager will involve five 8-hour shifts, Monday to Friday.
All applicants must be legally eligible to work in the UK by the start of employment as Look Ahead are not able to offer sponsorship.
What you'll do:
Support the Service Manager in driving operational activities within your service area, ensuring clear, relevant, and challenging objectives and ongoing performance tracking.
Successfully lead and motivate your team, championing and maintaining a positive local culture within the service.
Build supportive, trusting relationships with young people and create a welcoming and positive atmosphere.
Prioritise the prompt filling of voids and the reduction of arrears and bad debts.
Continuously work to improve staff competence, ensuring proactive ownership of staffing matters, swift resolution of conflicts, and effective management of issues.
Facilitate transparent and effective communication flows between management and frontline teams.
Lead on casework management, ensuring that risk assessments and support plans are regularly updated and dynamic.
Promote partnership working to maximise opportunities and positive outcomes for customers.
Monitor and maintain creative and ambitious plans for customer involvement.
Support the Service Manager to prepare for quality visits, using Look Ahead's local indicators to monitor performance, set targets, and implement action plans to maintain high-quality services aligned with local and national standards, and funder requirements.
Assist the Service Manager in producing and submitting monthly management reports to the Performance team, ensuring data on local KPIs is accurate and current.
Develop and maintain strong internal management relationships with other departments and functions within Look Ahead, ensuring best practice sharing and supporting initiatives for organisational improvement.
