Job Title: Development Manager

Job Summary
The Development Manager will be a dynamic and experienced fundraiser with strong technical skills in grant and funding solicitation, management and stewardship across Crisis Action’s current donor targets including major foundations, governments, and High Net Wealth Individuals (HNWI). They will serve as the anchor of a newly configured fundraising team designed to support Crisis Action to nurture its existing donors and secure the next generation of support for its ground-breaking work.
This role is pivotal in ensuring excellence in our outreach, proposals, reporting and communication to drive resource mobilisation that is essential for the organisation’s financial sustainability at a time when our distinct model and way of working is needed more than ever.
Principal responsibilities
Donor engagement and communications
- Oversee and coordinate day-to-day engagement with current and prospective foundation, government and individual donors by members of the Crisis Action team
- Represent the organisation vis-à-vis donor representatives
- Support HNWI donor benefits structure and cultivation plans
- Prepare compelling and timely donor reports, donor updates, letters of receipt and other outreach materials in collaboration with finance and campaign teams.
Grant management and oversight
- Ensuring timely and skilled drafting, consultation and sign off of high-quality grant proposals
- Timely acknowledgement of all contributions and compliance with donor requirements
- Preparation of high-quality proposal budgets and financial reports for donors in compliance with grant specifications and deadlines, in close cooperation with the Finance Team
- Review all grant agreements and monitor/ensure the organization's adherence to its contractual commitments.
Strategic vision and guidance:
- Provide strategic support to the Chief Executive Officer on short- and long-term fundraising strategies and broader resource mobilisation initiatives to ensure our fundraising strategy and its implementation helps achieve organisational goals
- Set fundraising targets and produce periodic funding forecasts in consultation with members of the team.
Research and intelligence:
- Carry out donor research and provide strategic insights and donor related updates and background information to relevant colleagues.
- Monitor and ensure a solid pipeline of donor prospects
Team coordination and collaboration
- Ensure that there is a clear workplan that anticipates what has to happen when to guide team resource allocation and workload management
- Ensure effective and efficient processes of gathering and sharing information across the team to support timely donor engagement and stewardship with clear protocols on the cadence of team calls and written updates
- Support colleagues to adhere to agreed fundraising roles and responsibilities
Communications
- Ensuring effective and timely communications to donors, Crisis Action’s board and team
- In collaboration with the CEO, ensure timely and regular flow of information to the team on fundraising progress
- Timely production of high-quality fundraising updates for our Board
Data and Systems Management
- Sustain, manage and where possible further develop the relevant administrative infrastructure, including grant tracking and reporting systems, Salesforce contact database, events calendars, contact lists, donor profiles, website and annual report donor acknowledgement lists and meeting minutes
Job Specifications
Essential Skills & Experience
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in fundraising, donor relations, or development within the non-profit or international advocacy sector
- A proven track record of engaging with foundations and government officials to secure and manage grants
- Demonstrated ability to forge new donor partnerships, and a track record of bringing in new revenue
- Strong understanding of government and foundation funding landscapes with at least some familiarity with differences between them and the stewardship of major gifts from individual giving
- Experience in drafting compelling fundraising proposals, reports and donor updates for a variety of donors – foundations, governments and individuals
- Strong all-round communication and storytelling skills
- Experience producing a range of communications materials for different audiences
- Strategic thinker with the ability to translate organisational goals into actionable fundraising plans
- Proficiency in CRM systems (e.g., Salesforce) and grant management tools
- Ability to work collaboratively across teams and cultures with colleagues dispersed across the world
- Financial literacy and a proven ability to understand and construct budgets

Salary & Benefits
Salary: We have set bands for the salary range for all positions at Crisis Action. The baseline of our salary range for this position is £40K per annum.
Benefits: 25 annual leave days (30 days after 3 years). Up to 6% contribution to pension. 3-month long service leave after 6 years and one-month sabbatical leave in year 10. CA additionally offers an annual inflationary increase, and 2% salary increase in year 2, 4 and 8 subject to availability of funds.

Philanthropy and Partnerships fundraising at Alzheimer's Research UK has grown significantly over recent years. The Directorate has a strong track record of soliciting seven-figure donations and winning significant corporate partnerships with well-known and well-loved brands such as Omaze, Cadbury, Warburtons, Roadchef and Dobbies.
We are now building upon this success and have launched a new, significant fundraising campaign. This campaign will help drive further transformational growth, from income across major donors, trusts and foundations, and corporate partners. Ultimately, it will help us fund cutting-edge research that will bring forward the day when we can diagnose, treat and prevent dementia.
As part of Alzheimer’s Research UK’s Leadership Team, and working closely with the senior stakeholders across ARUK, the Head of Philanthropy will lead the organisation’s work with our philanthropy audiences (namely major donors, trusts and foundations). Under the banner of the new campaign, the Head of Philanthropy will define and implement the team’s strategy, ensuring it supports the charity’s vision, mission and strategic objectives.
The Head of Philanthropy will lead a Directorate of approximately 8-10 people and line manage three team members (namely the Philanthropy Executive and two Philanthropy Managers).
The role holder will also personally lead on relationships with a small group of ARUK’s most generous supporters, and prospective supporters, across Philanthropy audiences.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategy, finance and reporting
· Work with the Director of Philanthropy and Partnerships and Partnerships to lead on the strategy for the Philanthropy Team, including leading on the Ops plan, budgeting and strategy for the team.
· Grow Philanthropy income at Alzheimer’s Research UK, in line with agreed targets and expenditure.
· Monitor progress against targets, adjusting as necessary.
· Provide direction, guidance and support across the Philanthropy team.
· Evaluate reporting methods across the team and ensure they facilitate the accurate recording of the Philanthropy team’s fundraising activities.
· Represent the Philanthropy team at Head level internally.
Fundraising
· Manage a small portfolio of key current and prospective donors, building strategic relationships at the very highest level and delivering six and seven-figure gifts.
· Build a network of Senior Volunteers, working with the Director of Philanthropy and Partnerships to ensure the team are maximising the opportunities available through our President, Chair and other senior stakeholders.
· Develop a thorough understanding of ARUK’s projects, policies and activities to enable you to articulate the mission of our work and inspire people to join us.
· Present and pitch to potential supporters and donors, managing high-level meetings where relevant and engaging other appropriate senior representation when needed.
· Ensure high-quality management of existing supporter relationships, making sure supporters find giving to ARUK rewarding and enjoyable.
· Tailor and develop Cases for Support to attract support for the work of ARUK’s projects.
· Manage and attend events and meetings with external representatives and involving the Director of Philanthropy and Partnerships, CEO and other colleagues and volunteers.
· Work with senior and scientific staff, empowering them to build relationships with current and prospective supporters.
· Explore the opportunities for cross-team working, especially, but not limited to the Corporate Fundraising and Celebrity teams.
Line Management and people management
· Inspire, motivate, challenge and support individuals and teams within the Philanthropy team. Promote collaborative working across the team and with other teams across the charity, developing a culture of innovation, openness, accountability and resourcefulness.
· Line manage three members of staff, namely two Philanthropy Managers and the Donor Relations Manager, actively empowering, coaching and supporting them to develop their teams’ operational plans and deliver on key priorities.
· Set clear goals, objectives and KPIs for each team member and provide them with the ongoing guidance and support they need to reach them.
· Role model and actively embed Alzheimer’s Research UK values and behaviours across all activities, and champion the principles of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.
· Provide strong leadership and support to the Philanthropy Team, through coaching, mentoring and developing individuals to enable them to effectively carry out their role. Carry out performance appraisal meetings and effectively promote team building and collaborative working to deliver the strategic and operational plans.
· Ensure all Philanthropy and Partnerships activity is conducted to the highest standards and in line with the strategic priorities, developing consistent and rigorous methods for measuring success and sharing knowledge/outcomes across the team, department, and wider charity.
Communications
· Work closely with the Finance team to ensure all grants are correctly allocated and used, and conditions met
· Liaise and work with the Research team and the Communications team to produce accurate and timely reports and applications
· Stay up to date with ARUK’s research and other news to be able to communicate effectively with supporters, disseminating the charity’s key messages both among the team and to key supporters.
Knowledge, skills and experience needed:
· Demonstrable knowledge and experience of major gift fundraising.
· Thorough understanding of managing a team of fundraisers.
· Experience of developing and implementing fundraising strategies.
· Proven track record in establishing, monitoring and achieving ambitious fundraising targets.
· Experience of managing a Philanthropy team to deliver significant income growth.
· Excellent communicator, with an ability to build relationships and inspire confidence and respect at all levels.

Ways of working: As part of our Agile ways of working you will be required to work approximately 2 days a week from the office, which is subject to the requirements of the role and the business needs. Flexibility on where you work can be split between working from home and our office.

- Develop approaches to grow connected income streams, including regular giving and in-memory giving, through community and digital activity.

5. Supporter experience and stewardship
- Ensure supporters are stewarded with care, empathy and professionalism, recognising the personal connection many have to bipolar.
- Oversee thanking, updating and re-engagement activity to build long-term supporter relationships.

6. Team leadership and organisational contribution
- Line-manage and support the Fundraising Officer and Supporter Engagement Assistant, providing clear direction, coaching and development.

- Oversee income and expenditure for the community and events portfolio, monitoring budgets and performance against targets.
- Contribute to organisational planning, cross-team working and the development of efficient systems and processes.

Essential Criteria
- Significant experience managing community and/or events fundraising, with a track record of achieving income and engagement targets.

The role
The post holder will work alongside our Co-Executive Director, Head of Legal and Legal Administrator in developing and managing Foxglove’s legal work. You will develop and drive forward a significant number and range of cases, including the development of case theories, investigating and collecting evidence, drafting correspondence, evidence and submissions. You will also be responsible for coordinating and managing external legal teams, in multiple jurisdictions. This will require you to have the comfort and ability to navigate diverse settings, while also having the insight to weigh up the benefits and challenges of pursuing cases in different jurisdictions. You will serve as an external representative for Foxglove’s work, writing and speaking on topics of relevance. You will also be a sparring partner for others in the team, bringing a creative mindset and political savviness. UK and international travel are required. Flexibility with working hours will sometimes be needed.
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Case Development and Management
- Build connections, and listen to affected communities, unearth and pursue issues caused by tech injustice, coming up with innovative legal solutions.
- Build and maintain relationships with impacted community members, unions, other lawyers, experts, co-counsel, intervenors, civil society organisations, whistleblowers, and the public.
- Explore and develop new and undiscovered opportunities for Foxglove to be impactful and effective in our work.
- Effectively work with the co-Executive Director and Head of Legal to develop and implement Foxglove’s legal strategy.
- Manage multiple cases at any one time, while also thinking to the future regarding cases that should be explored and developed.

Length and Salary

Our team works remotely, and this role can be based anywhere. We would prefer you to work within or close to UK office hours, but this is flexible. Our team travels every two months for team days and twice a year for team retreats. This role will include significant UK and international travel. Role outline and purpose
The Organising and Local Mobilisation (OLM) Manager is responsible for managing ongoing support to food banks as they organise and campaign for change. This varied, proactive, and fast-paced role will involve working closely with grant funded Local Organisers as part of Trussell’s Organising Programme, frequently visiting food banks and delivering online and in person training.
You will hold responsibility for providing direct support as food banks develop effective campaign strategies – covering local and Trussell priorities – and ensuring they have the capacity, skills, and resources to deliver them. You will also work closely with other departments at Trussell and external partners to support food banks outside of the Organising Programme to influence locally and play a leading role in mobilising them to campaign for change.
This role is part of Trussell’s Supportive Communities programme, the goal of which is to enable local communities to become places where people at risk of needing to use a food bank are supported and are using their agency to bring about meaningful changes that prevent anybody from needing emergency food. · Network area-wide delivery of the Organising Programme: Lead and manage the delivery of OLM’s Organising Programme in your network area, recruiting food banks to join, providing in person and online training and ongoing relational support to Local Organisers to ensure campaign strategies are developed and delivered. Content, Channels & Brand:
- Creative and powerful copywriting skills aligned to the values of the Charity. Adapting copy to suit differing audiences and publications, and including digital, DM, print appeals, email, magazines, brochures, scripts and social media.
- Creation of powerful stewardship content in partnership with fundraising teams.
- Collaboration within the marketing team across branded social channels to drive growth and engagement.
- Collaborate with the Trust Comms team for campaign and content capture in line with Trust Policy.
- Upholding of brand positioning to always agreed deadlines.
Stakeholder Management, Delivery & Operations:
- Manage the production and distribution of marketing materials across external suppliers as required.
- Liaising and networking with a range of internal and external stakeholders including families, donors, our colleagues (including those within the Trust), suppliers (including agencies) and partner organisations.
- Assisting the Marketing & Communications Manager to work within project budgets using appropriate systems and controls.
- Attending and participating in events, team meetings, compulsory training etc.
Other Duties
- Be an outstanding advocate for Alder Hey Children’s Charity in line with the core values of the organisation.
- Be an active and supportive member of the Alder Hey Children’s Charity team, contributing to team development and working collaboratively with colleagues and volunteers.
- Attend and support events run by fundraising teams where required, including occasional out-of-hours working.
- Gain and maintain an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the charity’s work, priorities and future plans.
