About Us

We are a charity dedicated to ensuring that people most impacted by injustice are leading campaigns that affect their lives, from better housing to fairer treatment of migrants to LGBTQ+ rights. Our mission is to support people to run effective campaigns that challenge injustice. We do this by running campaign training programmes that help people develop the skills, confidence and community to change things that matter to them. In our trainings, we prioritise people from communities directly impacted by injustice. In response to the urgent environmental crisis facing our planet, in 2020, our training programmes will have a particular focus on climate and environmental justice issues.

About the job

We are seeking an Environmental Outreach Coordinator who will help us recruit participants working on environmental justice issues for our training programmes and build relationships with grassroots organisations working toward environmental justice. We recognise that the environmental movement does not always forefront the concerns of those most directly impacted by injustice in this country and globally, such as low-income/working-class people, people of colour, disabled people, LGBTQ+ people and migrants/refugees/asylum seekers.

We are seeking someone who is excited about developing creative strategies for reaching out to campaigners from those communities.

The Environmental Outreach Coordinator will focus on seeking participants for three training programmes:

  • Bootcamp Residential, a six-day residential campaign training programme for new and grassroots activists.

  • Everyday Activism, a community-based training programme for individuals or groups who are interested in campaigning on an issue that impacts them who have done little to no campaigning in the past.

  • Bootcamp International, this work includes cross-border trainer gatherings, peer- to-peer trainer mentoring and working with and supporting training groups around the world who deliver similar activist trainings.

We are using a very broad definition of environmental justice which would include climate justice, renewable energy, clean air/clean water/anti-environmental pollution, food justice/sustainability, access to green space, nature and mental health/well-being, fuel poverty, green jobs, climate migration, sustainable housing, community gardening and sustainable transport. This means the people we are trying to recruit may not identify as environmental activists, so the job requires some creativity in reaching them.

The outreach will include speaking at events and visiting grassroots campaigners across the country, so the role will include some travel. Reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.

Role Purpose

  • Recruiting 70-90 participants for our Everyday Activism training

  • Recruiting 12 UK participants for our Bootcamp residential programme

  • Recruiting 9 international participants for our Bootcamp programme

  • Producing a final report that analyses people’s motivation for campaigning and the obstacles to them getting involved in campaigning

Job responsibilities

  • Researching and compiling a database of environmental activists and campaign groups across the country and internationally

  • Reaching out to activists via phone and email

  • Researching and compiling a calendar of relevant environmental activism events across the country

  • Speaking/sharing information about our programmes at environmental events

  • Meeting with grassroots activist groups across the country

  • Developing outreach materials, including emails, graphics, flyers, social media content and website content related to environmental issues

  • Reaching out to alumni of our training programmes to ask them to help spread the word

  • Promoting Bootcamp via social media

  • Producing a final report that analyses people’s motivation for campaigning and the obstacles to them getting involved in campaigning

  • Developing and maintaining work plans for the role’s recruitment responsibilities

  • Additional tasks as assigned by manager
