About the role:

At Single Homeless Project's (SHP) Elms, we’re looking for a passionate and experienced Support Assistant ready to make a lasting difference in people's lives. Elms is a vibrant service based in Leyton (Waltham Forest) that brings together supported housing, a daytime activity programme, and a small floating support service. The supported housing element provides longer-term placements for adults with a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia, some of whom may also be managing physical health needs. Here, you’ll play a vital role in supporting residents to maintain their daily routines, manage their treatment, and grow in confidence as they move toward greater independence. We are looking for people to join our Bristol Complex Needs service in Totterdown and Speedwell as Project Workers. The service provides accommodation and housing related support to people experiencing homelessness; dedicated to providing a safe, high quality and inclusive service to people while they are living in the hostel, and a positive move-on into independent housing. 

In the role of Project Worker, you will:

• Oversee a caseload of clients and provide ongoing 1-1 support in an approachable, caring and person-centred way.
• Provide practical and personal support to clients with complex needs around areas such as housing and health. 
• Have a good understanding of a person centred approach and how to provide the right support to clients to meet individual needs, identifying personal aims and ambitions and making plans to achieve them.  
• Work with the team, external statutory agencies and voluntary organisations to ensure everyone has access to available support.  
• Continue to develop your skills further around working with clients in a holistic way, and to gain a deeper understanding of housing and benefits law, and other specialist areas through training, supervision and line management support. 

These roles have a variety of weekly shift based rotas (Monday Friday and Monday-Sunday). Further information will be provided at interview. In some of these role’s staff can claim an additional 20% pay premium for hours worked between 8pm and 8am Monday to Friday, and all hours worked on Saturday and Sunday.

This role will suit a support worker to working throughout the night. You will report to the team leader and engage/support customers during anti-social hours needing support.
This is a great opportunity for a Waking Night Support Worker, wanting to gain exceptional experience within the mental health field, based on the solid working relationship with (SCMHT) We have since implemented training directly from SCMHT to support staff with understanding Mental Health diagnosis and Managing Crisis with our customers in-house.

Shelter from the Storm run an emergency night shelter that looks after 24 men and 12 women all year round. The Waking Night Project Worker is a key role in supporting our guests throughout the night. 

About the shelter:

The night shelter opens everyday at 6pm and closes each morning at 8am. We provide dorm style accommodation - two rooms which each have 12 mens beds and one room containing 12 womens beds. On site we provide: a home cooked dinner every evening, a counselling service, move-on support, ESOL classes, laundry, showers, clothing, computers, activities, a breakfast each morning and sandwiches to take away. We are a low-needs, low-risk homeless shelter so do not work with people suffering from acute mental health problems or people with active drug or alcohol dependencies.

Job Description:

To be on shift from 9pm until 7am alongside a volunteer to ensure the safe running of Shelter from the Storm. The volunteer position is a ‘sleep in’ role meaning that long parts of the shift will be lone-working. Therefore a satisfactory DBS check is essential.

The WNPW will provide first contact, safeguarding and support to Shelter clients and an essential link to staff working during the day.

The post-holder will be responsible for controlling access to the building, dealing with emergencies, carrying out Health and Safety checks and communicating any concerns or events to the rest of the on-site team and/or on-call staff.

The WNPW will be familiar with SFTS safeguarding policies and guest agreements, demonstrating a non-judgemental attitude and an understanding of the issues faced by a vulnerable client group who may be experiencing complex issues. They will communicate any concerns with staff and make interventions to support a safe environment for clients, volunteers and staff.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Providing waking night cover and being responsible for the safe running operation of the shelter.

• To maintain the safety and security of guests and volunteers alike, as well as the building.

• Be the first point of contact for guests during the night.

• To maintain a calm and relaxed environment during the shift.

The people we work with often face intersecting challenges including mental health, trauma, identity-based discrimination, and housing insecurity. Support Sessions

· To meet service users regularly to provide structured support, in relation to LGBTQ+ and Housing specific issues, such as gender identity pathways, mental health services, health issues, safeguarding, liaising with the professional network.

· To work with LGBTQ+ people accessing supported accommodation to develop and review individual support plans and risk assessments.

· To liaise with other service providers ensuring service users receive the necessary support to sustain their accommodation, acquire relevant independent living skills, maintain or improve positive physical and mental health and access into meaningful occupation of their time.

Financial Support

· To assist service users in maximising and managing their income including universal credit, ESA, PIP and Housing Benefit.

Semi-independent Living Support

· To work with service users to enable them to develop the life and social skills necessary to sustain their accommodation and prepare them for independent living.

· To assess individual service user’s suitability for independent accommodation.

· To act quickly to manage incidents and to advise, support and assist service users unable to maintain supported accommodation into more appropriate housing options.

Resettlement

· To support service users in the completion of application forms necessary to support move-on housing, including the private rented sector.

· To ensure that all service users are provided with information about local services whilst in supported accommodation and during their move on.

· To ensure all service users are fully aware of their rights and responsibilities in their home.

· To work with housing providers, both public and private, to negotiate move on options.

Groupwork, Consultation and Participation

· To work as part of a team in developing user participation.

· To identify and develop appropriate and flexible processes for consulting with our service users, via social media platforms, newsletters, events and workshops.

· To devise innovative and creative ways of involving LGBTQ+ people in the running of the schemes with an independent approach.

· Supporting our residents to participate in group and peer support and to access online support mechanisms.

· Facilitating and promoting an LGBTQ+ group work programme.

Other Duties

Support Sessions

· To give holistic support to LGBTQ+ people accessing our supported accommodation service and to provide proactive support to these service users who are sometimes hard to engage.

· To meet service users regularly to provide structured support, in relation to LGBTQ+ and Housing specific issues, such as gender identity pathways, mental health services, health issues, safeguarding, liaising with the professional network.

· To work with LGBTQ+ people accessing supported accommodation to develop and review individual support plans and risk assessments.

· To liaise with other service providers ensuring service users receive the necessary support to sustain their accommodation, acquire relevant independent living skills, maintain or improve positive physical and mental health and access into meaningful occupation of their time.

Financial Support

· To assist service users in maximising and managing their income including universal credit, ESA, PIP and Housing Benefit.

Semi-independent Living Support

· To work with service users to enable them to develop the life and social skills necessary to sustain their accommodation and prepare them for independent living.

· To act quickly to manage incidents and to advise, support and assist service users unable to maintain supported accommodation into more appropriate housing options.

Resettlement

· To support service users in the completion of application forms necessary to support move-on housing, including the private rented sector.
