The Development Manager will play a pivotal role in deepening the connections between the school and our alumni and parent community to inspire financial support. We are entering the early stages of a new major philanthropic campaign, which will significantly scale the ambition for the school’s fundraising and engagement activity. This is a fundraising position which involves leading on our operational effectiveness and developing effective communication techniques to help deliver the school’s philanthropic objectives. You will be required to assist the Director of Development in managing an effective portfolio of fundraising streams, securing regular giving donations, whilst also stewarding our donors effectively, creating innovative and compelling ways to demonstrate the impact of their philanthropic support.

Person Specification

The ideal candidate will need to:

• Be able to demonstrate a track record of securing, administering, and stewarding gifts at any level, or experience in leading income generation activity through regular giving programmes within the charitable sector.
• Maintain positive working relationships with all constituents in the King’s community, including alumni, parents, and pupils to encourage lifelong engagement through participation, advocacy, and support.
• Be a great problem solver with the ability to work laterally to identify opportunities and provide solutions to fundraising challenges.
• Assist the Director of Development in prioritising prospects, through a thorough research strategy, leading the regular giving activity and helping to implement the development fundraising strategy to support the school’s vision and bursary ambitions.
• Demonstrate self-awareness and understand how to bring others with them to collectively make a contribution to our wider social aims.
• Work systematically and maintain the strong support ecosystem that is in place, including the identification, research, and management of supporters, donor stewardship and acknowledgement, gift administration and due diligence procedures.
• Demonstrate a high level of written and oral communication, with a keen eye for attention to detail.
• Show a passion for fundraising and the need to make giving more effective for all level of donors by demonstrating increased impact across all fundraising initiatives.
• Be able to work independently and effectively, is comfortable with ambiguity and has a proven ability to manage competing priorities both operational and strategic in nature.
• Be experienced in using donor and potential donor relationship management systems, for example Raiser’s Edge or Toucan Tech.

About the Youth Endowment Fund

We’re here to prevent children and young people becoming involved in violence. We do this by finding out what works and building a movement to put this knowledge into practice.

Last year, 244 people in England and Wales tragically died after being assaulted with a knife. Of these, 32 were children. Every child captured in these numbers is an important member of our community and society has a duty to protect them. Even when violence doesn’t strike directly, we know that the fear of violence has a terrible effect on children’s lives. One in 12 women will be a victim of violence against women and girls each year in England and Wales. Our Children, Violence and Vulnerability (CVV) research with teenage children showed that 33% of teenagers have encountered online content that encourages violence against women and girls.

The Youth Endowment Fund exists to try and permanently change things. To succeed, we must build an exceptional body of knowledge about violence affecting young people and how we reduce it. This knowledge has to be both rigorous and highly relevant to those making decisions about how to support vulnerable young people. We need to find out what works and what doesn’t through evidence synthesis, data analysis and qualitative research into children’s lives. We need to convert this into highly accessible content on what works, how delivery organisations need to change their practice and how the systems they operate in need to be reformed. We then need to work with the right people that can make change happen, across systems, policies and practice, to have a real impact on reducing violence affecting children’s lives.

Violence against Young Women and Girls

At the heart of our work is getting clear on what works. We are looking for someone who can lead our research and change agenda on violence against young women and girls (VAWG). We have built the foundations of this work by:

• developing our understanding of experiences of violence through our Children, Violence and Vulnerability (CVV) research with teenage children;
• reviewing evidence on the effectiveness of interventions that aim to prevent relationship violence and violence affecting young women and girls, which is summarised in our Toolkit; and
• ensuring a strong focus on VAWG prevention in our Education Systems Guidance and Education Practice Guidance, based on the evidence we have for relationship violence prevention delivery in education settings.  

There is still a lot to do. We need to fund new research to fill gaps in our understanding of what works. We need to turn this evidence into actionable recommendations and sustainable change that will keep children safe from violence.

Key Responsibilities

The Violence against Young Women and Girls Lead will lead the VAWG research and change agenda for YEF. 

You will:

Be the YEF’s expert on VAWG

• Making sure we understand the key issues, stay on top of the latest research and are connected to the right people.

Lead YEF’s research agenda on VAWG

• Commissioning research that fills important gaps in knowledge and leads to important changes in policy and practice.

Develop evidence-based recommendations on the prevention of VAWG.

• Drawing on research and expert insight to produce recommendations for systems and practice guidance, across the seven essential sectors that we work with: children’s services, education, health, neighbourhoods, policing, youth services, and youth justice.
• Writing and publishing evidence briefings and recommendations for policy makers and system leaders about how to prevent VAWG.
• Working across YEF teams to ensure that YEF recommendations on VAWG are incorporated across our evidence and change products, including systems, sector and practice guidance, the Toolkit and implementation resources.

Develop and lead a change strategy.

• Developing great relationships with senior leaders, policymakers, commissioners, and key stakeholders connected to VAWG across England and Wales.
• Generating a strong understanding of key issues and needs across systems and sectors and building credibility and trust in YEF’s evidence products and recommendations.
• Creating practical tools and resources that help leaders put evidence into action.
• Developing, managing and tracking your change plan to get more senior leaders to be aware of and use our guidance, tools and resources, continuously looking for data-driven improvements.
• Delivering events and presentations to effectively connect people with the evidence.

Our Maintenance Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (MCST)  groups are where group members who are living with dementia and other cognitive impairments can participate in meaningful and stimulating activities, proven to help maintain memory and mental function. The groups provide a fun, supportive environment where people can build new relationships. MCST Activities include discussions, word games, quizzes, physical activities and creative and musical activities.

Our monthly Memory Cafés offers a relaxed, informal setting for people with dementia and their family, friends and carers to get together. The Memory Cafés provides a mixture of talks, information and advice, entertainment and activities

• Lead the delivery of our dementia groups including MCST sessions and our Dementia cafes, with support from volunteers.
• Work with the wider team to support your clients in accessing befriending support, social activities beyond the dementia groups and other related services.
• Build strong partnerships with local dementia services across health, social care, and the voluntary sector.
• Use and support the team of existing dementia linked volunteers and develop further recruitment and training as needed.

The Charity

The Youth Adventure Trust is a youth development charity working with vulnerable young people aged 11 to 16 years old from Somerset, Wiltshire and Swindon. Our outdoor activity based YAT Adventure Programme enables young people to challenge themselves, experience success, learn to go beyond their own expectations and grow in confidence. Through a series of residential camps and day activities they are able to build resilience, self esteem and develop social and life skills. The YAT Resilience Programme works to the same outcomes through a year long programme of monthly activities, home-based challenges and reflective practice. Our Mentoring Programme works with those young people in need of some additional individualised support at the end of our other programmes. The Trust’s Bursary Programme is open to all those young people who have completed an initial programme, in order to assist their next steps into further activities. Our aim is to make a lasting improvement to the lives of vulnerable young people. All our services are provided completely free of charge to the young people who are nominated by schools and other youth organisations to take part. 

The Role

We are looking for an experienced, dynamic and motivated Programme Manager to deliver, manage and support our YAT Adventure Programme.

Responsibilities will include:

• Acting as the key point of contact to organise, deliver and oversee the Adventure Programme to a group of young people, including managing and supporting residential adventure camps and activity days throughout the year.

• Recruiting young people to the programme, working in collaboration with our referral partners including schools and other organisations, ensuring all involved have an excellent understanding, relationship and experience with the Youth Adventure Trust.

• Working in partnership with the young people’s families to promote full attendance, effective participation and ensure they have all the information they require. 

• Carrying out direct work with young people to help support their needs and fulfil the Youth Adventure Trust’s aims.

• Providing ongoing feedback to young people, parents, carers and schools.

• Supporting the effective monitoring of the programme and measurement of young people’s developmental outcomes.

• Working with the Mentoring Managers to select and support young people moving on to the Mentoring Programme, and promote take up of the Bursary Programme. 

• Ensuring the highest standards of support, safety and safeguarding across the programme and all aspects of the Youth Adventure Trust’s work.

• Taking the lead with day-to-day administration and management of the programme. This will include maintaining a database, producing written communications and reports, information leaflets, website updates, budget monitoring, booking and negotiating with providers, and an array of detailed record keeping.

• Contributing to organisational planning and development, including supporting the development of further opportunities for young people. 

• Supporting the fundraising team through providing feedback, reports or event support.

You will also;

• Be involved in sector networking and awareness raising on behalf of the Trust.

• Act as an ambassador for the Youth Adventure Trust at all times.

The post is subject to a six months’ probationary period.

The Candidate

To be up to the challenge you’ll need an excellent understanding and a proven track record of relevant experience working with vulnerable and challenging young people. You’ll need demonstrable skills at building effective relationships with young people, parents/carers and professional organisations. You’ll need strong influencing and motivational skills; the capacity to get the best out of people and confidently deal with issues and challenges. You’ll be an excellent communicator, planner and problem solver, a strong team player and an exemplary role model. 

We need someone with:- 

• Commitment to safeguarding and dedication to promoting the welfare of young people.

• Relevant experience of managing young people, preferably in a residential environment as well as outside of this.

• Experience in working in partnership with other professional organisations and parents/carers.

• Strong leadership and team skills to motivate, support and work alongside a team of volunteers, activity instructors and logistics staff. 

• Self-motivation with the ability to work on their own initiative to plan and manage their workload.

• Strong IT skills including experience of MS Office, web based platforms and databases.

• Excellent administrative skills and a methodical and thorough approach.

• The ability to perform well and problem solve in high-stress and changing situations. Ability to be flexible and dynamic in approach.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

• A positive attitude, high energy and enthusiasm for the work of the Youth Adventure Trust; an understanding of the positive impact outdoor adventure can have on vulnerable young people, and a desire to help inspire young lives.

In addition:-

• The ability to work flexible hours, evenings and weekends as required is essential - the role includes attending several residential camps over the year, and some weekend days working on activities. If you are looking for a predictable 9-5 work environment, this won’t be the right fit.
