There are no set hours when volunteering for us and you can turn down anything that you are offered. Obviously, we will treat you with dignity and respect.

We do not anticipate that you will incur expenses in this role. We expect our volunteers to already have an internet connection and be willing to use that as part of their volunteer role with Green Allotments CIO.

(At present we are unable to accept applications from under 18s, although we hope to be able to do so in the future as our charity grows)

Relevant Person’s Representative (RPR) Support Volunteer

People in care homes should have a voice to communicate their needs wishes and wants. Some people need support with this, but don’t have friends and family available to assist them.  This means they’re entitled to have support from an RPR and volunteer, who are there to make sure they get the care they deserve.  Your role as an RPR Support Volunteer is to collaborate with the VoiceAbility RPR to make sure a person’s views are listened to when decisions are made about their care. 

As a RPR support volunteer, you might:

• As an RPR Support Volunteer you might: 
• Visit people in their care home, to make sure they’re getting the right care and support 
• Talk with them about their feelings, thoughts and wishes 
• Raise concerns 
• Keep detailed notes and records 
• Make a real difference to someone’s life 

Support Session Volunteer

You’ll be supporting people over the age of 18 with disabilities, this may include those with poor mental health, learning difficulties, autism and other disabilities.  Your role will include supporting clients to understand and undertake a task on a one-to-one basis.  The task will vary from client to client as will the needs of the individual. 

As a support session volunteer, you might: 

• help people have their say when it matters most
• Helping individuals navigate challenges and ensuring their needs are met
• help people to make complaints and use local services

All volunteering will take place Monday to Friday between 09:00 and 17:00.  You will need to be over 18 years old and be living in the UK. Please note that there is no opportunity to volunteer at weekends or in the evening.

Training Opportunities

Volunteers will be able to access Solace Women’s Aid’s induction and internal volunteer training programme. Full support will be given to help volunteers understand and carry out any aspect of the role as appropriate. You will also receive an 8 week training with North London Rape Crisis.

Compassionate Companions are trained volunteers who provide empathetic, non-clinical support to individuals and families affected by life-limiting conditions, including severe frailty and dementia. Their role is to listen, empower, and guide individuals in exploring and documenting their preferences for future care, helping them live with peace of mind and dignity.

This role requires an enhanced DBS check. Full training is provided.

• Conduct home and community visits to patients, providing compassionate and person centred support.

• Engage with patients to understand their values, priorities, and what matters most to them.

• Accurately document patients’ care preferences using the My Care Choices booklet.

• Initiate sensitive conversations regarding the ReSPECT form and resuscitation preferences, supporting patients ahead of clinical discussions with their healthcare provider.

• Provide guidance and emotional support in funeral planning, respecting individual wishes and cultural considerations.

• Facilitate legacy activities such as letter writing, memory box creation, and other meaningful expressions.

• Direct patients and families to appropriate services through collaboration with social prescribers and Essex Frontline.

• Record and relay relevant observations and updates to the team manager in a timely and professional manner using a digital form provided.

• Uphold strict confidentiality and maintain professional boundaries in all interactions.

Jumble Sales Organiser Volunteer

Would you like to raise funds, have fun and join a super team of volunteers who together make our Jumble Sales in Thatcham a great success?  As Jumble Sales Organiser you would be helping to make everything run smoothly for the team.

Time Expectations:  1 Saturday every other month (plus preparations)

This could be a shared role and tasks may include:

· Booking the hall for future Jumbles

· Contacting the Jumble team before events to check availability

· Set up stalls, running a stall and packing away at the end

· Collecting any items/resources needed from the centre the day before

What We're Building

A platform that spots early warning signs of burnout and helps managers intervene before people break. Think predictive tech + psychology + practical support.

What We Actually Need You To Do

We need someone who can:

• Talk to HR people and managers about their burnout challenges (15-20 interviews over 2-3 weeks)
• Find organizations that might want to test this with their teams
• Help us understand what would actually work vs. what sounds good on paper

That's it. No corporate nonsense. Just real conversations with real people about a real problem.

Weeks 1-2: Find people to interview

• Use your network to find 15-20 HR folks, managers, and employees
• Schedule 30-60 min chats (we'll give you the questions)

• Have real conversations about burnout
• Document what matters (not what sounds nice)

Time commitment: 2-3 hours a day. Work when you want. No meetings about meetings.

About Abortion Talk’s Talkline

Abortion Talk is a small charity with a mission to destigmatise abortion, one conversation at a time. 

Our pro-choice, pro-voice Talkline launched in 2021 and is open four evenings a week between 7pm and 10pm. Run entirely by volunteers, it offers a safe, confidential space for people to share their experiences, ask questions, or find information about abortion care and related support services.

The Talkline is for anyone affected by abortion - those who’ve had one, are considering one, have supported someone else or work in abortion care.

By joining our volunteer team, you’ll be a part of a growing network of people working to end abortion stigma through compassion and conversation. You’ll build your confidence in active listening and learn how to support people with respect and empathy. You’ll also gain insight into how abortion care works in the UK, how to access services and how to navigate challenging or emotional conversations with sensitivity. 

Most importantly you’ll be helping to make sure no one feels alone when talking about their abortion. 

In spring of 2025 we introduced our webchat alongside our telephone line, for people who would like support but are unable or don’t want to communicate by phone. Volunteers will have the option to provide support via the phone, webchat or both. 

What being a Talkline Volunteer involves

• Offering support and information in a non-judgemental, non-directive and destigmatising way to people who have abortion experiences, over the phone or via webchat.

• Developing an awareness of abortion care pathways that a caller may have experienced or may be seeking. This includes developing knowledge of how abortion services are delivered and accessed.

• Using our Talkline manual and website to signpost to services that can support people with their individual needs. 

• Recording anonymised, general information about calls on our call log database.

• Attending supervision meetings and Talkline Volunteer training/meetings (online virtual meetings) when needed. 

• Keeping up to date with Abortion Talk news and our work. We have a volunteer WhatsApp group where we share news and updates and support each other.

We’re looking for people who:

• Share our commitment to pro-choice, inclusive approaches to abortion

• Can listen with compassion, and without judgement

• Confident using an internet connected computer, including email, google drive, telephone call and/or webchat apps and scheduling apps such as Doodle. 

• Willingness to follow our training, guidance, manuals, and policies.

• The ability to keep personal and confidential data safe.

• Can commit to one or two shifts a month.

• Can offer a quiet, confidential space to take calls or chats.

Previous experience on a helpline or in abortion-related work is welcome but not essential as we’ll give you all the training you need. 

We particularly encourage applications from volunteers across the UK and from men, as a small but growing number of callers are men seeking support.

Training & Time Commitment 

We’re passionate about training our volunteers in essential skills that enable them to handle challenging calls with ease. Due to the nature of this opportunity, we’re looking for people who can commit to all 3 days of the mandatory Talkline training. 

Training will be three half-day sessions (9.30am – 2pm) on consecutive Saturdays and will take place over Zoom. You will need to be available on each of the following dates:

• 10th January 2026

• 17th January 2026

• 24th January 2026

If you don’t already have Safeguarding training - don’t worry, we will provide this too. 

Once trained you will have access to your Welcome Pack, Talkline Manual and our diverse community of volunteers 

We also invite all volunteers to attend at least one “Talkshop” each year as part of their commitment, which is a friendly online space to debrief, share experiences, and learn together.

Learning Volunteer

Are you creative? A great communicator? Would you like to use those skills to equip others our fight for home?

Information about the role

You’ll be helping develop new, engaging and inclusive learning content for Shelter and Shelter Scotland Volunteers. You’ll also be identifying any improvements that can be made to existing learnings and support in completing agreed upon updates.

Location: remote/home-based

Suggested contribution: 1 day per week (which can be flexible around your commitments).

Availability: volunteering will take place at a time that suits you, ideally within Monday-Friday, 9am – 5pm but there is flexibility.

Main activities may include:

This role fights the housing emergency by equipping fellow Shelter and Shelter volunteers with the skills and knowledge to achieve our strategic goals.

Your skills and experience

• Experience of designing or creating learning content, it can be gained this experience, whether it was through work or other volunteering.
• Basic IT skills.
• Able to collaborate well with a diverse group of people.
• A passion for fighting the housing the emergency.

Supporting you

• You will be provided with an induction into your role, access to relevant learning and a copy of our volunteer handbook.
• You will be provided with full training on using our volunteering database ‘Better Impact.’
• You will be provided with the contacts and information relevant to each piece of learning you are creating/editing.
• The role, including learning and communications, are flexible, so can be tailored so they best suit your needs and preferences.
• You will be able to claim reasonable volunteering expenses in line with Shelter’s volunteer policy. Where financial circumstances would be a barrier to volunteering, we may be able to offer these funds in advance.
• You will be able to access our volunteer support package, including our colleague assistance programme and Shelter’s network of mental health first aiders.
