Reporting to the Director of Finance, you will lead the team responsible for organisational financial planning and analysis, partnering with budget holders across the organisation and delivering vital and timely information and analysis to support key strategic decisions and the delivery of the strategic plan.

The ideal candidate is someone who has successfully managed a similar Finance Business Partnering /FP&A team with a track record in effective partnering with income-generating teams and in building a high-performing team that provides insight and constructive challenge.

Purpose of Role

The Head of Finance & Operations is a pivotal senior leadership role responsible for ensuring the financial sustainability, operational effectiveness and strong governance of the charity.

Reporting directly to the CEO and working closely with the Board of Trustees, Treasurer and Senior Management Team, the postholder will lead the charity's finance function whilst overseeing governance, risk, compliance, systems, facilities and business operations.

This is a hands-on role within a lean and ambitious organisation, requiring both strategic leadership and operational delivery. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting organisational decision-making, strengthening infrastructure and ensuring the charity is well-positioned for future growth.

Key Responsibilities
 

Financial Leadership

• Lead financial planning, budgeting and forecasting processes
• Develop and manage cashflow, ensuring long-term financial sustainability
• Produce timely and accurate management accounts and financial reports for the CEO, Board and Committees
• Oversee the preparation of statutory accounts and manage the external audit process
• Ensure strong financial controls, compliance and fraud prevention measures
• Support the CEO, Treasurer and SMT with financial insight, analysis and scenario modelling
• Line-manage the Senior Finance Officer to ensure effective financial reporting and controls.
• Develop longer-term financial planning, cash flow and budgeting processes to help shape the future financial direction of the charity.
• Ensure adherence to financial policies, procedures, and fraud prevention controls.

Strategic Leadership & Organisational Planning

• Act as a key member of the Senior Management Team, contributing to organisational strategy and planning.
• Translate financial and operational data into clear, actionable insight.
• Support performance monitoring and organisational decision-making across the charity.
• Contribute to the development and delivery of sustainable growth plans.
• Drive a culture of continuous improvement and organisational effectiveness.

Governance, Risk & Compliance

• Lead the coordination of Board and Committee cycles, ensuring meetings are effectively planned and delivered.
• Oversee the preparation and collation of Board and Committee papers, working with SMT colleagues to ensure timely submission of reports.
• Maintain the governance calendar and ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory deadlines.
• Attend Board and Committee meetings as required, providing financial and operational insight.

Systems, Data & Information Governance

• Provide strategic oversight of the charity's systems, technology and data infrastructure.
• Lead systems improvement projects to enhance efficiency, reporting and user experience.
• Oversee the charity's CRM, finance systems and reporting platforms.
• Manage relationships with external IT providers and consultants.
• Act as the charity's Data Protection Accountable Person.

Operations, Facilities & Procurement

• Oversee office operations and facilities management.
• Manage supplier relationships and key service contracts.
• Lead procurement processes and ensure value for money across operational expenditure.
• Ensure operational policies, procedures and controls support effective service delivery.
• Support organisational resilience and business continuity planning.

Location:  Hybrid working - Part London office-based (E14) and part home working. The post holder will work a minimum of one day a week in the office. 

Salary: £56,875 per annum

Who we are looking for 

Breakthrough T1D is the UK’s leading type 1 diabetes charity, dedicated to funding research, advocating for change, and supporting the T1D community. We are looking for an experienced and dynamic Head of Finance to help us ensure the finance function is fit for purpose so that we can deliver our ambitious 10-year strategy.

Reporting to the Director of Finance & IT, this is a hands-on leadership role with responsibility for the day–to–day management of the finance function, responsible for monthly financial reporting including quarterly reforecasts and co ordinating the annual budget as well as partnering with senior stakeholders across the organisation.You will also lead on the annual accounts and external audit. 

Managing a team of 3 (2.2 FTE), you will ensure the organisation continues to deliver robust financial control, insightful charity reporting and effective support to operational teams.  

Experience required 

You’ll be/have: 

• CCAB qualified financial professional (or finalist) 

• Experience working for a charity in a senior finance role with fundraised income of £1m or more 

• Strong business partnering skills and experience working closely with senior operational leaders. 

• Strong financial reporting, controls and systems confidence 

• Ability to work both strategically and hands–on 

• Familiar with the charity SORP 

• Strong people management and leadership skills with the ability to develop and motivate teams 

• Excellent accounting, analytical, and communication skills allied with a pragmatic and solution focused approach.

The Role

This role heads the Project Finance team and ensures it continues to support Blue Marine effectively as the organisation grows in scale and complexity. It also oversees the full financial journey of Blue Marine’s project partners, from due diligence and legal agreements through to strong financial oversight and accurate reporting. A key part of the role is building the financial and operational capacity of partners, helping partners scale their conservation impact through improved financial management and operational effectiveness.  

Reporting to the Director of Finance, Operations and Governance, the successful candidate will: 

• Oversee and develop the Project Finance team, setting clear priorities, high standards and effective ways of working.
• Drive the strategic direction of the Project Finance function as Blue Marine’s portfolio grows in scale and complexity.
• Maintain high-level oversight of project budgets, delivery partners, donor requirements, financial risks and reporting obligations across the portfolio.
• Oversee the end-to-end financial journey of project partners, from due diligence and legal agreements through to ensuring timely and accurate reporting is received.
• Ensure high-quality, timely project reporting, budget monitoring, audit evidence and donor compliance, with fit-for-purpose processes followed consistently.
• Provide insight, challenge and analysis to support strategic decisions and funding proposals.
• Lead Blue Marine’s work to build the operational capacity of international project partners, including through some international travel.
• Champion practical improvements to systems and ways of working, building on an existing culture of continuous improvement.
• Provide hands-on support during peak reporting periods while maintaining senior oversight.
• Represent Finance with credibility and integrity across Blue Marine and with external partners and funders.
• Deputise for the Director of Finance, Operations and Governance where appropriate.
• Contribute to wider organisational priorities as a member of the senior management team.

Skills and experience required

Essential 

• Significant senior experience in project finance, programme finance or commercial finance, with responsibility for complex budgets, reporting and risk.
• Strong track record of overseeing large and complex portfolios, including financial reporting, audit evidence, and contractual or donor compliance requirements and risk management.
• Experience of improving finance systems, reporting tools or organisational processes during a period of growth or change.
• Strong understanding of financial controls, policies and processes, with the ability to apply sound judgement in a practical and proportionate way.
• Experience of working with external partners to improve financial processes, reporting and operational effectiveness.
• Experience of leading and developing high-performing teams, with the ability to set clear priorities and improve ways of working.
• Confident communicator with the ability to build credibility and constructive relationships with colleagues, funders and external partners.
• Highly organised, with the ability to manage competing deadlines and maintain accuracy and attention to detail in a fast-moving environment.

Desired 

• Qualified accountant, or equivalent senior-level financial experience.
• Experience of working with Microsoft-based systems, including Power Platform tools such as Power BI.
• Experience of bringing structure, clarity and strong financial discipline to complex or evolving organisations.
• Experience of working with international partners across different legal, operational or cultural contexts.
