Job description

Purpose of job 

As a key part of the Membership team, you will create persuasive email campaigns that inspire and motivate. Those campaigns will help the party achieve our goals: 

  • Grow the party

  • Improve our diversity

  • Deliver our message

  • Mobilise volunteers

  • Raise money

You will also work closely with our Digital Communications & Campaigns teams. In collaboration with them, you'll help our party's digital content is co-ordinated and effective at achieving those goals. 

You'll become a subject matter expert in email for the party. As a subject matter expert, you'll also advise key stakeholders on how to make the most out of email.

You'll also help design and expand our marketing automation program.

Key Responsibilities 

  1. Implement and improve our email strategy to engage people at all stages of the membership journey.

  2. Plan a content calendar to engage, motivate and mobilise our audience to take action that delivers real change.

  3. Write persuasive, high-quality copy with a unique voice from a range of broadcasters.

  4. Ensure the delivery of high-quality emails by ensuring our QA process is effective.

  5. Develop a pipeline of membership and fundraising prospects that helps to grow the party’s capacity and revenue.

  6. Track performance against our KPIs. Take action to address underperforming campaigns and automations.

  7. Plan a programme of constant testing and innovation to get more from our email program and pass on the insights to other parts of the party.

  8. Develop email best practice and communicate that across the wider organisation, including to regional and local parties.

Person Specification

You will be a talented copywriter, capable of communicating big ideas simply and emotively. You'll have first-rate communication skills. 

You will also be data-conscious, with the ability to use data effectively. Knowledge of key email techniques like A/B testing and audience segmentation would be ideal.

You will have some experience working with HTML and CSS. You will have had some experience working in a similar marketing or fundraising role.

You should be comfortable operating in a fast-paced environment, as politics can often be unpredictable.

You'll have a passionate desire to make the world a better place to live in. You'll be sympathetic to the aims and ideals of the Liberal Democrats.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Experience of writing marketing or fundraising copy. Ideally with some experience writing for email.

  • Strong copywriting and copyediting skills.

  • Good communication time management skills.

  • Excellent attention to detail.

  • Experience managing projects.

  • Sympathy with aims and objectives of the Liberal Democrats

Technical Skills

A candidate will ideally have experience with 1 or more of the following. Not having these skills should not be a barrier to applying, as they can be taught.

  • HTML and CSS.

  • Google Analytics Suite.

  • Experience working with a CRM.

  • Experience working with an email tool (Mailchimp / Iterable / Mailjet etc).

Desirable Skills and Experience 

  1. Knowledge or experience working with Salesforce (or similar CRM platform).

  2. Knowledge or experience working with Iterable (or similar Email Marketing / Marketing Automation tools).

  3. Direct or digital marketing qualification.

  4. Digital or email marketing experience.
