The role
Our recent growth and ambitious plans for the future mean that RLS needs to raise more sustainable funding than ever before. The new Fundraising Officer role will be central to this, playing a key role in the future of the organisation.
You’ll work closely with the Fundraising Lead to secure the financial support to allow the organisation to thrive and fight alongside more people who need our legal support.
Your main responsibilities will include:

Researching, identifying and pursuing funding opportunities: you’ll proactively seek out and apply for funding opportunities to maximise income from trusts, foundations, and other relevant sources.

Education should be the means to break the link between demographics and destiny. Yet every week 109 children in England – equivalent to three full classrooms – are asked to leave their schools and never come back, with disastrous personal and societal consequences. The Difference, a young education charity, was founded to change the story on this lost learning. It exists to build the status and expertise of teachers working with vulnerable children, particularly those who are excluded from mainstream schools.
By 2030, The Difference want rates of exclusion and absence to be falling nationally and for schools to be better equipped to support all children, including those who may be vulnerable.
The organisation was born out of a year of research into school exclusions with think-tank IPPR. This research identified a lack of inclusion expertise in schools and proposed a new leadership development programme to fill this gap. In 2018, The Difference founder Kiran hired the team who took this idea from concept to reality, beginning work with our first schools.
The Difference is now a 22-strong team delivering multiple school leadership programmes, alongside a growing research and policy arm. The team is supported by our Youth Advisory Board, made up of young people who have experienced exclusion and who provide their expertise and insights on how school inclusion work should be done. This work is needed more than ever. Effects of COVID-19, coupled with the spiralling cost of living, have substantially increased levels of vulnerability. Schools serving excluded pupils face under-funding. The Difference has had excellent early impact but there is work ahead to capture this, share learning with schools and policy-makers, and grow our capacity to lower exclusions across England.
Our first permanent Head of Fundraising will drive the growth and sustainability of our fundraising function. Having proved the impact on exclusions via our programmes, you will help us generate the income to scale this success across the country. We need an expert fundraiser to support this journey. Key Responsibilities
- Drive the delivery of a new fundraising strategy for The Difference, motivating and involving key members of the team, particularly the Development and Impact Manager.
- Build and manage a dynamic portfolio of around 20-30 major individual prospects and donors with capacity to give £50k+, working with key stakeholders to solicit and close asks.
- Grow overall fundraised income from £1.25m to £1.9m annually in next 3 years.
- Write and submit funding proposals to major donors, trusts and foundations, and corporate supporters.
- Support the creation of engaging content from our impact data and case studies, for The Difference’s website and social media that could lead to online fundraising, including feeding into writing press releases as required.

Responsibilities include:
Leadership, Strategy and Governance
- To be an active member of the Made in Hackney Senior Leadership Team, working together to galvanise the organisation behind our strategic plan.

About the opportunity
Fundraising is critical to delivering our mission and ensuring we can support as many children and young people facing disadvantage to open doors to their future. The Philanthropy Team as a whole has a combined target income for the current year (2023-24) of £1.83 million (growing to £2.35m as our target for next year), of which approximately £850k is from corporate donors and their foundations, £100k is from individuals, and the remaining from trusts and foundations. · Act as a system manager for fundraising platforms, databases and tools including Just Giving and the Giving Block, with support from Fundraising Coordinators.
· Oversee the development of the fundraising area of the website and fundraising pack to attract new funders and fundraisers to the charity, with support from the Fundraising Coordinators.
· Manage the Fundraising Coordinators, ensuring they are growing and developing, and that work load is shared fairly.

Person specification
This role requires an ambitious, passionate and determined individual with outstanding written and verbal communication skills. Alongside your team you will be responsible for writing and submitting grant applications and reports, so an excellent understanding of the English language and a keen eye for detail are crucial for success within this position. Working to deadlines and line-managing three Fundraising Coordinators, exceptional time-management, prioritisation and organisation skills are essential. With a focus on developing our individual giving strategies, we’re looking for an individual with excellent interpersonal skills.
Qualifications criteria:
· A*-C in maths and English at GCSE (or equivalent experience).

Duties and key responsibilities
Community fundraising
- Manage and develop regional fundraising by devising a regional community fundraising strategy for income generation.
- Design and develop Sarcoma UK's calendar of annual community fundraising campaigns and events communication, including Cuppa and Cake.
- Introduce fundraising opportunities to our existing and potential supporters through a multi-channelled marketing strategy to grow levels of engagement and participation.
- Identify opportunities and recruit new community fundraisers, fundraising groups, corporate and school partners.
- Work with the Fundraising team to produce regular feedback reports and analysis on specific community products and overall revenue.
- Lead on promotion of community fundraising through digital marketing, PR, speaking engagements and on the ground fundraising.
Management
- Provide line management and day-to-day support to the Regional Fundraising Officer North, building their fundraising knowledge.
- Develop, manage, and monitor budgets for your areas of responsibility.
Income Generation
- Implement agreed KPIs, objectives and budget for the Regional Fundraising Team to drive support and engagement.
- Identify fundraising products, key accounts, and projects that will support income growth both locally and nationally.
- Responsible for monitoring and managing all income streams across all community fundraising lines including Gift Aid and working closely with the Operations Team.
Processes, administration, and reporting
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date supporter records on Sarcoma UK’s database (Raiser’s Edge).
- Ensure all recording, and stewardship processes are up to date and working across the fundraising team, wider charity and in accordance with current laws and regulations.
- Ensure necessary Community Fundraising policies are up to date.
- Follow Sarcoma UK’s processes and procedures including risk assessments to ensure a consistent approach and maintain a high level of support expected by our donors and fundraisers.
- Ensure that all activities are compliant with legislation governing fundraising including GDPR, health and safety, Institute of Fundraising, and the Fundraising Regulator Code of Conduct.
Wider fundraising
- Support company and corporate partnerships that utilise community and trade fundraising.
- Support third party fundraising and challenge event portfolio.
- Work with the Events Manager to develop merchandise and trade income opportunities.
- Support with managing merchandise supplier relationships and internal and external stock levels.
General
- The role requires some travel to events and meetings throughout the UK. Some weekend or evening work will also be required and time off in lieu will be given. Travel expenses will be reimbursed (exc. Travel to the Sarcoma UK office).
- Stay up to date with the latest knowledge in fundraising and ensure Sarcoma UK’s processes and procedures follow best practice.

About You:
The Client Services team is looking for an account executive to build and manage relationships with clients and help them to deliver exceptional supporter-led fundraising. You will be an experienced account executive or account manager working with outsourced business processes for a minimum of 2 years.
You will need to have strong organisation and communication skills, experience of managing workflows, and a high level of emotional intelligence. Better Cotton is now seeking a Social Impact Fundraiser who will help to drive revenue in support of the ongoing success and growth of Better Cotton globally. Better Cotton has set ambitious 2030 targets to improve the lives and livelihoods of cotton farmers. This role will be responsible for ensuring these ambitions are adequately resourced. You will work closely with relevant thematic leads and country teams for proposal design, coordination and reporting of funded projects. Responsibilities
Development of Social Impact Programmes
Participate in the development of thematic programmes that fulfil farmers’ needs while aligning with Better Cotton’s 2030 strategic goals:
- In close collaboration with Global Impact team and country teams support a programmatic co-creation process, that is marketable and fundable.
- Manage a coalition building phase of social impact donors and allies. This includes outreach to relevant stakeholders identified, pitching to prospective donors, creating fundraising materials.
- The Coordinator will likely manage individual donor relations, while also coordinating Social Impact Coalition Committees.
Fundraising efforts
- Manage relationships with donors/investors to increase success rate of applications and ensure continuous funding.
- Conduct research into funding opportunities for sustainable agriculture and livelihoods.
- Organize outreach efforts with new donors/investors strategically, sharing relevant material and/or pitching to prospective donors identified.
- Share interesting grant opportunities internally and assess feasibility, identify the project idea/concept to be developed and liaise with relevant teams internally.
- Lead the proposal development process. Work closely with other teams (Finance Team, MEL Team, country teams etc.) to support specific proposal development coordination tasks, such as developing proposal workplans, building budgets or logframes, writing non-technical sections, consolidating and editing written inputs, compiling annexes, writing narratives, collating information and other tasks as needed.

- Represent Better Cotton and the programmes, when needed to present to donors and coordinate social impact funding panels.
