The Role

We are seeking an experienced and proactive Head of Finance & Operations to take ownership of all internal operations that ensure the organisation’s effectiveness, accountability, compliance, and resilience. Hours and place of work

• This is a full-time role to be fulfilled over a 35-hour week, ideally within the working hours of Mon-Fri, 9:30am–5:30pm, with flexibility as required.
• This is a hybrid role with one day a week in our shared office space in London (Better Space, 127 Farringdon Road, London EC1R 3DA), the travel costs of which must be covered by the individual. We are open to discussing this arrangement further to accommodate individual needs and preferences.

Terms, pay and benefits

• This is a permanent contract.
• Salary for this role will be ca. £55,000 p/a depending on experience.
• The post holder is entitled to 25 days of annual leave, in addition to UK statutory holidays.
• The office is closed for one week during the winter festive period (25-31 December), providing an additional three days of annual leave in addition to the above allocation.

The Role

This is a pivotal leadership role, reporting to the Associate Director of Finance and managing the Financial Partnering, Planning & Analysis Team. As part of the Finance & Assurance Leadership Team, you'll be instrumental in leading cultural change, embedding collective leadership, and shaping the future of financial partnering across the organisation. You'll define and deliver a consistent, high-quality approach to financial planning and analysis - balancing strong relationships with analytical rigour. This role is about codifying what FP&A means in practice: not just being "all things to all people," but establishing clear standards, tools, and expectations across directorates.

Head of Finance
Salary: £70,000 - £80,000 per year, depending on experience

Joining the Executive Team and playing a central role in shaping the charity’s future, you will:

• Lead, manage and continually improve the finance function
• Provide accurate, timely financial reports to the CEO, Executive Team and Trustees
• Be Executive Lead for the Finance, Audit & Risk Committee
• Oversee financial accounts, forecasting and reporting for large-scale programmes and estate developments
• Ensure compliance with statutory requirements, including annual audits and reporting to the Charity Commission and Companies House
• Monitor cash flow, reserves and performance against the annual business plan
• Contribute to cross-organisation strategy and support colleagues on shared initiatives
• Lead and develop a small Finance team, including the Senior Finance Manager, Debt Recovery Consultant, Development Partnerships Lead and two Finance Officers
• Oversee IT and systems to ensure they are efficient, modern and aligned with organisational needs

This is a role where you’ll work closely with colleagues across all departments, ensuring the charity has the financial insight and stability to deliver life-changing projects.
 
About you
You’ll be a qualified accountant with senior finance leadership experience, ideally gained within a charity. You’ll bring:

• Confidence in leading finance operations and processes with strong attention to detail
• Experience of statutory reporting, VAT (including partial exemption) and financial compliance in a charity setting
• The ability to explain complex financial information clearly to colleagues and trustees
• Experience of introducing improved reporting tools and supporting others to use them

You will have the overall responsibility for delivering timely data analysis insight of the ASF financial performance against prior years and budget/reforecasts, providing recommendations to facilitate improvements. This is a hands on role and some of your key responsibilities will be:

· Carrying out monthly trends / variance analysis covering the P&L, balance sheets and funds flow.

·       Lead the budget and 3-year planning process working closely with the senior management team.

· Provide a quarterly forecast, reviewing salesforce data with the senior management and finance teams.

· Proactively meet with and support the COO, Head Office and Centre managers to discuss actions following regular salesforce data analysis to maximise sales opportunities whilst reviewing staffing levels and costs.

· Prepare meaningful reports for the senior management meetings and for board/Trustees’ meetings for the CEO. 

· Work with the CEO and management team on scenario planning and cash flow forecasting.

You should also be able to demonstrate an ability to manage time effectively, with proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience of different accounting software preferably with Sun Systems and Proactis.
