The Centre for Ageing Better is looking for an experienced, politically astute and ambitious Head of External Affairs to join us on a maternity cover contract.
This is a unique opportunity to lead one of the UK's most influential voices on ageing at a time of significant social, economic and political change. As Head of External Affairs, you will lead our communications, public affairs and campaigning work, helping us secure greater government attention, commitment and action on the opportunities and challenges of our ageing society.
Alongside leading a high-performing team, you will personally drive some of our most strategically important influencing priorities. Working closely with senior leaders across the organisation, you will lead high-profile programmes of work across our action areas of Work, Homes & Communities and Ageism & Inequality, helping to ensure that government, parliamentarians, local leaders and other decision-makers take meaningful action to improve the experience of ageing. We're looking for a Development Manager (or Fundraising Manager)to help grow fundraising income, strengthen supporter relationships and secure investment in our artistic, participation and community programmes.
Working closely with the CEO, trustees, Marketing Manager and colleagues across the organisation, you'll lead our individual giving and donor development activity while helping to grow support from trusts, foundations, corporate partners and major supporters. Whether you're currently working as a Development Officer, Fundraising Officer or Development Executive, or you've built experience in individual giving, corporate fundraising or trusts and foundations fundraising, this role offers the opportunity to broaden your skills and make a significant impact within a supportive and ambitious organisation.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead the growth of individual giving, patron schemes and donor development initiatives.

We're looking for someone who is an excellent relationship-builder, organised, proactive and passionate about connecting people to meaningful causes. Experience in fundraising, development, donor stewardship, philanthropy, corporate partnerships or trusts and foundations work would be valuable, but we're equally interested in people with transferable skills and the drive to learn and grow. We definitely don't expect you will have experience in all areas of fundraising - though it's a bonus if you do!

We’re looking for a Head of Communications who will combine communications expertise and an innovative approach to storytelling to engage hundreds of thousands of Europeans in meaningful action. This role reports to the Campaigns Director and has line management responsibilities.
You’ll work closely with our campaigns team and a social media manager to adapt and enhance campaigns through media, partnerships and content. This role works across multiple channels. You don’t need to be a tactical expert in all of them, but you need to be a strong strategic thinker who can carefully consider the role of each channel and asset. You will be as comfortable setting the strategic direction as you are delivering: pitching a story, briefing a journalist, running influencer outreach.
What you’ll do:
Advise on and support the development of our campaigns by creating and inputting into campaign narratives and communications plans
Work alongside campaigners and social media manager to oversee and/or produce complementary content that builds pressure on the target: reactive posts, video, and assets timed to campaign moments
Liaise with media contacts and external agencies to find appropriate opportunities to amplify our campaigns across European and national media
Build partnerships with influencers, creators, and independent activists to enhance the power and impact of our campaigns
Support the campaigns team to strengthen their storytelling skills and identify compelling storytelling opportunities in their partnerships, such as media hooks
Build and sustain contact with journalists, produce press releases and briefings, keep our media database accurate and current across our priority countries
Oversee and refresh our social media presence, line managing and coaching a social media manager.
Stay close to the news cycle and to what is working on social in order to identify moments that put our campaign in front of the people we need to move
Contribute to defining the success measures for communications, including social media KPIs, and oversee activity to meet them
Advise senior leadership on communications and reputational considerations, including crisis communications approach
Ensure consistency of messaging and tone across all public communications.

Media relations: Securing proactive and impactful media coverage which influenced policy or moved the needle - in other words, which has had an impact beyond raising profile or raising awareness.
Influencer partnerships: Building relationships and impactful collaborations with influencers, content creators or other content partners.
Content creation: Producing social media content which mobilised people to take action.
Audiences: You have experience of engaging new audiences through communications channels, and you are able to use audience insights to influence your approach.
Analysis: You are data-driven and results-oriented, eager to test, learn, and continuously improve your content and communications.
Collaboration: You thrive in collaborative, international teams, eager to learn from colleagues and share your own expertise.
Coaching and training: You can design and deliver practical training that changes how colleagues work, not just how much they know, and you enjoy building capability in others rather than holding it yourself.

About the Role
Our small Fundraising team has benefitted from significant investment in recent years and this maternity cover role will provide vital continuity as EIA develops and expands its network of philanthropic supporters and strategic partners. You will be joining EIA at a pivotal time, working closely with the Head of Fundraising to sustain momentum across philanthropy, support the launch of our giving circle, Nature Network, and help strengthen selected partnership opportunities that contribute to our fundraising ambitions.
The fundraising team at EIA, is responsible for raising income across trusts and statutory funders, as well as raising funds from individuals. The income raised from individuals has increased in recent years and we are investing further in this area so that we can conduct even more investigative and campaigning work to protect our planet.
The role will focus on developing and strengthening relationships with High Net Worth Individuals (HNWIs), inspiring supporters to give generously, and stewarding donors so they feel closely connected to EIA’s work to combat environmental crime and abuse around the world, as well as supporting partnership activity where it aligns with philanthropic giving, cultivation and long-term relationship development.
The Philanthropy and Partnerships Manager (Maternity cover) will lead the day-to-day delivery of EIA’s philanthropy programme during the maternity cover period. This will include tailored stewardship for HNWIs, prospecting and cultivation, donor funding propositions, implementing and growing the Nature Network giving circle following its launch in September, engaging our network of ambassadors, Future Stewards, and maintaining effective systems to support growth in philanthropy. The role will also contribute to a focused partnerships pipeline, ensuring partnership activity supports philanthropic income growth and deepens engagement with EIA’s mission.
