This is an exciting and influential role in The Salvation Army, requiring a broad experience and skill set, along with relationally focused and adaptable approach. It will involve working with a skilled team to engage and support professionals from a variety of fields to influence strategy and practice. You will not only collaborate to ensure the collection and analysis of good quality information but also work to facilitate its accessibility and implementation throughout the movement. You will join the team at a time of transition, helping plan and implement ways of working in R&D that emphasis the movement’s response as a church to the needs of local communities and wider society.

The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting the Director of Research & Development in directing and providing strategic leadership on all research matters to the UKI Territory. The role is a key part of R&D senior management team. R&D seeks to inform, inspire and enable transformational front-line mission. The post-holder will be responsible for significant internal agendas including Ethics, Impact Measurement and develop strategic research university partnerships to promote evidence-based mission. They will be required to manage a significant portfolio of projects and contacts.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:

• An extensive proven track record of utilising strong interpersonal and relational skills to lead a successful research team that supports the development, implementation and evaluation of high impact research initiatives, developing and training staff, and managing performance where required

Carers Centre Tower Hamlets (CCTH) is a small, committed organisation dedicated to supporting unpaid carers through a variety of specialist services, from social and therapeutic activities to emotional, mentoring, advocacy, and signposting support. We aim to enrich and empower unpaid carers’ lives, providing them with the support they so selflessly give to others. We are now recruiting to our team someone who will lead on our work to support Carers as part of the Barnsley Street Mental Health Project. 

Project Overview:  

The Barnsley Street Project is a Community Mental Health Pilot aimed at delivering continuous, person-centred mental health care to underserved populations in PCN1 (Bethnal Green). This initiative is a collaborative effort between East London Foundation Trust (ELFT), Tower Hamlets Mental Health Alliance (THMHA), and the Look Ahead Housing Association. Driven by the voice of lived experience, the project is designed to address the systemic gaps in mental health services, particularly for marginalised communities.  

Purpose of the role:  

To identify and coordinate an effective support service for unpaid carers who support residents who access the Barnsley Street Project, with the aim of supporting carers to have their needs met as well as develop a healthy and sustainable caring role.    

To facilitate access for unpaid carers in the Barnsley Street Project to appropriate support services, both statutory and voluntary. To provide comprehensive support and information to families and carers. To raise awareness of carers’ needs with professionals in the project environment and contribute to carer friendly policies.   

The post will involve the direct provision of services, referral to and between services, collaborative work with other local agencies and outreach work. The post-holder will provide advocacy, referral, and ongoing practical and emotional support to unpaid carers through individual and group work.    

Responsibilities: 

• Identification and Support: Proactively identify carers of residents who utilise the Barnsley Street Project, and provide them with tailored support, ensuring their well-being is prioritised. 

• Information and Guidance: Offer information about available resources, support services, and community networks to assist carers effectively. 

• Communication Liaison: Facilitate communication between clinical staff and carers, ensuring they are kept informed about the patient's condition, treatment plan, and any discharge process. 

• Emotional Support: Provide compassionate emotional support to carers, listening to their concerns and offering a caring presence during difficult times. 

• Training and Education: Organise workshops and peer support groups to equip carers with essential skills for their caregiving role. 

• Advocacy: Advocate for carers' needs and rights within the setting, ensuring their voices are heard and respected. 

Requirements: 

• Previous experience in an advice or support role within a mental health or healthcare environment is preferred. 

• Empathetic and compassionate nature, with a genuine commitment to supporting carers during challenging times. 

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with carers, hospital staff, and external partners. 

• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, managing priorities efficiently.

Role description

As our philanthropy coordinator, you will play a key role in building new partnerships with philanthropists and high-net-worth individuals, with an immediate focus on the UK, US, and Europe. You will design and implement a comprehensive strategy to build a robust portfolio of individual donors, Family Foundations, Donor Advised Funds (DAFs) and other personal giving vehicles.

Together with our director of development, you will drive forward a multi-year fundraising strategy to resource our work with activists and organisations on the frontlines of human rights, social justice, and environmental action. 

Your primary responsibilities will include: 

• Designing and executing our philanthropy fundraising strategy. Lead a strategy to identify, cultivate, and solicit high-net-worth individuals (HNWI) —including through Donor Advised Funds, Family Offices, Family Foundations, and other giving vehicles—with an immediate focus on the US, UK and Europe. 

• Prospecting and donor acquisition. Manage HNWI prospecting, generate new leads, develop solicitation plans, brief senior leadership in advance of meetings, and coordinate cultivation and networking opportunities.

• Stewardship and relationship management. Build strong relationships with existing and potential donors through tailored stewardship plans designed to grow income over time. Manage donor tracking and communication systems. 

• Nurture and grow our development board - Work alongside our director of development and CEO to identify and engage members and steward the Board through a 12-month action-orientated development campaign. 

• Budget Management. Manage a programme budget for cultivation and stewardship events and activities.

• Collaboration and Communication. Person specification 

Essential 

• You will have extensive experience managing a HNWI or major gift portfolio. 

• You will have a proven track-record of personally securing four, five, or six-figure donations from HNWI and/or major gift donors in the UK, US and/or Europe. 

• You will have experience working within a nonprofit focused on human rights, social justice, and/or environmental action. 

• You will have excellent verbal communication skills, including English language skills, both spoken and written. 

• You will have experience working with senior stakeholders and board members to support fundraising activities.

Terms and remuneration

This is a remote, home-working role. You will be contracted for 40 hours a week on a full-time, fixed-term contract. Flexible working is available and encouraged.

Introduction

Working within the Central Secretariat, the Safeguarding Structures Programme Director will lead a programme team to implement the new independent structures for the Church of England's safeguarding function.

About the Department

The Central Secretariat provides support to many of the governance bodies of the Church of England, including the General Synod, House of Bishops, Archbishops' Council and others. It also provides policy analysis and support on internal matters relating to the structure and governance of the Church of England.

What you'll be doing

The purpose of this role is to deliver the General Synod's motion of February 2025 to design, develop and deliver independent scrutiny of Church safeguarding and such operations as the Synod decides. It needs to do so in a way that brings stakeholders - victims and survivors, safeguarding staff across the Church, trustees and others - along with them, with a focus on delivering a system of safeguarding that commands greater confidence. And it needs to do so working through an executive chair and lead bishop.

You will lead a programme team that is in the process of being formed, and you'll report to the Director of the Central Secretariat, whilst also working through an Executive Chair (currently being recruited), the lead bishop for safeguarding and a Programme Board, and maintaining the confidence of the wider Church of England, including the General Synod, the House of Bishops and others.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the programme team to deliver an ambitious programme of policy development, legislation, restructure and new service development, being accountable for ensuring the programme meets objectives , delivers outcomes and realises benefits
• Support the Executive Chair and lead bishop to deliver the mandate of General Synod (February 2025) regarding the future of Church of England safeguarding - maintaining their confidence and engagement at all times, building a relationship of trust and collaboration.
• Lead the team to deliver the change:
• Design the change - agreeing the new models for scrutiny/complaints and operations
• Secure buy-in to the change - including from governance bodies, the General Synod, and other stakeholders
• Execute the change through a mixture of legislative, contractual and other arrangements; and
• Embed the change - through the communications, engagement, planning etc that will enable the programme to deliver the benefits
• Maintain excellent programme governance - both ensuring the programme is well-run, with appropriate internal governance (plans, resource management, risk management) and reports effectively to the Programme Board, and to governance bodies
• Develop excellent engagement with safeguarding staff and leaders across the Church
• Ensure that the proposals are designed from the user perspective - with a particular focus on victims, survivors and parish safeguarding officers
• Lead, support, encourage and manage, the programme team of approximately 6-8 people
• Develop key messaging and strategic engagement , overseeing internal and external engagement
• Equip and enable the lead bishop and Executive Chair to be effective senior sponsors and externally facing change champions, ensuring that they are fully briefed on all developments and properly supported prepared for their meetings.

About You

Along with a recognised Programme Management accreditation (e.g. APM, PMI, PRINCE2 or equivalent), you will also need to demonstrate:

• The ability to create the vision and a sense of the destination, and also to engage in the precise details of what needs to happen to deliver it;
• A track record of engaging with people who are impacted by substantial change;
• Ability and experience of working collaboratively with a programme team and wider stakeholders to achieve success
• Experience of working with senior stakeholders to deliver, and capacity to work with an Executive Chair and lead bishop or similar.

• A salary of 82,157 per annum, plus age-related pension contributions between 8-15% of salary. We will also match any salary-sacrifice pension contributions you make up to an additional 3% of your salary.
