You bring your strategic thinking and genuine enthusiasm for policy solutions that can improve young people’s lives. We’ll bring our fantastic team environment, a focus on staff wellbeing, and support for you to develop.
About us

Our vision is that all young people can access free support on their journey into adulthood from community-based advice and counselling services that respect their rights and meet their individual needs.
We:
-
Advocate with and for our members and young people, to influence national policy and funding decisions.
-
Facilitate networking and collaboration across our network, enabling challenges and solutions to be shared.
-
Develop and disseminate evidence, training and guidance to support members to develop their services and advocate for change locally.
-
Through centring young people’s voices, we support them to campaign for transformational change to ensure services and systems fulfil their rights.
In our last staff wellbeing survey:
-
100% of people rated their overall wellbeing levels while at work as 4 or 5/5.
-
100% of people said they believe Youth Access helps them if they are stressed.
-
When asked to describe their relationships with co-workers, responses included “Great! Open, honest and kind”, “Encouraging, supportive, considerate and trustworthy” and “Open, honest, fun and reliable. We are a people focused team”
About the role
As a small organisation, our power lies in our community - over 160 youth organisations around the country, and the thousands of young people that they work with every year. Your role will be to identify strategic opportunities to influence, through empowering and engaging our network, building a strong case for change, and communicating it to the people who can make it happen. You will also play an important leadership role within the organisation, sitting on the Senior Management Team.
This role will be critical in making sure the Youth Access movement is speaking to and working to the needs of young people who are falling through the gaps in other parts of the youth, mental health and justice systems.
About you
We’re looking for a strategic thinker who can also roll up their sleeves and get stuck into turning plans into action. You should have a genuine interest in the issues facing young people and the policy solutions that can improve young lives. You’ll be driven by our progressive values, believing in bold approaches that centre social justice, collaboration with those with lived experience of the issues, and a responsiveness to the ever-changing policy landscape.
You might have experience in policy, community organising, campaigns, or public affairs. This could be your first step into a senior or management role. You might have leadership experience, but maybe from outside the workplace.
You don’t have to meet every single requirement in the job pack. We are more interested in whether you can demonstrate your ability to do the job and pick up relevant knowledge along the way. There will be support and opportunities to learn.
We know that the policy and campaigns field lacks diversity. This is something we’d like to play a part in addressing through this recruitment. Driving equity in services for young people is a core part of our new strategy and essential to achieving our vision. That also means continuing our own journey as an organisation committed to tackling inequalities.

NEF is committed to providing equal opportunities for everyone regardless of their background. We acknowledge that people from certain backgrounds are under-represented in research and policy making and we’re committed to doing what we can to correct this. We are particularly keen to receive applications from black, Asian and minority ethnic people; people with disabilities; people who identify as being LGTBQIA; people who have a mental health condition; and people who identify as working class or have done so in the past. We are also aware that many highly capable prospective candidates nonetheless rule themselves out of work in research and policy because they underestimate their own ability to do the role. With this in mind, we strongly encourage applications from anyone who is prepared to learn and grow on the job and would like to stress that past experience of working in think tanks is not required.
As users of the disability confident scheme, we guarantee to interview all disabled applicants who meet the minimum criteria for the vacancy. We make use of positive action to select between candidates of equal merit as a way to address under-representation in our workforce.
