This is an exciting new post that will support the officers in the devolved nations as well as project support for a new project in Scotland. The post will involve administrative support for national meetings, handle enquiries, promotion of events and project specific work and customer service / stakeholder relationship management. The position will also involve recruiting volunteers for the project and working with them on a daily basis. The role will be varied but have brilliant support from across the organisation.
The Church of Scotland project this post will support is a three-year project. Beat will be working with Guilds across Scotland, delivering presentations on eating disorders and the services Beat provides, as well as supporting fundraising efforts of individual Guilds. As part of the role, this post will be expected to coordinate and liaise with Guilds to arrange the presentations.

We are looking for a Senior Conservation Scientist to input into RSPB’s Flyways and Migrants programme. The Flyways and Migrants programme aims to undertake and facilitate research into the causes of population decline of priority migratory birds of the East Atlantic Flyway (non-passerines and passerines) and contribute to the development and testing of conservation solutions to prevent and reverse their declines across the annual cycle. This programme is likely to require conservation actions to address the main threats in key habitats, sites and landscapes, including nature-based solutions that support sustainable livelihoods and ecosystem services.
You will be RSPB's lead scientist on the population ecology, habitat use and distribution of RSPB priority migratory landbirds along the East Atlantic flyway. You will develop and maintain scientific and technical expertise in relevant specialist areas, to identify emerging issues and associated research questions to underpin RSPB’s conservation activity. You will manage and develop staff through recruitment and management of multiple staff across grades up to conservation scientist (and volunteers and students as appropriate), to ensure the RSPB has the knowledge and skills required to deliver excellence in conservation science.
You will develop, design, cost and manage the delivery of multiple projects, to provide the evidence base to underpin RSPB’s conservation activity. This includes development and implementation of research projects on populations, habitats, and management options and solutions for migrant birds along the flyway. Initially you will undertake legacy work on pied flycatcher home range and resource use in two Liberian non-breeding sites with contrasting land use, utilising existing radio-tracking and tree species data collected over two seasons.
You will work in close collaboration with RSPB Flyway and Migrants programme colleagues, other RSPB scientists working on migrants, the BirdLife partnership and other conservation organisations.
You will ideally be based near either our David Attenborough Building, Cambridge or The Lodge, Sandy, however our Scotland HQ in Edinburgh could also be considered.
Essential skills, knowledge & experience:
- A PhD or similar level of experience in a relevant subject, broad knowledge of conservation issues and practice, and conservation science, gained through experience of taking responsibility for the management of a range of scientific projects and initiative and scientific horizon scanning to conceptualise and propose innovative projects to answer novel and important conservation questions using science.
- Broad knowledge of current scientific issues that is relevant to conservation and how to assess their applicability to current or future projects.
- Specialist and up-to-date knowledge of how to apply complex statistical modelling procedures to enable innovative, robust analysis and interpretation to any type and size of data set. In particular an ability to programme in R or SAS, and Python.
- Ability to be self motivated and work efficiently and to prioritise own working schedule. This necessitates the ability to plan and organise their own work and manage the work of others they are line-managing.
- Collecting, collating, manipulating, and statistical interrogation of large and complex data sets that can pass international peer-reviewed standards of scrutiny and audit and ability to influence others through production of high impact written material; for example demonstrable track record of scientific publication in internationally recognised journals, reports to funders, books and book chapters, but also written material for any media channel.
Desirable skills, knowledge & experience:
- Track record of research and publication associated with the field of migrant birds, ideally Afro Palearctic landbirds.
- Experience of use and analysis of satellite remote sensing data including class cation for land cover assessment.
- Use of GIS for land cover and land cover change modelling, ideally including carbon storage data.
- Ability to translate conservation science into conservation practice, through prescriptive writing and verbal coaching in the field, to influence others, including government and across the BirdLife partnership.
- Knowledge of how to provide practical and scientific expertise and guidance in a particular scientific area and be RSPB- and externally- recognised expert or specialist in at least one particular scientific area.
- Ability to work in extreme conditions in the field, either in the UK or abroad.

We are seeking a Principal Conservation Scientist to develop and take forward a broad portfolio of applied ecological research in support of RSPB’s international conservation objectives and collaborate closely with BirdLife International, and BirdLife partners. Depending on skills and experience, you will develop, manage, or contribute to work in the following areas: conservation of globally threatened species, site based conservation, global commodities consumed in the UK (e.g. cocoa), land use and land cover change (especially along the east Atlantic Flyway), international conventions and conservation legislation, and nature based solutions.
You will be a nationally or internationally recognised scientist with a track record of publishing in the peer-reviewed scientific literature. You will have experience of designing and delivering scientific studies, and of winning external research funding. You will demonstrate an aptitude to build and maintain effective working relationships both within the RSPB and with external partners including universities and research institutes, but also key conservation organisations and project specific stakeholder groups. You will develop a scientific programme to underpin the key conservation challenges and opportunities facing the RSPB internationally, relating to species conservation, site conservation and landscape and regional scale land cover change and conservation planning.
This is an exciting opportunity for a conservation scientist to contribute to RSPB’s international conservation science programme at a crucial time in the biodiversity and climate crises.

The Role
The Executive Assistant will provide Executive and Administration support to the Chief Executive.
Main duties and responsibilities include:
- Interpreting and communicating policies and processes
- Planning and delivering projects
- Day to day communication with and support of the Trustees and other relevant committees
- Coordinating and recording meetings of the Trustees and Senior Leadership Team
- Drafting and proofing reports to the Trustees
- Keeping all company documentation for Trustees up to date
- Assisting in fulfilling charity compliance and audit requirements
- Managing the Chief Executive’s diary, appointments and documentation
- Coordinating travel and accommodation as required
- Act as an authority and champion of good governance
About You
As Executive Assistant, you will be efficient and well organised with demonstrable experience in a similar role with the ability to work with diplomacy and integrity.
You will bring with you:
- Demonstrable experience of working with Boards
- Solid working experience of office administration processes, including implementation and maintenance of filing systems
- Customer services and relationship management skills
- Excellent Microsoft Office skills
- Project management and communications skills
- Report writing and proof reading skills
- The ability to work flexibly and be able to adapt according to business requirements
- The ability to work under pressure to agreed deadlines and adapt to change

About this job
In our Insight and Impact Manager role, you’ll be leading the collection, analysis, and presentation of evidence to measure our impact across our services. This is an important role that helps provide greater insight into the service needs of the MS Community.
You’ll be working closely with colleagues across the organisation to support the further development, promotion and innovation of our services to people affected by MS.
We’re looking for candidates with:
- A proven track record of data collection and analysis, using a range of techniques
- Experience in evaluating and organising information
- Experience of developing databases and data capture systems
- Excellent knowledge of the use and application of statistical techniques (eg. averaging, correlations, statistical significance)
- Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, graphs, and formulae.

Principal Policy Officer (Woodlands and Forestry)

This is an outstanding opportunity to ensure the UK’s woodlands and forests help tackle the nature and climate crises. You will lead the development and high-level advocacy of RSPB policy on forestry and woodland issues and influence important debates and decisions across the UK.
We are looking for a highly experienced policy advocate who understands and can influence the policies that drive both commercial forestry and the decisions by landowners to plant trees and manage woodlands of all kinds. You will provide thought leadership, already be well respected in this field and your advocacy, communication and campaigning skills will be second to none.
What’s the role about?
The UK’s woodlands and forests have a major role to play in helping to halt declines in nature and combat climate change. Significant woodland and forest expansion forms part of all land use scenarios for how the UK will achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
The RSPB supports the management and expansion of the UK’s woodlands and forests and seeks to influence the public policy, legislation and funding decisions, at UK and devolved level, that affect this. The Principal Policy Officer will have a UK remit and work with policy staff across the four UK countries, leading the development of our overarching policy positions, helping to develop and coordinate our advocacy strategies and ensure their effective implementation. The role will be responsible for undertaking high level advocacy on forestry and woodland policy and providing information, advice and support to other staff internally on forestry and woodland matters.
The postholder will need strong leadership skills and the ability to work with a wide range of policy staff across the UK and with colleagues in our Conservation Science, Communications and Campaigns and Operations teams to ensure we have impact.
Key aspects of the role include:
- Developing credible policy positions based on sound science and evidence
- Developing advocacy strategies that will achieve results
- Undertaking high level advocacy and communicating persuasively
- Coalition campaigning and communications
- Building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders at senior level
- Helping to plan and coordinate work across different teams and disciplines to ensure we influence policy decisions in each of the four UK countries.
What we need from you?
- You will be an experienced policy advocate, recognised as a thought leader in your field, and with substantive knowledge of forestry and woodland policy and practice in the UK or wider.
- You will be able to lead and coordinate work with others to develop policy positions, produce advocacy strategies and implement them and have influence externally at a senior level.
- You will be able to analyse complex issues in a fast-paced environment
- You will have well-developed negotiating and influencing skills and be able to engage with a wide range of individuals and organisations
- You will understand how public institution decision-making occurs and have good political instincts
- You will have written and verbal communication skills of a very high standard; professional and persuasive
- You will have an excellent understanding of the role of public facing communications/campaigns in supporting policy advocacy.
- You will be confident and capable of being a public face for RSPB policy and advocacy to the media and through the use of social media.
- You will be an expert in woodland and forestry policy in the UK or wider, with relevant academic or professional qualifications
- You will bring with you an extensive network of contacts and relationships in government, agencies, business and NGOs, relevant to the forestry and woodland sectors.
