Job description

Care4Calais’ Access Team is a vital part of our charity.  Our caseworkers help asylum seekers to navigate the complex UK asylum process.  This is incredibly important; for many refugees being returned home can mean torture, persecution or death.  Our caseworkers find each refugee a solicitor, help with their paperwork and support them through what can be a long and formidable process.  We currently work with 200+ legal firms around the UK, providing an invaluable service to both the asylum-seekers and the overstretched legal immigration teams.

The manager role is a fantastic opportunity for a hard-working and proactive individual with excellent leadership, judgement and problem-solving skills to help us deliver a vital and highly beneficial service to refugees. 

As manager of this specialist team you will lead a team of highly motivated people and use your specialist knowledge and experience to improve outcomes for refugees. The Role  

As a Legal Access Team Manager, you’ll focus on providing outstanding support to your team to enable them to effectively guide clients through the complex asylum process.  You will manage the data produced by this work to optimise the performance of the team and to identify opportunities for advocacy work and to take these forward.

In this busy, hands-on role, you’ll gain a deep understanding of the function of the UK asylum system so we can provide the highest standards of service to those who need us most.  A key focus will be on maintaining accurate and complete records and ensuring high quality service is delivered to every one of our vulnerable clients.

  • Managing the performance of the team to ensure maximum ongoing efficiency and effectiveness
  • Running inductions, ongoing training and keep up to date with resources and procedures to ensure the team can work effectively and efficiently.
  • Supporting caseworkers to perform their roles, including continuous monitoring and evaluation and regular one to one meetings
  • Debriefing volunteers after dealing with complex and sensitive situations
  • Managing differing needs of Legal Access sub teams 
  • Responding to urgent situations in a timely manner
  • Liaising with other professionals and external partners
  • Leading regular team meetings
  • Working closely with the quality assurance manager to ensure a high quality service is supplied to all clients and that risk management procedures are always in place and functioning effectively
  • Following safeguarding procedures and reporting safeguarding incidents appropriately
  • Liaising with other teams within the organisation
  • Regular reporting to CEO and trustees


  • Proven leadership skills and track record of successfully managing and motivating teams of volunteers
  • Ability to ensure that each client receives a high level of service
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to communicate with people who do not have English as their first language, and the ability to present to senor management and trustees
  • Able to work independently, providing regular team updates and potential aising issues as they evolve
  • Proactive problem solver in the face of ever changing asylum policy
  • Organised and accurate with complex information, with an eye for detail
  • Familiarity with the UK asylum system
  • An understanding of the traumatic experiences that our clients have been through and the emotional resilience to cope with this
  • Ability to use spreadsheets, Google Workspace, messaging platforms and secure databases.
